Silenced Voices and Extraordinary Conversations Book Excerpt:

Two noted educators invite new and veteran teachers on an intellectual guided tour through the troubles of bad practice and the delights of good. This volume is a collection of classic essays, as urgently needed now as when they first appeared, on social class, race, gender, and schooling crafted over the course of two decades. The authors invite all of us to take a serious look at the paradox of public education, the ways in which urban schools reproduce social inequalities while, at the same time, serve as sites for learning at its most transformative and compelling. A must-read for all those educators who believe that we can no longer afford to cede this space to policymakers who know little of the life of a classroom, the curiosity of a child, and the moral imperatives of teaching for critical citizenship.

Silenced Paces Book Excerpt:

SILENCED PACES is an elaborated work addressed mainly to people who are willing to enhance their knowledge and understanding about the most troubled times of our world's history. The facts and their sequence are based on historical archives and data. This book is intended to unveil the events buried in the dimness of those times, lived by ordinary peoples, through horrors, sufferings, despair, famine, and unthinkable abuses, during and after the Second World War. The story depicts the shaking period of time between 1930 and 1980, and it's staged in Romania. The events are combined with the "saga" of a family whose daily ordeal solidifies even better the realities of those troubled times. Maybe, this book will help people to better understand the values of life and of their historical heritage, leaving them as a legacy to the coming generations, to be enhanced, shared, and treasured.

"This book is a timely reminder of how theatre can not just entertain, but enlighten and transform us too. The five plays it collects are wonderfully theatrical, moving fluidly from absurdism to tragedy, and from satire to the darkly comic. The translators give us versions that will stimulate and delight readers. performers and audiences. And by giving voice to the 'forgotten playwrights of Central Europe', they also deeply enrich our understanding of the relationship between art, ethics and politics in Europe - both in the past and the present."--BOOK JACKET.

Predatory Priests Silenced Victims Book Excerpt:

The sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic Church captured headlines and mobilized public outrage in January 2002. But much of the commentary that immediately followed was reductionistic, focusing on single "causes" of clerical abuse such as mandatory celibacy, homosexuality, sexual repressiveness or sexual permissiveness, anti-Catholicism, and a decadent secular culture. Predatory Priests, Silenced Victims: The Sexual Abuse Crisis and the Catholic Church, a collection of groundbreaking articles edited by Mary Gail Frawley-O'Dea and Virginia Goldner, eschews such one-size-fits-all theorizing. In its place, the abuse situation is explored in all its troubling complexity, as contributors take into account the experiences, respectively, of the victim/survivor, the abuser/perpetrator, and the bystander (whether family member, professional/clergy, or the community at large). Setting polemics to the side, Predatory Priests, Silenced Victims provides a sober and sobering analysis of the interlacing historical, doctrinal, and psychological issues that came together in the sexual abuse scandal. It is mandatory reading for all who seek thoughtful, informed commentary on a crisis long in the making and yet to be resolved.

Silenced But Determined Book Excerpt:

Born and raised in Houston, Texas, in the 1950s, I was raised during a time of political and racial unrest in America. However, I never witnessed a firsthand account of racism. I was exposed to the civil unrest in America, the unveiling of a truly dedicated, amazing, and remarkable man, Reverend Martin L. King Jr. (who in my opinion was the greatest black man in my lifetime). Also I believe that since the untimely death of Reverend King, the black community had never had a leader of relevance (my opinion). Silence But Determined tells a compelling true life story describing horrific life-changing events. The manner in which justice was utilized in my experience is reflective in comparison with modern-day slavery. A systematic doctrine of racism that I am led to believe that it does not really exist. The compelling doctrine that most people have come to believe in and live by has manifested grave injustice to people of color. I myself (not the victim) attempt to uncover the hidden truth about America's judicial system. Right out of the proverbial story needle in a haystack, when the question "who's to blame?" arises from the supporters and naysayers alike, how can I give a definitive answer? Well I'm determined to accomplish the feat of uncovering the needle in the haystack and give my answer to the question "who is to blame?" We tend to view life from a smaller vision looking through a smaller glass. So what must be done to give everyone a view from the same size of the glass? Reconstruct the criminal justice system in America (specifically in Houston, Texas) from top to bottom. A very unfortunate turn of events that definitely had a negative impact on a generation of black people's lives. I speak of how the system chewed me up and spit me out. Literally! For twenty-three years and three hundred and fifty-three days, I truly was enslaved in the criminal justice (not really) system. However, I instinctively rose from what many would have called being dead. I want to give tribute to God almighty! Truly God has brought me along to give this testimonial of how strong faith and belief can overcome any obstacle. God truly has the last word!

“If I could, I would put this book into the hands of every Christian in America.” —Dr. David Jeremiah “Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9). Each day, you watch America turn further from Christian values and the core principles of liberty. It’s frustrating to feel you can’t assert biblical truth without facing condemnation, and fearful to witness outrage and victimhood replace respect and reason. Amidst this dissent, how can you not only stay rooted in your own faith, but continue publicly testifying for Jesus? In We Will Not Be Silenced, Dr. Erwin W. Lutzer prepares you to live out your convictions against a growing tide of hostility. Gain a better understanding of nonbelievers’ legitimate hurts and concerns regarding issues like racism, sexism, and poverty—and identify the toxic responses secular culture disguises as solutions. In the process, you’ll see how you can show compassion and gentleness to those outside of the faith without affirming their beliefs. We Will Not Be Silenced will ready you to move beyond fear and boldly accept the challenge of representing Christ to a watching world that needs Him now more than ever before.

Marina Warner and the Ethics of Telling Silenced Stories Book Excerpt:

Efforts to fight back against silencing are central to social justice movements and scholarly fields such as feminist and postcolonial studies. But claiming to give voice to people who have been silenced always risks appropriating those people's stories. Lisa Propst argues that the British novelist and public intellectual Marina Warner offers some of the most provocative contemporary interventions into this dilemma. Tracing her writing from her early journalism to her novels, short stories, and studies of myths and fairy tales, Propst shows that in Warner's work, features such as stylized voices and narrative silences - tales that Warner's books hint at but never tell - question the authority of the writer to tell other people's stories. At the same time they demonstrate the power of literature to make new ethical connections between people, inviting readers to reflect on whom they are responsible to and how they are implicated in social systems that perpetuate silencing. By exploring how to combat silencing through narrative without reproducing it, Marina Warner and the Ethics of Telling Silenced Stories takes up an issue crucial not just to literature and art but to journalists, policy makers, human rights activists, and all people striving to formulate their own responses to injustice.
