Immediately following the Civil War, the United States Ordnance Department reported it had purchased 128,575 Remington revolvers during the conflict. During the Franco-Prussian War in 1870-71, Samuel Remington acted as an agent to acquire arms for the French War Ministry. Fifteen to twenty thousand Remington New Model Army revolvers were purchased from the Ordnance Department and sent to France. Donald Ware devoted twenty-five years of research in the Ordnance Department archives, the Remington factory's records, and Army and Navy records to assemble this detailed examination of the development and evolution of Remington revolvers from the beginning of the Civil War through the end of the Indian wars. In addition to information about the revolvers themselves, Ware shares tidbits that he uncovered along the way. For example, part of the equipment issued the Civil War soldier was a bullet mold for his revolver. During the War, the Ordnance Department issued combustible ammunition for revolvers, making the mold a superfluous appendage. To avoid carrying the extra weight, the mold was usually tossed away. In 1863 the Ordnance Department notified Remington there was no need to furnish molds with the revolvers and therefore saved the government eighteen cents on each revolver. "The Remington Society of America hereby endorses, and takes pleasure in recommending,Remington Army and Navy Revolvers, 1861-1888by Don Ware. . . . this book is well researched, documented, factual, and quite informative. It reflects an enormous amount of research in primary documents and is a highly definitive work on these firearms. It will be a valuable asset for students and collectors of the Remington large frame revolvers field of antique arms and should become a standard reference."--Richard J. Shepler, President, Remington Society of America

The North Baltimore neighborhood of Remington has a proud and industrious history. Stone from its quarries built the foundations of homes in the city, and the Jones Falls turned its mills to feed hungry immigrants who found a home in the neighborhood. By the end of World War II, the population of the area began to decline, yet through floods, depressions and even a mosquito plague, generations of residents remained in the neighborhood to help build a tightknit community. Drawing on interviews with locals and her own meticulous research, historian and neighborhood resident Kathleen C. Ambrose chronicles the history of Remington. Join Ambrose as she journeys from Remington's earliest days through the twentieth century--and even as she takes a glimpse at the future of this vibrant community.

Frederic Remington was born on October 4, 1861, in Canton, New York. Related to the early western painter George Catlin, Frederic attended the art school at Yale University, but dropped out when his father died, soon went west to Kansas City. He married Eva Caten in 1884 and after trying the frontier life, moved back to Brooklyn. He began to submit illustrations, sketches, and other works with western themes for publication. Much of his early work appeared in Collier's and Harper's. A prolific artist, his technical ability meant he could reproduce the physical beauty of the west, and his insight into the historic nature of American settlers made him possibly America's greatest western artist. Unlike Charlie Russell who lived the life of a wrangler, Remington spent little time out west, but he captured the scenes in a way that fueled the eastern fantasy of the "Wild West" in a way that no one else did. He was just in time to show the west before the wilder elements were subdued and this frisson of deadly excitement gave Remington's works great appeal. Remington, of course, was not just a painter. Trying sculpture in the mid-1890s, he quickly mastered a medium that gave a new dimension to his subjects, charging them with such detail, movement, and energy that they seemed ready to leap to life. Over the course of his career, Frederic Remington produced more than 3,000 drawings and paintings, and 22 bronze sculptures-representative selection of which are collected together in this book.

It was not until 1947, thirty-eight years after Frederic Remington's death, that the first fairly comprehensive book about his life and work was published. That Harold McCracken completed "Frederic Remington: Artist of the Old West" was due in large part to the efforts of Emma Caten of Ogdensburg, New York, the sister of Remington's wife. Frederic and Eva Remington had no children, and Remington himself had been an only child, so after his death in 1909 it was Eva and, later, Emma who, with the help of Remington's friend John Howard, took responsibility for the collection of unsold paintings, sketches, and western paraphernalia in the house in Ridgefield, Connecticut, where the Remingtons were living when he died. When Eva died in 1918, she bequeathed the collection, as well as a copy of each of Remington's bronzes, to the Ogdensburg Public Library. When the library suffered a fire, the collection was transferred to the Parish Mansion in Ogdensburg, overlooking the St. Lawrence River, and it was remodeled and renamed the Remington Art Memorial. Still housed in the same building (including an addition) and now called the Frederic Remington Art Museum, the collection contains a comprehensive trove of Remington works and personal effects, including many letters. -- Introduction.
