Alices Derives in Devonshire Book Excerpt:

World of Fact: The novel draws on the author's longtime exploration of psychogeography, Situationism, drift and derive, and fleshes out his practice of mythogeography through the curious mind of a young girl exploring the gaps between her parents' respective worlds and her own; between the city that she sees and the one that she finds when she walks out into it; between the layers of possible experience. It's a quite remarkable journey for anyone interested in those subjects, in what it's like to upgrade (whether as an adolescent or as an adult), or in the tears in the fabric of things that we mostly manage to ignore. World of Dream: "e;Can a city fall to bits one day and put itself back together the next? I think so, but I am crazy. So why should you believe me? Dad says it's OK to be mad. Bad is the problem. And the city is bad. I saw its badness. For one day its glass was everywhere like broken teeth after a fight between lions and sharks. Big buildings leaning on each other like drunk dinosaurs. The new shopping centre was a cave full of smoke. And everyone was frightened of each other. But I wasn't frightened. I could see that between the pieces of glass were shining gaps. And in the biggest building were passageways and tunnels and I could see that that was the good city. The city of holes and caves. Between the bad was the good, but only if you knew that before you looked. A little while later - I'm not sure how long because that was when I was ill again - the bigger cities burned for real; life had a really bad dream. By then, though, I knew that the cities were always ruins, no matter what they looked like. And that you had to know how to see fire to find warmth."e;

Well-known to those who devour ghost stories, the North of England has a rich tapestry of tales relating to the paranormal and many are well known; Lady Gerrard of Darlington, the Screaming Skull of Burton Agnes Hall and so on. But some are not so well known and have languished in obscurity for decades. Now rescued from oblivion, these stories are a compilation of tales from long neglected volumes dating back to the 1970s and 1980s describing some of the region's rarer and unknown cases. Many will startle. Many will alarm. All with thrill...

The Modern Vikings Stories of Life and Sport in the Norseland Book Excerpt:

All night long the storm danced wildly about the cottage, rattling the windows, shaking the walls, and making fierce assaults upon the door, as if it meant to burst in. Sometimes it bellowed hoarsely down the chimney, and whirled the ashes on the hearth, like a gray snowdrift, through the room. The fire had been put out, of course; but the dancing ashes kept up a fitful patter, like that of a pelting rainstorm, against the walls; they even penetrated into the sleeping alcoves and powdered the heads of their occupants. For in Iceland it is only well-to-do people who can afford to have separate sleeping-rooms; ordinary folk sleep in little closed alcoves, along the walls of the sitting-room; masters and servants, parents and children, guests and wayfarers, all retiring at night into square little holes in the walls, where they undress behind sliding trapdoors which may be opened again, when the lights have been put out, and the supply of air threatens to become exhausted. It was in a little closet of this sort that Thoralf and Jens were lying, listening to the roar of the storm. Thoralf dozed off occasionally, and tried gently to extricate himself from his frightened brother’s embrace; but Jens lay with wide-open eyes, staring into the dark, and now and then sliding the trapdoor aside and peeping out, until a blinding shower of ashes would again compel him to slip his head under the sheepskin coverlet. When at last he summoned courage to peep out, he could not help shuddering. It was terribly cheerless and desolate. And all the time his father’s words kept ringing ironically in his ears: “Iceland is the most beautiful land the sun doth shine upon.” For the first time in his life he began to question whether his father might not possibly be mistaken, or, perhaps, blinded by his love for his country. But the boy immediately repented of this doubt, and, as if to convince himself in spite of everything, kept repeating the patriotic motto to himself until he fell asleep.

Short Stories Book Excerpt:

The book contains stories about human values in our lives that we have cherished over centuries, and which continue to enrich our lives even today. In the advanced technological age, they retain their importance and balance our personalities. They make society stable and give meaning to our lives. They have particular significance for the growing generation that shapes the world of tomorrow. The stories are fictional, but they relate to life as we live and face every day. They are about love and hatred, compassion and jealousy, self-interest and concern for others – the different facets of life that people experience in the world of emotions. They also talk of the human dilemma between idealism and practical life, of courage in adversity and realisation of dreams and aspirations and the need to reaffirm our faith in the goodness of man and divine justice. They concern especially the young and adolescent mind that is impressionable in the critical age and forms our ethical side of life that helps us avoid the pitfalls of emotional crisis in later life.
