Six Years Book Excerpt:

A lost love... and the secrets and lies at its heart. The stunning novel from No.1 bestseller Harlan Coben. Six years have passed since Jake Fisher watched Natalie, the love of his life, marry another man. Six years of hiding a broken heart by throwing himself into his career. Six years of keeping his promise to leave Natalie alone, and six years of tortured dreams of her life with her new husband, Todd. But six years haven't come close to extinguishing his feelings, and when Jake comes across Todd's obituary, he can't keep himself away from the funeral. There he gets the glimpse of Todd's wife he's hoping for... but she is not Natalie - and Jake's world is turned completely inside out. As Jake searches for the truth, his picture-perfect memories of Natalie begin to unravel. Mutual friends of the couple either can't be found or don't remember Jake. No one has seen Natalie in years. Jake's search for the woman who broke his heart - and who lied to him - soon puts his very life at risk as it dawns on him that the man he has become may be based on carefully constructed fiction.

Six Years of Darkness Book Excerpt:

Part One: SIX YEARS OF DARKNESS Refugees from the Nazis, seventeen-year-old Joni Morgen and her mother arrive in blacked out London in November 1939, after an eight-months stint as domestic servants at a seaside resort. Standing on the wet pavement outside Victoria Station, Joni takes one look at the hustle and bustle of the busy street and is immediately sucked into the spirit of this great city. There is no other place where she wants to be at this time in history. She remains in London through air raids, destruction, shortages, financial stresses and twelve hour work days. Finally the war was over. With youthful optimism she writes: "Peace! Peace on Earth! No man, woman or child will ever be killed again, no bomb dropped, no torpedo fired. World peace. How long mankind longed for that. Now itOs real." Part Two: THIS NEW LIFE Seven years after the war, Britain is still trying to recover from its devastation. Disillusioned, tired of unending rationing, bomb-damaged buildings, shortages and personal restrictions, Joni and her friend Gerda, both alone in the world immigrate to Canada. An unexpectedly carefree and exciting new life opens up for thirty-year-old Joni, a striking contrast to the severity of the war years. The personal nature of these stories allows the reader to walk in the shoes of an "enemy alien" during the war, and an adventurous young woman seeking a purpose in life after the war.

The Eighty Six Year Gap Book Excerpt:

The great depression of 29 and why it continued, because of the lack of camaraderie between industry, capital, management and labor the ingredient's you have to have to make the system work. When did it end? Well, it didn`t end, in 1939 president F.D.R. made a moratorium, a suspension of any strikes or negotiation because of the war in Europe, his hope was to keep us out of the war. We would keep Europe supplied with the tools of war. It didn't keep us out of the war, after the attack on Pearl Harbor we realized we could be reached and declared war. More than 11million men would serve and return home as the factories begin to shutdown down, there wouldn`t be enough jobs for our returning men. The unions wanted president Truman to release the moratorium and when he did under pressure the inflation rose 25%. The government realized there wouldn`t be enough jobs and decided, education was the problem, this lead to the great education explosions. We would lose 3 generations of our children to LSD and the hippies movement. Today we have only two large employers the prevailing wage workers and the educational, all dependent on your taxes both with union ties while the gap workers lay dormant. And yet today we still think education is the way to create jobs while our infrastructure is crumbling along with creating more people living in poverty and on welfare as a way of life. There is a way to fix this, the round table and look eye to eye, to each other.

Gender and Judging Book Excerpt:

Does gender make a difference to the way the judiciary works and should work? Or is gender-blindness a built-in prerequisite of judicial objectivity? If gender does make a difference, how might this be defined? These are the key questions posed in this collection of essays, by some 30 authors from the following countries; Argentina, Cambodia, Canada, England, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Ivory Coast, Japan, Kenya, the Netherlands, the Philippines, South Africa, Switzerland, Syria and the United States. The contributions draw on various theoretical approaches, including gender, feminist and sociological theories. The book's pressing topicality is underlined by the fact that well into the modern era male opposition to women's admission to, and progress within, the judicial profession has been largely based on the argument that their very gender programmes women to show empathy, partiality and gendered prejudice - in short essential qualities running directly counter to the need for judicial objectivity. It took until the last century for women to begin to break down such seemingly insurmountable barriers. And even now, there are a number of countries where even this first step is still waiting to happen. In all of them, there remains a more or less pronounced glass ceiling to women's judicial careers.
