Description : When a gruesome cold case is reopened in a coastal Scottish town, dark secrets threaten those closest to the victim in this psychological thriller. It was a little more than three decades ago that thirteen-year-old Shona McIver was raped and murdered in Portobello, Scotland, a quiet seaside town just outside Edinburgh. To this day, the crime casts a shadow over the lives of her brother Tom and best friend Sarah. But when modern DNA evidence reveals that the wrong man was convicted, the case—and its terrible history—are reopened. Soon Sarah and Tom find themselves caught up in the search for the real culprit. And with everyone falling under suspicion, Sarah begins to realize that nothing in her seemingly perfect life is as it appears. But will the killer strike again before the truth is revealed?

Description : Get ready! You are taking a tour into the lives of some very special women of God. Each has worth "far more than rubies." These are true, very personal stories of their unique perspectives on God's love and their faith in His justice and power. They chose to share their stories so that through their struggles, others might find a faith and comfort that then brings the courage to go forward. They would say amen to Paul's exhortation to the Corinthian brethren: "Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows" (II Cor. 1:3-5 NIV).

Description : This study attempts to re-evaluate Lawrence's poetry, which has often been read as a set of biographical documents or supplementary notes to his novels, as fully independent literary work in the light of post-modern critical theory. The author carefully examines how Lawrence needed to misread his precursors, the nineteenth-century Romantics, to establish himself as one of the modern poets. What separates his poetry from his precursors' is his self-consciousness as a modern poet. His search for radical freedom in language and his meta-poetic exploration of a new poetic expression make him a true pioneer of the "terra incognita" in English poetry.

Description : This unique collection provides social work students and practitioners with critical analysis and practical guidance for working with abused women who are marginalized because of immigrant, refugee, or Aboriginal status. Out of the Shadows presents the work of Canadian academic researchers and frontline workers who demonstrate the increased risk faced by these women when they are victims of domestic violence, due to the racism inherent in our judicial and social systems. Our communities have neither fully faced nor met the challenges presented by this serious problem. Readers will be provoked to reflect on, and re-evaluate, the theoretical and political framework inherent in our service delivery systems and will be intrigued and delighted by accounts of culturally diverse women's groups and individuals who have transformed themselves from victims to victors.

Description : D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930) made a contribution to poetry that, in the words of Louise Bogan, "can now be recognized as one of the most important, in any language, of our time." Birds, Beasts and Flowers, his first great experiment in free verse, was published when he was thirty-eight. This Black Sparrow edition reprints the first edition (New York: Thomas Seltzer, 1923) with a few corrections of typographical errors and the restoration of a number of lines considered indecent in 1923. The cover reproduces D. H. Lawrence's design for the dust jacket of the first edition. Many of these individual poems are popular in anthologies. However, they are best read in the context and continuum of the whole book. In preparing the original collection for publication, Lawrence grouped the poems in a purposeful sequence. For a later printing he prefaced many of the sub-sections with brief quotations from the third edition of John Burnet's Early Greek Philosophy.

Description : In the Preface to this second edition of her first book, Sandra M. Gilbert addresses the inevitable question: "How can you be a feminist and a Lawrentian?" The answer is intellectually satisfying and historically revealing as she traces an array of early twentieth-century women of letters, some of them proto-feminists, who revered Lawrence despite his countless statements that would today be condemned as "sexist." H.D. regarded him as one of her "initiators" whose words "flamed alive, blue serpents on the page." Anais Nin insisted that he "had a complete realization of the feelings of women." By focusing on Lawrence’s own definition of a poem as an "act of attention," Gilbert demonstrates how he developed the mature style of Birds, Beasts and Flowers, his finest collection of poetry. She discusses this volume at length, examines many of his later poems in detail, including the hymns from The Plumed Serpent, Pansies, Nettles, and More Pansies, and ends with a close look at Last Poems. Her detailed examination provides a clearer image of Lawrence as an artist—an artist whose poetry complements his novels and whose fiction enriches but does not outshine his poetry.

Description : From early, rhyming work in Love Poems and Others (1913) to the groundbreaking exploration of free verse in Birds, Beast and Flowers (1923), the poems of D.H Lawrence challenged convention and inspired later poets. This voloume includes extensive selections from these and other editions, and contains some of his most famous poems, such as 'Piano', a nostalgic reflection on lost youth and love for his mother; ' Snake' , exploring human fear of the natural world; the short, cutting commment of sexual politics of 'Can't be Borne'; and the quiet philosophical resignation of 'Basta!'. Using the revised poems, but in the order in which they appear in their original collections, this selection offers a fresh perspective that revals an innovative poet who gave voice to his most intense emotions. In his introduction, James Fenton dicusses the early publication and critical reception of Lawrence's poems, his develpoments as a poet and his use of free verse. This edition also includes a chronology, further reading and appendices, including Lawrence's comments on the work of Walt Whitman.

Description : Glen Sharp’s boxing career was a rise-and-fall story without so much rise in it. A sparring partner for light-heavyweight Hall of Famer Yaqui López, he “retired” with a record of one victory and two defeats. A decade later, having come to understand how and why he failed as a younger fighter, he attempted a comeback. Told with heart and wit, his memoir is a treatise on boxing as both profession and purpose. Sharp uses economic theory to describe the sweet science as a case study in resource management while recounting his own struggle to win fistic glory and his father’s admiration.

Description : Although D. H. Lawrence is justly celebrated as the author of such seminal novels as The Rainbow, Sons and Lovers, Women in Love, The Plumed Serpent, and Lady Chatterley's Lover, he also produced a considerable body of poetry, collected together in a thousand-page volume in 1928. The overall quality of the writer's verse is superb. It is permeated with the Lawrencean voice, the incandescent language, the recurrent symbology, the sense of wonder at nature, the subtle portrayals of human relationships, and the metaphysical thrust. Mackey provides the first lengthy examination of Lawrence's poems. Complete with Chronology, Bibliography, and Index.

Now the Emperor of the West, the Augustus Galen Atreus, will come to the aid of the Emperor of the East, the Augustus Heraclius, to lift the siege of Constantinople and carry a great war to the very doorstep of the Shahanshah of Persia. Against this richly detailed canvas of alternate history and military strategy, Thomas Harlan sets the intricate and moving stories of four people. His teacher, Ahmet, undertakes to follow Dwyrin and aid him, but Ahmet is drawn into service with the queen of Palmeyra. Thyatis is a young female warrior, extensively trained by her patron in the arts of covert warfare. And Maxian Atreus is Galens youngest brother, a physician and sorcerer. He has discovered that an enemy of Rome has placed a dreadful curse on the City, which must be broken before Rome can triumph. Woven with rich detail youd expect from a first-rate historical novel, while through it runs yarns of magic and shimmering glamours that carry you deeply into your most fantastic dreams At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.
