Description : Little is also known on how school leaders can shape the school culture (Haiyan et al., 2017). Besides, maintaining a positive school culture is a challenging task (Bhengu & Mthembu, 2014). Therefore, the current study aimed to explore the leadership skills needed by system leaders in creating and maintaining an effective school culture and climate. A qualitative grounded theory approach was adopted for the study. Two Superintendents and twelve principals were the participants. Interview protocol to collect the data relative to the research phenomenon under investigation was created and used by the researcher. A thematic technique was adopted to facilitate the analysis of the obtained data. The data was coded utilizing NVIVO software and further analyzed to identify emergent themes. The first finding that emerged was that the school's culture and climate could be organized through frequent check-ins, regular meetings, open communication, mentoring, and collaboration. Nevertheless, the lack of buy-in, time, bureaucracy, and fixed mind-sets were identified as the main obstacles to creating and organizing an effective school culture. It is important to note these obstacles can be addressed through research, conversations, listening, the inclusion of resisting parties, and team effort. The next finding revealed the main leadership traits for creating and organizing school culture and climate. These include flexibility, visibility, patience, and honesty. Re-visitation, data review, meetings, and open discussions were reported as forums in guiding stakeholders back to the target culture and climate. Anonymous surveys, teamwork, observations, revisiting, and active listening were found to be essential in maintaining school culture and climate. An additional finding indicated that monitoring systems, frequent meetings, professional development, re-visitations, and feedback are common cultural and climate monitoring protocols. In conclusion, the research findings revealed that effective school culture can be created and organized through frequent check-ins, checklists, regular meetings, mentoring, and collaboration. It is also concluded that teachers' lack of belief in the necessity of creating a school culture, bureaucracy, and fixed mind-sets are significant obstacles to the creation of an effective school culture. The research is valuable in that it offers school leaders with essential insights about how to create and maintain school culture. Additionally, the leaders can learn about the leadership traits necessary to maintain school culture and strategies to use to address obstacles when creating school culture.

Description : This comparative case study approach was used to conduct a study of two schools in good standing in two different districts to investigate how superintendents support principals in implementing, embedding and sustaining the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS) with the goal of student improvement. The study showed that system leaders, through a balanced leadership approach, played the role of thought partner, leadership developer, guide, and evaluator to principals. They utilized a data-based and differentiated approach to support school leaders and organizational development through use of various generative processes. The researcher collected relevant data based on each research question through the use of interview protocols, observations, and a review of documents. Data were analyzed and triangulated to identify the practices that were utilized and to identify how system leaders supported principals in implementing, embedding, and sustaining the CCLS. The conclusions of the study were the following: 1) District leaders in this study played the following roles when supporting school leaders: vi Thought Partner, Leadership Developer, Guide and Evaluator. The district leaders utilized a balanced approach to provide support, build capacity, and develop leadership skills in principals as they implemented, embedded, and sustained the CCLS with the purpose of improving student performance. 2) Principals utilized professional supports, such as professional learning conferences, intervisitations, feedback and one-on-one support to implement, embed, and sustain the CCLS with the purpose of improving teacher practice and student performance. 3) District leaders utilized support systems, such as data based decision making, intervisitations, and differentiated professional learning, which fostered leadership growth and development of principals’ practices. 4) The participants affirmed that the CCLS implementation process was precipitous. They valued the CCLS as a resource to facilitate high quality instruction and assessment that lead to increased student learning. Finally, the adjustments in the implementation process does not impede their work with the standards.

Description : Alma Harris The ?eld of school leadership is currently preoccupied with the idea of distributed leadership. Few ideas, it seems, have provoked as much attention, debate and c- troversy. Whatever your position on distributed leadership, and you cannot fail to have one, it is irrefutable that distributed leadership has become the leadership idea of the moment. Yet, it is an idea that can be traced back as far as the mid 20s and possibly earlier. So why the interest? Part of the answer can be found in a move away from theorizing and empirical enquiry focused on the single leader. This shift has undoubtedly been fuelled by structural changes, within schools and across school systems that have resulted in - ternative models or forms of leadership practice. Evidence highlights how those - cupying formal leadership positions are increasingly recognizing the limitations of existing structural arrangements to secure organizational growth and transformation (Fullan et al. , 2007; Harris et al. , 2008; Chapman et al. , 2008). As a consequence, many heads and principals are actively restructuring, realigning and redesigning leadership practice in their school (Harris, 2008). While the terminology to describe such changes varies, the core principle is one of extending or sharing leadership practice. While scholars have long argued for the need to move beyond those at the top of organizations in order to examine leadership (Barnard, 1968; Katz and Kahn, 1966) until relatively recently, much of the school leadership literature has tended tofocusupontheheadortheprincipal.
