Reading Between the Lines Book Excerpt:

This book presents a collection of new and stimulating approaches to reading in a foreign language. The contributors to the volume all place reading at the heart of learning a foreign language and entering a foreign culture, and they consider issues and methods of language education from such diverse perspectives as cognitive theory, applied linguistics, technology as hermeneutic, history, literary theory, and cross-cultural analysis. The contributors—teachers of French, German, Greek, Japanese, and Spanish—call for language teachers and theorists to refocus on the importance of reading skills. Emphasizing the process of reading as analyzing and understanding another culture, they document various practical methods, including the use of computer technology for enhancing language learning and fostering cross-cultural understanding.

But now that she's thirty and newly graduated, it's pay-back-time - at least as far as the bank is concerned. With Fleabag, her mad cat, and Maggie, her eternally forty-something friend, providing her only sane company - and her last relationship further in the past than her last pay cheque - she can't help wondering where she's going wrong. But then Rob walks into the class she teaches - and his alarming brother Leo, a barrister with a penchant for cross-examining, strides into Maggie's party and puts Julia in the stand. Reading Between the Lines Book Excerpt:

Have you ever wondered what happened between the lines in those wonderful Old Testament Bible stories? What were the characters really like? What did they think? What were their expectations, their fears, their dreams? The history of what happened is available in the scriptures, but one can only imagine the missing pieces. Reading Between the Lines fills in those gaps fictionally. The characters are presented as ordinary people, experiencing the same ups and downs that most people do. Seven outstanding characters from the Bible are herein explored in their entirety: Leah, Aaron, Naomi, Jonathan, Abigail, King Josiah, and Esther. Reading Between the Lines reveals what might have occurred and what could have happened to all of them. As a result, these beloved Old Testament characters are viewed in a totally new light, and they will be long remembered.

Reading between the lines Leo Strauss and the history of early modern philosophy Book Excerpt:

Since its publication in 1952, Leo Strauss's Persecution and the Art of Writing has stirred considerable controversy, particularly among historians concerned with early modern philosophy. On the one hand, several scholars share his view that it would be inadequate to generally take at face value the explicit message of texts which were composed in an era in which severe sanctions were imposed on those who entertained deviating views. ‘Reading between the lines’ therefore seems to be the appropriate hermeneutical approach. On the other hand, the risks of such an interpretative maxim are more than obvious, as it might come up to an unlimited license to ascribe heterodox doctrines to early modern philosophers whose manifest teachings were in harmony with the orthodox positions of their time. The conributions to this volume both address these methodological issues and discuss paradigmatic cases of authors who might indeed be candidates for a Straussian ‘reading between the lines’: Hobbes, Spinoza, and Bayle.
