Description : Reflecting the dramatic changes shaped by rapidly developing technologies over the past six years, this new fourth edition of "Reference and Information Services" takes the introduction to reference sources and services significantly beyond the content of the first three editions. In Part I, Concepts and Processes, chapters have been revised and updated to reflect new ideas and methods in the provision of reference service in an era when many users have access to the Web. In Part II, "Information Sources and Their Use," discussion of each source type has been updated to encompass key resources in print and on the Web, where an increasing number of freely available sources join those purchased or licensed by libraries. A number of new authors are contributors to this new edition, bringing to their chapters their experience as teachers of reference and as practitioners in different types of libraries. Discussions of services in Part I integrate digital reference as appropriate to each topic, such as how to conduct a reference interview online using instant messaging. Boxes interspersed in the text are used to present scenarios for discussion, to highlight key concepts, or to present excerpts from important documents. Discussions of sources in Part II place more emphasis on designing effective search strategies using both print and digital resources. The chapter on selection and evaluation of sources addresses the changing nature of reference collections and how to evaluate new types of sources. Each chapter concludes with an updated list of additional readings to guide further study. A new companion website will provide links to Web-accessible readings and resources as well as additional scenarios for discussion and example search strategies to supplement those presented in the text.

Description : Excerpt from Journal of the Statistical Society: General Index to Volumes XXVI-XXXV (1863-72), In Continuation of the General Indexes to Volumes I-XV (1834-52) And XVI-XXV (1853-62) The object which has been kept in view has been, not only to make the Index of the greatest possible use to all who may casually consult it, but also to render it a valuable work of reference to the Statistical Student, in which he may discover as many collateral or cognate facts as possible in illustration of the subject on which he is engaged; and may be assisted in those philosophical generalisations of which the science of Statistics is so peculiarly the foundation. To achieve this end, in addition to the usual alphabetical arrangement of the subjects, a series of abstracts of the contents of each paper contained in the Journal has been introduced, which abstracts afford the means of seeing, almost at a glance, what each article contains. These abstracts will also be found to embrace many smaller matters of too indefinite a character to be easily placed under any fixed heading in a mere Alphabetical Index, but still of some importance in connection with the subject of which they form a part, though otherwise of little use from the want of that connecting link which alone gave them their value. Description : The second edition of this guide to basic reference sources in the social sciences contains nearly three times as many entries, - 2,200 - as the earlier edition and also includes several other notable enhancements. In addition to revising and substantially enlarging the chapters on reference sources, Li has further increased the usefulness of this reference volume by adding a chapter on geography and one on business that is distinct from economies. Since the publication of the first edition, there have been two obvious developments in information storage and retrieval: the rapid development of online databases and the development of CD-ROM. Instead of devoting a separate chapter to these developments, the book incorporates online databases, CD-ROM and other forms of data sources into the text. In addition, there is a brief introduction to these developments. Although the general deadline for inclusion in the volume was December 1988, quite a few titles published in 1989 are included.
