Star Trek Book Excerpt:

In a world shrunk by modern transport and communication, Star Trek has maintained the values of western maritime exploration through the discovery of ‘strange new worlds’ in space. Throughout its fifty-year history, the ‘starry sea’ has provided a familiar backdrop to an ongoing interrogation of what it means to be human. This book charts the developing Star Trek story from the 1960s through to the present day. Although the core values and progressive politics of the series’ earliest episodes have remained at the heart of Star Trek throughout half a century, in other ways the story it tells has shifted with the times. While The Original Series and The Next Generation showed a faith in science and rationalism, and in a benign liberal leadership, with Deep Space Nine and Voyager that ‘modern’ order began to decline, as religion, mental illness and fragmented identities took hold. Now fully revised and updated to include the prequel series Enterprise and the current reboot film series, this new second edition of Star Trek: The Human Frontier – published to coincide with Star Trek’s golden jubilee celebrations – addresses these issues in a range of cultural contexts, and draws together an unusual combination of expertise. Written to appeal to both the true Trekker and those who don’t know Star Trek from Star Wars, the book explores and explains the ideas and ideals behind a remarkable cultural phenomenon.

The Hollywood Book of Love Book Excerpt:

An authoritative and humorous look at Hollywood's ever-changing take on love, romance, and marriage over the decades From steamy silent classics like A Fool There Was to romantic musicals like Grease to epic schmaltz-fests like Titanic, Hollywood historian and bestselling author James Robert Parish provides a very personal (but quite factual) run-down on how the Hollywood dream factory has portrayed love, marriage, and divorce on the big screen. The Hollywood Book of Love reveals in an entertaining fashion how the attitudes and standards the audience absorbs from the movies influence their expectations in real-life relationships. Writing with his trademark dry wit and rich knowledge of American movie history, Parish provides perceptive and amusing takes on 200 feature films and offers tantalizing sidebar factoids on everybody from Liz, Bette, and Bogie, to Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, and Nicole Kidman.

Passion for Truth Book Excerpt:

In "Passion for Truth", author and scholar Fr. Juan R. Vélez painstakingly uncovers the life and work of Blessed John Henry Newman. In the story of his early years, his family upbringing and university education, and through his vast correspondence with family, friends, and colleagues, Vélez acquaints us with Newman, the loyal friend, profound thinker, prolific writer, and holy priest. A true Catholic gentleman, who can be admired and loved by all who love the Truth.Newman was a talented but timid young man, who often doubted his own competence, but was to become one of the most influential teachers and writers of the 19th Century.Starting life as a devout and promising Anglican scholar, he finished the race a faithful and unwavering Catholic priest and Cardinal, to the disappointment of some of his closest friends and the great joy of many others. His prominent position as an Anglican clergyman and Oxford don made his long anticipated conversion the subject of great interest to many of his contemporaries and once he crossed over to Rome, many Anglicans followed his lead. His clarity of thought as a scholar was such as is hardly seen in contemporary society and was even growing rare in his own day.A relentless pursuit of wisdom did not allow him to simply store away his knowledge but urged him to conform his life to what was true wherever and whenever he discovered it. This passion for Truth did not always gain him friends, but it ultimately gained him what he valued above all else: a home in the True Church of Christ.

Windforce Book Excerpt:

WINDFORCE: a voyage into the blue. By M.A.Hill Book two of The Travellers Trilogy 'You can't beat against the force of the wind forever - sometimes you must just run before the gale even though it may end in shipwreck.' Storms of the Indian Ocean course up the coast of Western Australia in winter - saltwater sailor and Master Mariner Gretta Finneson is on a desperate solo voyage in Vagabond, a vintage racing yacht. She must complete the passage to save a dolphin and whale watch charter in the pristine wildlife sanctuary at Shark Bay from development and destruction by powerful Chance Syndicates. Time and the odds are against her. The freedom of those who travel these trackless horizons of windswept oceans and the lonely outback is endangered, and it seems that failure is inevitable. Fellow Traveller, landscape artist Aidan Randell, cannot help her for he is tied to the fragile musician Zelina who is beset by floods and bushfires in her southern forest sanctuary. Adventurer, poet, and artist M.A. Hill is a unique voice in Australian literature, and she tells a powerful story that mirrors the relentless battle for the survival of our world's wild places. As the plot unravels in this second novel of The Travellers Trilogy, the diverse characters populate a landscape that is at once original yet familiar. The first novel, 'Trackless; a journey that follows no trails,' was praised as 'a compelling read' (Cockburn Gazette) 'a work of sheer literary genius' and 'one of the best books I've ever read.' The final tale, 'Setback: a passage through the dark,' will be released soon. If you read Tim Winton, you will enjoy the work of M.A.Hill. Her prose is lyrical, and her storytelling overlays many dimensions of reality.

