Description : It is natural that the book demanding our belief in such great things should be asked for its credentials and that these credentials should be subjected to the most searching investigation. The Bible has nothing to fear, however, from the keenest scrutiny of any scholar who has only the desire to get at the truth. The trouble begins when a critic, who is hostile to its spiritual truth of who has a theory to maintain, takes a part in the investigation; even then the truth is sure, in time, to assert its rightful claim.-from "Study VI: The Christian's Book"Part of a respected series of books designed to direct Bible studies, this 1905 volume is still extremely useful for those looking to find guidance and wisdom in that ancient work. From the simplest of questions-What did Christ teach?-to those more profound-How can we apply Christian principles to modern life?-this useful book explores how to bring Christ's influence to bear at home, in the business world, and in society at large.HENRY THORNE SELL (1854-1928) also wrote Bible Studies in the Life of Christ and Bible Studies in the Life of Paul.

Description : Medieval Studies and the Computer focuses on the use of computers in medieval studies and humanities research. Topics covered range from encoding and concording texts to the use of conceptual glossaries by medievalists, as well as the use of computers for compiling Middle English lexicography and the Wisconsin Dictionary of the Old Spanish Language. A computer analysis of metrical patterns in the epic Beowulf and of Notker Labeo's Old High German is also presented. Comprised of 26 chapters, this volume begins by discussing "contexts" in concordances and the set of conventions employed in text encoding. The reader is then introduced to the series of initiatives undertaken in Belgium to study Latin literature and linguistics; the use of conceptual glossaries by medieval scholars; and the use of the computer to make a word list of the Decretum Gratiani and to study Geoffrey Chaucer's vocabulary. Subsequent chapters discuss a computer program called KLIC (Key Letter In Context) for graphological analysis; a set of routines written in SAIL (Stanford Artificial Intelligence Language) for use by social historians in quantitative analysis or text processing; and the use of Mark IV, a general-purpose file management system, to analyze medieval charters. This book will be of interest to medievalists, social historians, students and scholars of humanities, and computer scientists.

Description : During more than fifty years in medical research, Elwood honed his skills in evaluating evidence—evidence of benefit from drugs, from clinical procedures, and above all, from lifestyle. The overall aim throughout was not just an increase in survival but also the enriching of the health and the well-being of patients. In this book, Elwood examines the person and the life of Jesus and its relevance to our daily lives and to our relationships. Starting with the virgin birth, he examines the evidence in the story by Mary that her conception and pregnancy were unique and are consistent with the person of Jesus having a human and a divine origin. He then examines the life and teaching of Jesus and shows how this can enrich and give purpose to the lives of those who follow Jesus. Finally, Elwood reconstructs the details of the death and the resurrection of Jesus and attempts to explain some of the underlying purposes and meaning for us of these events. In neither his medical work nor in this book does Elwood ever claim proof, freely admitting there is always another possible explanation. Throughout the book, Elwood sees faith as one possible response to evidence, but he commends the seeking of further evidence as an indication of honest doubt on the part of the inquirer.

Description : The keystone of Christianity is Jesus’s physical, bodily resurrection. Present-day scholars can be significantly challenged as they forage through voluminous documents on the resurrection of Jesus. The literature measures well over seven thousand sources in English-language books alone. This makes finding specific sources that are most relevant for specific scholarly purposes an arduous task. Even when a specific book is relevant, finding the parts of the book that are most relevant to the resurrection rather than other topics often requires additional effort. A Thematic Access-Oriented Bibliography of Jesus’s Resurrection addresses these challenges in several ways. First, the bibliography organizes more than seven thousand English sources into twelve main categories and then thirty-four subcategories, which are designed to help you find the most relevant literature quickly and efficiently. Embedded are pro and con arguments which support efficient access through brief annotations and then annotate the diversity and complexity of the field of religion by including sources that represent a diverse range of views: theistic (e.g., Christian, Jewish, Muslim, etc.), agnostic, and nontheistic. The objective of this bibliography is to provide convenient access to relevant sources from a variety of perspectives, allowing you to browse or find the one source accurately and with ease.

Description : 60 studies for small groups from the New Testament. You may think you know what you're getting here ... but you'd be wrong. This book uses the episodic architecture of the Gospels to walk beyond the Bible's stories and reveal Jesus using four perspectives: -A government agent-telling the story with order and precision (Matthew) -A friend-posting details shared around the common dinner table (Mark) -A physician/psychiatrist-fascinated by the remarkable (Luke) -A mama's boy and early disciple-offering the "inside story" (John)Typical cell-group Bible studies focus on learning content or memorizing a text. That may work for individuals, but not for groups. These studies tap into how we best grow and learn: -Working out of EPIC stories we naturally remember-Exploring social values through relationships-Using study questions connected to our learning preferences-Connecting three stories-God's story, another's story and our story. So, get ready for sessions that are really not Bible studies; they are tricks and mirrors that catch you in the act of being real. Featuring the best of the original Serendipity Bible questions, updated for today's groups.
