Midlife Psychic Book Excerpt:

Hot flashes in my forties? Expected. Waking up psychic? Not in my wildest dreams. My name is Erin Stone. I’m forty-three with a daughter away at college and a successful career as a communications officer with the 911 dispatch center for the Toronto Police Service. My life had just returned to a new normal after my divorce and everything was going along smoothly. Then BOOM! Turns out the universe had other plans for me. I dreamed of a plane crash—only it wasn’t just a dream. The crash happened in real life. Eighty-three dead. A vision, plain and simple. Not exactly. My family certainly wouldn’t understand. And me…psychic? I’d dabbled in new-age spirituality in the past but never plunged into the deep end. Now I’m in over my head. Why was I given this vision, and does it hold clues as to what caused the crash? My best friend, Trish, is convinced it does, and a handsome stranger with the National Transportation Safety Board is willing to partner with me to solve the mystery. But if I’m going to embrace the vision as telling of newfound psychic abilities, I will need to keep my paranormal gift a secret from my daughter, brother, and aunt. Little good that might do them though. Someone out there has their own secrets and is willing to go to great lengths to protect them. Now the very gift I was given has put the lives of my loved ones at risk. Will my psychic abilities be strong enough to save them? This work of paranormal women’s fiction features a strong-willed heroine in her forties with enough baggage to check some, along with a heavy dose of magic and a splash of romance. Low Tide Murder Book Excerpt:

A horrific accident changes everything... Maddalena D’Angelo had it all! The perfect family, the perfect job, the perfect life. Until that fateful accident tore it all apart. Waking from a coma she found her family gone and the life she knew was no more. Scared and confused, nothing made sense. Everything was too much. But that wasn't the half of it... There was the part that she couldn't share with anyone. The part about being able to see a burst of colors radiating out from everyone she came into contact with - even the priest they sent to talk to her after the accident. It was like the colors were a part of them, their spirits, their souls, changing with their mood. She sketched them and painted them and her art was infused with their spirit. She couldn't go back to her life from before because only painful memories and regrets were left for her there. So, she ran away from the tragedy and the ghosts of her family with the only living being left from her old life - her dog, Karloff. To Seaside, Oregon. At forty-three she was starting again - a new business, new friends, a new life. Living simply, by the ocean, things became somewhat normal again, in a different way. She was... almost content. Until... Early one morning she discovered the body of a woman in a giant, pink inflatable flamingo, floating in the sea and around her, on the water, dark shadows were dancing on the tops of waves. Shadows that had a life of their own and didn't represent anything good, that's for sure. Things had changed for Maddalena again! Now she was using her art to find a killer and solve a murder. Can she work this mystery out before the shadows come for her? For Maddalena - Mystery is an Artform...

The Reluctant Psychic Book Excerpt:

Detective Senior Sergeant Lucielle ( Lucky) Lambert looked down at the naked body lying in the bath. The eyes were closed, the dark hair was plastered to her head with strands flattened against her cheeks and forehead and blood had trickled down the right side of her face from the fatal gash on her head. The makeup was a bit blurry and streaked, but overall, the body was in pretty good shape. Yes, she thought, I can definitely ID this body, there's no doubt, it's mine. The police are convinced it is an accidental death but she knows it was murder. But how can she find her killer when she can't identify him, there's no apparent motive and no evidence? Besides, being dead, she can't be seen or heard so how can she gather evidence or interview suspects? In desperation she decides to enlist the help of Evelyn, a reluctant psychic and a madcap character, who in the past suffered embarrassing indignity at the hands of the Police and is now no longer inclined to use her psychic ability to solve crimes. Lucky eventually convinces her to help and this sets them on a trail of murders that in some strange way seem connected to her own death.

Shirley Jackson Influences and Confluences Book Excerpt:

The popularity of such widely known works as "The Lottery" and The Haunting of Hill House has tended to obscure the extent of Shirley Jackson's literary output, which includes six novels, a prodigious number of short stories, and two volumes of domestic sketches. Organized around the themes of influence and intertextuality, this collection places Jackson firmly within the literary cohort of the 1950s. The contributors investigate the work that informed her own fiction and discuss how Jackson inspired writers of literature and film. The collection begins with essays that tease out what Jackson's writing owes to the weird tale, detective fiction, the supernatural tradition, and folklore, among other influences. The focus then shifts to Jackson's place in American literature and the impact of her work on women's writing, campus literature, and the graphic novelist Alison Bechdel. The final two essays examine adaptations of The Haunting of Hill House and Jackson's influence on contemporary American horror cinema. Taken together, the essays offer convincing evidence that half a century following her death, readers and writers alike are still finding value in Jackson’s words.

The Ashgate Research Companion to Paranormal Cultures Book Excerpt:

Despite the much vaunted ’end of religion’ and the growth of secularism, people are engaging like never before in their own ’spiritualities of life’. Across the West, paranormal belief is on the rise. The Ashgate Research Companion to Paranormal Cultures brings together the work of international scholars across the social sciences and humanities to question how and why people are seeking meaning in the realm of the paranormal, a heretofore subjugated knowledge. With contributions from the UK and other European countries, the USA, Australia and Canada, this ground-breaking book attends to the paranormal as a position from which to critique dominant forms of knowledge production and spirituality. A rich exploration of everyday life practices, textual engagements and discourses relating to the paranormal, as well as the mediation, technology and art of paranormal activity, this book explores themes such as subcultures and mainstreaming, as well as epistemological, methodological, and phenomenological questions, and the role of the paranormal in social change. The Ashgate Research Companion to Paranormal Cultures constitutes an essential resource for those interested in the academic study of cultural engagements with paranormality; it will appeal to scholars of cultural and media studies, popular culture, sociology, cultural geography, literature, film and music.

Radclyffe Hall Book Excerpt:

The Well of Loneliness is probably the most famous lesbian novel ever written, and certainly the most widely read. It contains no explicit sex scenes, yet in 1928, the year in which the novel was published, it was deemed obscene in a British court of law for its defense of sexual inversion and was forbidden for sale or import into England. Its author, Radclyffe Hall, was already well-known as a writer and West End celebrity, but the fame and notoriety of that one book has all but eclipsed a literary output of some half-dozen other novels and several volumes of poetry. In Radclyffe Hall: A Life in the Writing Richard Dellamora offers the first full look at the entire range of Hall's published and unpublished works of fiction, poetry, and autobiography and reads through them to demonstrate how she continually played with the details of her own life to help fashion her own identity as well as to bring into existence a public lesbian culture. Along the way, Dellamora revises many of the truisms about Hall that had their origins in the memoirs of her long-term partner, Una Troubridge, and that have found an afterlife in the writings of Hall's biographers. In detailing Hall's explorations of the self, Dellamora is the first seriously to consider their contexts in Freudian psychoanalysis as understood in England in the 1920s. As important, he uncovers Hall's involvement with other modes of speculative psychology, including Spiritualism, Theosophy, and an eclectic brand of Christian and Buddhist mysticism. Dellamora's Hall is a woman of complex accommodations, able to reconcile her marriage to Troubridge with her passionate affairs with other women, and her experimental approach to gender and sexuality with her conservative politics and Catholicism. She is, above all, a thinker continually inventive about the connections between selfhood and desire, a figure who has much to contribute to our own efforts to understand transgendered and transsexual existence today.
