Description : The radial prophets of the English civil wars were fascinating figures, combining a devout belief in the power of divine inspiration with a passionate desire for social change and a distinctly eccentric rhetorical style. Tracing the prophets who rant, rage, and wreak havoc through the works of Butler, Dryden, Mandeville, Pope, and other less familiar writers of the period, 'Transforming the Word' pursues the fate of radical prophecy between 1660 and 1742.

Description : The construction of high-speed railways includes a wide variety of aspects, ranging from safety to new types of equipment and construction solutions. All these require state-of-art technologies, and in recent years design concepts for high-speed railways have improved. The focus in this volume is on the interaction between rail track and bridges. Track-bridge interaction sets a limit to the vibration and deformability of structures, so that accelerations, stresses and track deformations are controlled, circulation safety is satisfied, and design solutions for bridges are determined. Track-Bridge Interaction on High-Speed Railways presents the latest research on the interaction between rail track and bridges, and will be invaluable to civil engineers involved in the design, construction and maintenance of high-speed railways and bridges, and to researchers and graduate and undergraduate engineering students with an interest in this field.

Description : During the last decades completely new technologies for high speed railway vehicles have been developed. The primary goals have been to increase traction, axle load, and travelling speed, and to guarantee the safety of the passengers. However, new developments have revealed new limitations: settlement and destruction of the ballast and the subgrade lead to deterioration of the track; irregular wear of the wheels causes an increase in overall load and deterioration in passenger comfort; and damage of the running surfaces of the rail and the wheel is becoming more frequent. These problems have been investigated in the Priority Programme SPP 1015 supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), with the goal of better understanding of the dynamic interaction of vehicle and track, and the long-term behavior of the components of the system. The book contains the scientific results of the programme as presented at the concluding colloquium held at University of Stuttgart, Germany, 2002.
