Sediment Management at the River Basin Scale Book Excerpt:

Sediments are a natural part of aquatic systems and they are essential for the hydrological, geomorphological and ecological functioning of those systems. For society they are important and represent an important resource. However, due to the ever increasing use of river catchments, sediments need to be managed in a balanced and sustainable way. Sediment Management at the River Basin Scale reviews some of the key requirements and challenges facing scientists, river basin managers, and policy makers for sustainable sediment management at the river basin scale, and puts forward important recommendations. This volume also available as part of a 4-volume set, ISBN 0444519599. Discount price for set purchase. * First book to consider management at the basin scale * State-of-the-art review chapters * New conceptual frameworks and approaches to management

Soil and Sediment Remediation Book Excerpt:

Soil and Sediment Remediation discusses in detail a whole set of remediative technologies currently available to minimise their impact. Technologies for the treatment of soils and sediments in situ (landfarming, bioscreens, bioventing, nutrient injection, phytoremediation) and ex situ (landfarming, bio-heap treatment, soil suspension reactor) will be discussed. The microbiological, process technological and socio-economical aspects of these technologies will be addressed. Special attention will be given to novel biotechnological processes that utilise sulfur cycle conversions, e.g. sulfur and heavy metal removal from soils. Also the potential of phytoremediation will be highlighted. In addition, treatment schemes for the clean-up of polluted megasites, e.g. harbours and Manufactured Gaswork Plants (MGP), will be elaborated. The aim of Soil and Sediment Remediation is to introduce the reader in: the biogeochemical characteristics of soil and sediments- new techniques to study soil/sediment processes (molecular probes, microelectrodes, NMR) clean up technologies for soils polluted with organic (PAH, NAPL, solvents) or inorganic (heavy metals) pollutants- preventative and remediative strategies and technologies available in environmental engineering novel process applications and bioreactor designs for bioremediation the impact of soil pollution on society and its economic importance.

Option for Treatment and Disposal of Contaminated Sediments from New York New Jersey Harbor Book Excerpt:

The U.S. Army Engineer District, New York, dredges several million cubic yards of sediment annually to maintain Federal navigation channels in New York and New Jersey Harbor. Most of this dredged material has characteristics that allow its disposal into open water or ocean sites. However, contaminant concentrations in some of the materials have led to this and other investigations of alternate management techniques for dredged material that is unacceptable for open-water disposal. These alternatives include ocean disposal with capping, coastal borrow pit disposal with capping, land-based or in-water confined disposal, and treatment of sediment to reduce the contaminant concentrations to levels acceptable for unrestricted disposal or beneficial uses. This report assesses available treatment and disposal alternatives for dioxin-contaminated dredged material from New York/New Jersey Harbor. Included in the assessment of treatment alternatives are a survey of available options, results from bench-scale tests of selected treatment technologies, development of the overall process train for promising treatment alternatives, an assessment of the feasibility of implementing the alternative, preliminary cost estimates, and a comparison of alternatives. Disposal alternatives are discussed on a similar basis and are compared with treatment alternatives. Bioremediation, Dechlorination, Dredging, Sediment, Capping, Dioxins, Extraction, Solidification, Confined disposal, Disposal, Incineration, Thermal, Contaminated, Dredged material, Remediation, Treatment.
