Simply Good News Book Excerpt:

The Gospel means good news, but what makes it news? If the message has been around for 2,000 years, what could possibly be newsworthy about it? And what makes it good? Surely not the stories we hear of damnation, violence, and an angry God. Tom Wright believes many Christians have lost sight of what the ‘good news’ of the gospel really is. In Simply Good News, he shows how a first-century audience would have received the gospel message, what the ‘good news’ means for us today and how it can transform our lives.

Into the Fray Book Excerpt:

In the earliest days of the Christian church, the gospel spread out from Jerusalem in a burst of incredible stories. A man who could calm a stormy sea with a word, who healed the lame and the blind, who raised the ire of the religious leaders, and who even raised people from the dead. Compare this organic, even entertaining, method of spreading the Good News to how we are often encouraged to evangelize today, with clever arguments and our defenses already up in anticipation of rebuttal. Somewhere along the way, we've lost the plot to the greatest story ever told. Now Matt Mikalatos invites us back into God's story, both to find our place in it and to rediscover the wonder that the apostles saw in their listeners as they told the story of Jesus, the Messiah they knew personally and loved fiercely. As they lose themselves in modern retellings of the events of the book of Acts, readers will find that sharing the story is easier and more rewarding than they ever imagined.

A Commentary on Romans Book Excerpt:

Why would Paul write his longest letter to a church he had not founded or even visited? This expositor believes the answer lies in its history, culminating in a major crisis which could have split the whole church into two denominations. Originally Jewish (Acts 2:10-11), it soon attracted Gentiles, who were left on their own when Claudius evicted all Jews (Acts 18:2). In their absence a teaching emerged which we now know as 'Replacement Theology', believing that God has rejected the Jews and turned instead to the Christian Church as his chosen people on earth, a view which, alas, is now widespread. Paul's carefully argued answer shows how much believing Jews and Gentiles have in common, both in sin and salvation, in flesh and Spirit. This approach treats 'Chapters 9-11', (divisions never in his letter) as an integral part of his appeal, reaching its climax in a threefold challenge to the arrogance of the Gentile believers in Rome (11:18, 20, 25) in not warmly welcoming back into the fellowship the Jews who were allowed to return under Nero. This 'key' unlocks the whole epistle, from the solemn warning that believers can lose their salvation (11:20-22) to the careful instruction on how to live with 'disputable matters' such as diet and days (14:1 - 15:13); and ends with so many commands to greet each other with 'a holy kiss' (16:16). However, as with most of Paul's practical counsel, all this is firmly rooted in sound 'gospel' theology.

The Gospel in the Dock Book Excerpt:

C. S. Lewis famously penned the phrase "God in the Dock" and proposed that there was a "great divide" between ancient and modern humans, in that our ancestors would have rightly seen themselves "in the dock" before God, while we moderns have placed God there before us. But what if what God's love most desires for us, the gospel or "good news" of the only way of life for humanity, has been "in the dock" before us from the time of Adam and Eve? And what if it is also the case that the gospel is often "in the dock" as though it is not good--even for the church? This book builds upon and expands the "life and death" stakes Lewis proposed by demonstrating that the gospel way of faith itself has been placed in the dock by us and in many ways ruined our relationships with God, with our own selves, with one another, and even with the natural world itself which we are meant to "steward" for its good. In these pages the reader will discover why the gospel that requires faith is good news, but why we so tragically default to our divisive and self-destructive ways.

Beuving carefully examines music in the Bible and looks at the various and powerful ways in which music influences our world and our personal lives. The Disciple Maker s Handbook Book Excerpt:

Many people believe that discipleship is important, but they need help. In fact, the vast majority of Christians report that they have never been personally discipled by a more mature follower of Jesus. Is it any wonder that they have a difficult time knowing how to disciple others? If making disciples of Jesus is the greatest cause on earth, how should we equip people to do it? This handbook is a practical guide for how to embrace the discipleship lifestyle – being a disciple of Jesus and how to make other disciples of Jesus. With contributions from pastors and teachers like Francis Chan, Jeff Vanderstelt, Bill Hull, Jim Putman, KP Yohannan, and Robert Coleman, the authors present seven elements that are necessary for disciple making to occur: Jesus—the original disciple maker and centerpiece of discipleship. Holy Spirit—fuels the disciple-making process. Intentionality—making disciples utilizing a strategy and a roadmap. Relationships—creating a loving, genuine connection with others who trust and follow Jesus. Bible—using the Word of God as the manual for making disciples. Journey—forging a traceable growth story from a new birth to spiritual parenthood. Multiply—reproducing the discipleship process so that the disciple becomes a disciple maker. Whether you are a parent who wants to disciple your children, a small group leader who wants to disciple those in your group, or a church leader who wants to disciple future leaders, the seven key elements in this handbook form a framework for understanding discipleship that can be applied in countless situations. In addition, there are questions provided in each section to help you think through how to apply the material to your disciple making efforts.

Ten Great Ideas from First Corinthians Book Excerpt:

First Corinthians is one of the most relevant NT documents for both younger churches seeking maturity in the majority world and older churches seeking renewal in the Western world in the twenty-first century. The reason this epistle is so relevant is that it focuses on renewing the church through believing and living out the good news that because of Jesus’s death and resurrection God has begun his new creation agenda amid the broken world of today. This is not just another commentary (there are many very good ones) but rather we present a biblical theology of church renewal, based on solid exegesis, and our experience as teachers and pastors in both Africa and North America. This book will pull out the essential teaching of Paul on renewal in ten manageable principles, or “great ideas.” Church renewal is not just following certain steps but results from nurturing a culture that practices both cross power and a life of new creation hope. When churches make the shift from traditionalism to radical community and evangelical activism through a new experience of the gospel seen as both personal liberation and the transformation of all things, the church begins to move, and the world begins to change.

Becoming Like Jesus Book Excerpt:

In the last sermon he ever preached, John Stott echoed the Apostle Paul when he said that God’s greatest desire and plan for us is to become like his Son, Jesus Christ. BUT HOW? Stott prayed daily that God would bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit in his own life; a prayer clearly answered and evident in his Christlikeness. Chris Wright, a close friend of John Stott, reflects on all nine qualities that the Apostle Paul includes in the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians. He shows how they are rooted in the character of God, first revealed in the Old Testament, and modelled and taught by Jesus. With applications to encourage biblical growth with depth, and questions at the end of each chapter, this is an ideal resource for preachers, study groups and personal reflection. Many people rightly stress the importance of the gifts, power and ministries of the Holy Spirit, but easily neglect Paul’s command to live and walk by the Spirit and cultivate the fruit that only he can bear in our lives. Paying close attention to the beautiful and robust qualities that Paul includes in the fruit, and seeking daily to cultivate them with God’s help, is surely one way we can become more and more like Jesus.
