Lucy Lowell is referred to Alex by Los Angeles police detective Milo Sturgis. A juror at the agonizing trial of a serial killer, Lucy survived the trauma only to be tormented by a recurring nightmare: a young child in the forest at night, watching a strange and furtive act. “Exciting . . . loaded with tension and packed with titillating insights.”—The New York Times Book Review Now Lucy’s dream is starting to disrupt her waking life, and Alex is concerned. The power of the dream, its grip on Lucy’s emotions, suggests to him that it may be more than a nightmare. It may be the repressed childhood memory of something very real. Something like murder.

Description : "Get tough, get down in the gutter, win at all costs... I teach what is called 'Gutter Fighting.' There's no fair play, no rules except one: kill or be killed." - W.E. Fairbairn Learn self-defense from one of the most badass hand-to-hand combat experts the world has ever seen! W. E. Fairbairn is an absolute legend in the world of martial arts. He is credited with inventing the SWAT team, riot police, bullet-proof vest, and the Fairbairn-Sykes fighting knife used to this day by Special Forces, Marines, and Armies around the world. After enlisting in the British Royal Marines at age 16, Fairbairn spent the years between 1903 and 1907 stationed in Japan and Korea eagerly studying every form of martial art he came across. Fairbairn then accepted a position as a patrolman with the Shanghai Municipal Police department, which, in the early days of the 20th Century, was struggling against seemingly endless swarms of organized criminals and violent gangsters. Tasked with training the underfunded department, Fairbairn wove together his military training, mastery of Eastern martial arts, and everything he learned from personal experience street-fighting deadly criminals into a new style of no-holds-barred, 'gutter-fighting' called Defendu. In the 35 years he spent walking the streets of Shanghai, Fairbairn allegedly survived over 600 physical engagements, the violence of which left his body covered head-to-toe with the scars of knife and bullet wounds. Upon leaving Shanghai Fairbairn accepted a job to train elite agents for the British Secret Service in anticipation of WWII. Written in 1931, after 20 years on the gritty, lawless streets of Shanghai, Scientific Self-Defense is a no-nonsense guide to protecting yourself by any means necessary against any conceivable assailant. With hundreds of diagrams and photos illustrating Defendu's time-honored defensive maneuvers and brutal retaliatory attacks, Scientific Self-Defense will teach you everything you need to know about kicking ass and taking names!

Description : The war of June 1967 between Israel and Arab states was widely perceived as being forced on Israel to prevent the annihilation of its people by Arab armies hovering on its borders. Documents now declassified by key governments question this view. The UK, USSR, France and the USA all knew that the Arab states were not in attack mode and tried to dissuade Israel from attacking. In later years, this war was held up as a precedent allowing an attack on a state that is expected to attack. It has even been used to justify a pre-emptive assault on a state expected to attack well in the future. Given the lack of evidence that it was waged by Israel in anticipation of an attack by Arab states, the 1967 war can no longer serve as such a precedent. This book seeks to provide a corrective on the June 1967 war.

Description : One of only a few books on the subject written by a native-born Filipino author, Arnis Self-Defense offers a twofold, interrelated focus. It first looks at the unique Filipino culture — how it was greatly influenced by Spanish colonization, the oppression it suffered under foreign rule, and how the desire for freedom led to the development of the martial art of arnis. The book then presents the distinct technical aspects of this indigenous fighting art. Centering on the Kombatan method forged by Grandmaster Ernesto Presas Sr., it describes numerous maneuvers utilizing stick, blade, and empty-hand components and details their myriad practical applications. A wealth of photographs and drawings clearly illustrate the principles and techniques described. The author depicts arnis in its true light, as a simple, pragmatic method of self-defense, while debunking the more fanciful theories surrounding it as it surges in popularity.