The Bullion Trail Book Excerpt:

The Cupola (Mafia High Commission) sanctions the execution of a disgraced Capo. He becomes aware of his fate and fears his days are numbered. In order to secure a financial future for himself he plans a bullion heist. It would be suicide to stay, so he decides to flee Italy and settle in Argentina. By various means the serial numbers of the bank vault are obtained. More than thirty million dollars worth of Bullion are stolen from the Italian Reserve bank in Milan. The Bullion is hidden away in readiness for its transfer out of the country, to be sold abroad. Without the Capo’s famiglia the operation to steal, hide and transport the bullion would have been impossible. Coercion, persuasion, family love and honour are employed, even though the association would endanger their lives. In London a ruthless businessman, becomes aware of a promising crude oil strike in an African country ruled by a corrupt president. He has his own agenda. He plans to overthrow the president in order to liberate the people, with his reward being to gain control of the country’s oil. Funds are needed to equip and hire mercenaries to affect a coup. He hears of the bullion heist, the proceeds of which would suit his cause admirably. He is determined to pursue the possibilities. With the help of his employees and effective intelligence, discovers the whereabouts of the heist’s instigators and the bullion. By subterfuge he plants a mole to monitor the movement of the gold, with the hope of relieving the perpetrator of his ill-gotten gains. A group of tourists, with their own human stories, and need for adventure, unwittingly get involved. They become entwined in the activities of Mafia, criminals and law enforcers. Relying heavily on each other for comfort and support, they manage tasks none would have imagined could ever have been asked of them. This trip provides far more adventure than could ever have possibly been planned. Africa becomes the epicentre for much activity. Mercenaries have to be hired, plans formulated, and finalised for a coup. South Africa being relatively cosmopolitan and civilised finds itself as a recruiting office and staging post for the activities to come. Central Africa brings challenges from culture, superstition, terrain but also the magic, which is ever present on this continent. The bullion is taken on numerous journeys. Touching the lives of many people; willing, unwilling, corrupt, innocent, with and without knowledge. The movements and people involved span three continents, from as far away as Southern England to Cape Town in South Africa. Using various modes of transport, including an ill fated sea voyage, a trek across savannah, the bullion is transported out of Italy and into Africa. From differing backgrounds, with their dreams, aspirations, agendas, countries, superstitions and cultures, the main character’s involved with the bullion, cross path’s, in central Africa. They are all effected by the heist, romance blossoms, loyalties change. The outcome being against all expectations. The bullion causes a trail of greed, power lust, corruption, death, bravery and benevolence.

The Naked Backpacker Book Excerpt:

This story follows my journey over five decades, across five continents, in a quest to find a warm special place I can call home. Brought up in a safe middle class area, my principals are challenged when I learn about different cultures, the plights of endangered animals and extreme poverty around the world. At times along the way, I find myself in amusing, scary and fascinating situations as I battle with motion sickness, acrophobia, giardia and migraines. Pitting myself against the elements, I climb mountains, sail on the Pacific Ocean and trek through jungles as my endurance is tested endeavouring to fulfil my dream. I start trusting my intuition as both good and bad experiences shape me into a different person. Amongst many adventures, I survive jumping from a plane, getting robbed in Tanzania, being propositioned in Croatia, having nowhere to sleep and running out of currency. Crashing my motorbike, almost drowning in the Zambezi and being charged by a hippo, lion and elephant teach me to appreciate life. An excellent rapport with my pet Indian python, stroking cheetahs in Africa, hanging with mountain gorillas in Zaire and holding pandas in China, clinch my love of animals. This leads me to befriend lemurs in Madagascar, meet orangutans in Borneo, walk with tigers in Thailand, snorkel with sea turtles in Hawaii and swim with dolphins in New Zealand. I'm privileged to have experienced so much and grateful to have travelled so far.

This book captures in its pages the story of a first-generation entrepreneur’s struggles and victories. Vijay Kapoor, founder of the brand Derby Men’s wear, started his journey in the year 1994. Derby Men’s wear is a men’s apparel brand, popular in south India, with over sixty-eight stores, headquartered out of Chennai, India. Vijay Kapoor started his journey with two tailoring machines, a two-hundred square feet size store, a capital of two lakh rupees, a heart filled with dreams and a mind full of ideas. The purpose of sharing his story is to inspire people to reaffirm their faith in themselves. Nobody has it easy for himself or herself in life. No one gets everything right in his or her personal or professional lives from the start. Obstacles are not meant to block our progress. Challenges are meant to help us grow. Adversity is the time for innovation. A comeback after a setback is possible only if we don’t give up on ourselves. In these pages, a love story is narrated simultaneously. It is an unconventional story of how two individuals find love against all odds through a journey of self-discovery.
