Description : Brenda Berkman was often told that she couldn't do certain things because she was a girl. When she grew up, she longed for a job that was challenging, different every day, and required physical and mental strength. In 1977 when the New York City Fire Department finally complied with the Civil Rights Act (from 1964) by allowing women to take the FDNY exam, Brenda jumped at the chance. But the FDNY changed the rules of the exam so women wouldn't be able to pass it. Even a lot of men couldn't pass this new exam. So Brenda Berkman took the FDNY to court. In 1982, they finally made a fair test, and Brenda and 41 other women passed. Brenda went on to serve in the FDNY for 25 years, reaching the positions of Lieutenant and Captain, and was a first responder during the attacks on the Twin Towers on 9/11. After her retirement, Brenda founded the United Women Firefighters, an organization that helps train and prepare women to be firefighters. Send a Girl! is Brenda Berkman's inspiring story.

Description : A beautifully written food memoir chronicling one woman’s journey from her rural Midwestern hometown to the intoxicating world of New York City fine dining—and back again—in search of her culinary roots Before Amy Thielen frantically plated rings of truffled potatoes in some of New York City’s finest kitchens—for chefs David Bouley, Daniel Boulud, and Jean-Georges Vongerichten—she grew up in a northern Minnesota town home to the nation’s largest French fry factory, the headwaters of the fast food nation, with a mother whose generous cooking dripped with tenderness, drama, and an overabundance of butter. Inspired by her grandmother’s tales of cooking in the family farmhouse, Thielen moves north with her artist husband to a rustic, off-the-grid cabin deep in the woods. There, standing at the stove three times a day, she finds the seed of a growing food obsession that leads her to the sensory madhouse of New York’s top haute cuisine brigades. But, like a magnet, the foods of her youth draw her back home, where she comes face to face with her past and a curious truth: that beneath every foie gras sauce lies a rural foundation of potatoes and onions. Amy Thielen’s coming-of-age story pulses with energy, a cook’s eye for intimate detail, and a dose of dry Midwestern humor. Give a Girl a Knife offers a fresh, vivid view into New York’s high-end restaurants before returning Thielen to her roots, where she realizes that the marrow running through her bones is not demi-glace but gravy—thick with nostalgia and hard to resist.

Description : This book is based on the research analysis of a real online conversation between two persons that barely knew each other, and that started banging one another after a one night stand. One is a guy that bangs multiple girls at the same time, and the other is our girl, Daisy. Daisy gave away their conversation for the purpose of this book upon realizing that she was being cheated by a guy having sex with multiple women and not just her. Along these chapters, you will have a chance to see how a real Player manipulates a woman into having sex with her multiple times, and which strategies he uses, even when she doesn’t like him and doesn’t want sex with him. Along the conversations between these two, you will have a clear psychological analysis of the process occurring in each other’s mind to finally understand how to text any woman properly.

Description : “The letters of Richard and Mary Watkins are a treasure. A rare perspective offering tremendous insight into the daily life of both as they struggle with the hardships of war, farm operations and family concerns. A must read.” – Neal Wixson, editor, Echoes from the Boys of Company H -------------------------------- Between 1861 and 1865, Confederate Captain Richard Watkins and his wife Mary exchanged detailed and heartfelt letters. Richard had enlisted with Company K of the 3rd Virginia Calvary after Virginia seceded from the Union. Mary remained living near Meherrin, Virginia raising their three daughters and managing the farm. Sharing their letters with future generations was likely something the pair never envisioned. Editor Jeff Toalson, however, discovered, transcribed and annotated this extraordinarily rare collection of more than 300 unpublished letters. Held by the Virginia Historical Society, the letters convey detailed information about the war and daily life during a critical time in our nation’s history. Unlike military accounts of Civil War maneuvers and battles, the letters bring a clear sense of humanity to the conflict and its affects on those who lived through the time. Richard and Mary’s letters are touching and intriguing, weaving both a love story and an intense eyewitness account of the war. All of the major campaigns in Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania are covered. Jeff’s editing and attention to detail bring this heart-warming and engaging story to life. Despite the hardships, fears, disease and separation, you’ll be fascinated by the humor, depth and the stark realities of the Watkins’s lives.

Description : Toro's debut novel offers a divine love story that takes one man back and forth between the Northeast and Midwest. When Michael leaves New York City and returns to Ohio, where he grew up, his life is a shambles. His ex-wife allows him to stay with her as he gets back on his feet, but their relationship remains broken. However, God intervenes in Michael's life, starting with a miracle that cures his chronic anxiety. Michael then has a vision and falls in love with a girl he's never met and feels prompted by God to woo her. A series of small miracles occurs to assist him; for example, he sends her a photograph of an angel statue that unintentionally includes the digits of his phone number. The path to love is not without trials, and Michael, his ex-wife and his new love interest must go through a healing process before they can find happy endings. Toro tells the story using a rhythmic, poetic style, giving the novel a dreamlike quality that compliments its romantic elements. This style does have its limitations, however; although the book's prayers and dialogue have a pleasant ring, they don't necessarily resemble natural speech. One prayer reads, in part, "I'd like for this ride to end...to put an end to this terrible spin, and start me anew on who you're willing to send...a normal but blessed love about to begin." Some plot details are so finely woven into the prose that casual readers may miss key information. Overall, Michael does a great deal of praying and reflecting--a narrative choice that benefits from the work's rhythmic style--creating a story that focuses more on emotion than action. A marriage of poetry and prose for fans of inspirational and romantic fiction. -- Kirkus Reviews

Description : Stroll through any public park in Brooklyn on a weekday afternoon and you will see black women with white children at every turn. Many of these women are of Caribbean descent, and they have long been a crucial component of New York's economy, providing childcare for white middle- and upper-middleclass families. Raising Brooklyn offers an in-depth look at the daily lives of these childcare providers, examining the important roles they play in the families whose children they help to raise. Tamara Mose Brown spent three years immersed in these Brooklyn communities: in public parks, public libraries, and living as a fellow resident among their employers, and her intimate tour of the public spaces of gentrified Brooklyn deepens our understanding of how these women use their collective lives to combat the isolation felt during the workday as a domestic worker. Though at first glance these childcare providers appear isolated and exploited—and this is the case for many—Mose Brown shows that their daily interactions in the social spaces they create allow their collective lives and cultural identities to flourish. Raising Brooklyn demonstrates how these daily interactions form a continuous expression of cultural preservation as a weapon against difficult working conditions, examining how this process unfolds through the use of cell phones, food sharing, and informal economic systems. Ultimately, Raising Brooklyn places the organization of domestic workers within the framework of a social justice movement, creating a dialogue between workers who don't believe their exploitative work conditions will change and an organization whose members believe change can come about through public displays of solidarity.