Description : Realistic Self-Defense For Parents, Children, and Adolescents is a comprehensive self-defense manual that is designed to teach children and adolescents how to avoid altercations and physically defend themselves. This book will teach children how to listen and trust their intuition, become aware of their surrounds, use their words to avoid an altercation, stay safe on the internet, and control their fear. The physical self-defense techniques in this manual include how to correctly use your hands, elbows, knees, and legs to stop an attacker. Children will learn to defend against possible situations that they may encounter. This manual contains defenses against punches, chokes, bear hugs, hair pulling, shirt grabs, and wrist grabs. Additional scenarios explain how to respond and defend yourself if forced to the ground, if attacked from behind, or if facing multiple adversaries. This manual addresses parental concerns about child-specific safety threats such as how to react to an abductor approaching a child from a car, how to maintain safety while out with friends, and how parents can protect their child during a physical altercation. Over 500 computer generated images are used to assist in learning the concepts and techniques. Self-defense concepts and techniques are effective against an adult or adolescent adversary. No prior martial arts or self-defense knowledge is required to learn, understand, and perform the techniques in this manual. This manual should be read by both parents and their children to enhance the learning experience.

Description : Self-Defense for Gentlemen and Ladiesais the treatise of Colonel Thomas Hoyer Monstery, a master swordsman who participated in more than fifty duels, fought under twelve flags, battled gangsters, and was constantly involved in the great conflicts and upheavals of his time. Monstery's treatise-originally published in the 1870s as a series of newspaper articles and collected here for the first time-is his magnum opus, a highly detailed dissertation on the art and science of defense. Filled with profound insight as well as practical advice based upon personal combative experience, it proposes a holistic approach to self-defense, including both unarmed and armed methods for use against a wide variety of fighting styles and weapons, as well as touching upon issues of health, exercise, diet and longevity. Self-Defense for Gentlemen and Ladiesapresents a unique look into the Victorian fighting world, describing styles of the era such as British "purring" (shin-kicking), Welsh jump-kicking, and Danish head-fighting. Additionally, the book's section on the quarterstaff is the only American source on this weapon prior to the 20th century. Aside from its historical value, however, Monstery's teachings on unarmed self-defense, cane fighting, and responding to unpredictable situations are still useful today, especially for those martial artists focused on "real world" self-defense. Fifty rare drawings and photographs from the period provide a fascinating glimpse into Monstery's world and training, while an extensive glossary of terms and an introductory biography of Colonel Monstery--including fascinating details of his many duels as well as his groundbreaking devotion to teaching fencing and self-defense skills to women--update Monstery's text to make it accessible to a broad and modern audience.a CONTENTS Colonel Thomas Hoyer Monstery- The Unknown American Martial Arts Master I. Description : The book examines in detail one of the most controversial topic in current international law, namely the scope and extent of the right of individual self-defense. The book carefully traces the paths which have been followed in the developing legal debate on self-defense. The author uses numerous case-studies of incidents involving the use of force in alleged self-defense (such as the Entebbe Incident 1976, the Nicaragua Case 1986 or the Israeli-Lebanese conflict of 2006) which have formed the central point of scholarly debate. The author's conclusions are based not only on thorough analysis of academic discussions but also of the practice of States and international bodies, especially of the United Nations Organization. At the outset of the book the author reviews the historical context and the customary evolution of the right of self-defense. Reference is made to the famous Caroline Case of 1837, which set the necessary conditions of lawful exercise of self-defense. Next, the author examines the concept and legal nature of self-defense, carefully assessing the customary conditions of necessity, proportionality and immediacy derived from the Caroline Case. As the occurrence of an "armed attack" is a conditio sine qua non of lawful invocation of self-defense, several modalities of an armed attack are attentively evaluated such as its constituent elements, beginning or scale. The author explores, whether reactions to acts of international terrorism committed by a non-State may be based on the right of self-defense. In times of global terrorist networks it is highly desirable to attach special attention to use of force in self-defense as a remedy against serious acts of terrorism. Thorough analysis of State practice is shown on several examples from recent history - the U.S. air raid on Libya in 1986 and on Baghdad in 1993 and relatively recent air strikes on Sudan and Afghanistan in 1998. Reference is also made to the most striking example - the Al-Qaeda attack on the United States in 2001. The validity of claims of anticipatory/preventive self-defense is examined on a theoretical level and then applied to the specific details of the Israeli air strike on the Osiraq Nuclear Reactor in 1981. The two main approaches to preventive self-defense - "restrictive" and "traditional" - are then discussed in detail. Brief analysis is also devoted to the nature of the so-called - pre-emptive - self-defense indicating its current position under international law.

Included in this volume are chapters dealing with simple hand and wrist seizures, partial body seizures, and full embrace seizures. Although the methods set out in this martial arts manual do not require an extensive background in karate training, the authors recommend that the reader consult other volumes of the Practical Karate series, as well.
