Description : No sooner have they mastered the basics than students of theology can quickly find themselves in over their heads. They are bombarded with claim and counter-claim as soon as they want to tackle anything topical. The contentious subjects tend to be the historical Jesus, gender and sexuality, or the atonement. Other subjects might be less contentious but attract an astonishing excess of literature. Take the vast literature tackling the subject of the Church, for instance, or the bloated body of tomes on various aspects of Pneumatology. This book tries to provide the bewildered and intimidated student with a primer that is at once introductory and incisive; approachable and informative. It will help those training for ministry to recover their fascination for the subject of theology and how it could apply to their future ministry.

Description : The worship and organization of the Christian church must be defined by the Hellenistic world in which it took root and emerged victorious over Roman Imperial paganism. The struggle of the early church to maintain a testimony and doctrine that would be faithful to the "Rule of Faith"--which was established by the authority of certain Apostles who had the biggest impact in setting up the missional churches of the first century--and would conform to Jesus Christ's earthly ministry. Eusebia (piety) marks the Hellenistic understanding of all worship based on the relationships that are changed as a result of an encounter with a supreme being. This opens the door to explore all the aspects of Church History as a product of corporate worship. Five cities emerge in the apologetic and concilar church ages (150-850 CE) that have the greatest impact on the world of Christianity for all time. Those churches are called the Patristic churches because their bishops became the power holders of all the churches (for good or for bad). This book provides insight into the contribution of the five patriarchal cities (Jerusalem, Antioch, Alexandria, Rome, and Constantinople) to the worship, polity, doctrine, and traditions of the church. The account begins with the exegetical back-drop of the Hebrew and Greek words for worship and the impact of these in the milieu of a Jewish church and a gentile church. The study of the patriarchal leadership in the apostolic, apologetic, and concilar ages of the church marks a clear direction of the church to the beginnings of the medieval era. It clearly delineates the differences in the East and West and the struggles within the Empire to gain unity through preeminence of polity. A unique approach was taken to combine the historical events and activities of the leaders of each of the churches with motive and intent toward good or bad. It was written from a Protestant and Orthodox perspective, which adds insight to set up the spiritual and theological reasons for the Reformation that begun under Wycliffe, Huss, and later Luther.

Description : Everlasting hell and divine judgment, a lake of fire and brimstone--these mainstays of evangelical tradition have come under fire once again in recent decades. Would the God of love revealed by Jesus really consign the vast majority of humankind to a destiny of eternal, conscious torment? Is divine mercy bound by the demands of justice? How can anyone presume to know who is saved from the flames and who is not? Reacting to presumptions in like manner, others write off the fiery images of final judgment altogether. If there is a God who loves us, then surely all are welcome into the heavenly kingdom, regardless of their beliefs or behaviors in this life. Yet, given the sheer volume of threat rhetoric in the Scriptures and the wickedness manifest in human history, the pop-universalism of our day sounds more like denial than hope. Mercy triumphs over judgment; it does not skirt it. Her Gates Will Never Be Shut endeavors to reconsider what the Bible and the Church have actually said about hell and hope, noting a breadth of real possibilities that undermines every presumption. The polyphony of perspectives on hell and hope offered by the prophets, apostles, and Jesus humble our obsessive need to harmonize every text into a neat theological system. But they open the door to the eternal hope found in Revelation 21-22: the City whose gates will never be shut; where the Spirit and Bride perpetually invite the thirsty who are outside the city to "Come, drink of the waters of life."

Description : Have you ever wondered why John the Baptist introduced Jesus Christ as the Lamb of God? Why not introduce Him as the promised heir to the throne of King David? Why is a crimson path essential for the plan of redemption? This book will answer these questions and take the reader on a journey through the ages. This journey will reveal the foreshadows that foretell the redemptive mission of the Lamb of God. In this exposition, the foreshadows recorded in the Old Testament will be identified and the resemblance of each foreshadow will be correlated with the plan of fulfillment recorded in the New Testament.

Description : Janet Jagers has taught the Bible for forty-five years in women's Bible classes, Child Evangelism Fellowship, and Awana programs. She is a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors and is currently studying to become a biblical counselor through Light University. Janet is a survivor of breast cancer, Lyme disease, and lupus and writes to encourage other women as they go through similar trials. Seeing a need for studies on women in the Bible written from a woman's perspective, she is now turning her years of teaching notes into book form. Her greatest desire is to help women to develop a strong relationship with Jesus Christ and to pass their faith on to their children. She and her husband of fifty-five years, Donald, have three children who are all actively involved in Christian ministry, eight grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Janet currently resides in South Carolina. Why are women mentioned in the genealogy of our Lord in the first chapter of Matthew? Why five women instead of three or four or even seven? And why these particular women who are so very different? Janet Jagers answers these and other questions in her book, The Five Women of Matthew 1. Listen to the stories of Tamar the Canaanite, Rahab the Harlot, Ruth the Moabite, Bathsheba the Israelite, and Mary the Mother of Jesus. As we study the lives of these five extraordinary women, we will discover wonderful truths like-no woman is so bad that she cannot be saved, and no woman is so good that she does not need to be saved. As their stories unfold, we will discover anew the unfathomable debt of God's amazing grace and unfailing love.

Description : Are the Jewish arguments against belief in Jesus as mankind's Savior any good? Is Jesus Christ the promised Messiah of the Old Testament's prophecies? Is Christianity derived from ancient Roman or Greek pagan mystery religions? Is the New Testament historically reliable? Was Jesus of Nazareth God according to the New Testament? Did Gnosticism influence Christianity? Since some 185,000 Americans have converted to Judaism according to a 1990 survey, the arguments of such groups as Jews for Judaism against Christianity can't be dismissed lightly. Using solid scholarship and rigorous logic, A Zeal For God Not According to Knowledge defends Christianity against the arguments of its Jewish critics, such as Samuel Levine, Michoel Drazin, Tovia Singer, and Hyam Maccoby. This book demonstrates that the New Testament is historically reliable, denies that Christian doctrines and sacraments can be derived from pagan beliefs and practices, shows that Jesus of Nazareth was the promised Messiah based on the Old Testament's prophecies, and proves that the New Testament teaches the Deity of Christ. This book is intended for both Christians perplexed by the arguments of Jewish friends, coworkers, and relatives, and Jews interested in objectively considering the claims of Christianity while searching for spiritual truth about whether Jesus is their Messiah also.

Description : Over the last 500 years, blood-red moons have fallen on the first day of Passover three separate times. These occurrences were connected to some of the most significant days in Jewish history: 1492 (the final year of the Spanish Inquisition when Jews were expelled from Spain), 1948 (statehood for Israel and the War of Independence) and 1967 (the Six-Day War). The next series of four blood moons occurs at Passover and Sukkot in 2014 and 2015. In this devotional study guide, Pastor Hagee challenges readers to further explore the meaning behind blood moons, understand why Christians must recognize these signs that God refers to in Scripture, and absorb their prophetic significance. Ideal for individuals and groups, this devotional study guide combines questions and reflective journaling for deeper meaning and life application.

Description : With this volume on Paul's Letter to the Galatians, Dr Bruce Epperly, author of Philippians: A Participatory Study Guide, Finding God in Suffering: A Journey with Job, and Transforming Acts: Acts of the Apostles as a 21st Century Gospel, again brings the study of a Bible book to life for a 21st century audience. Epperly founds his work in the results on modern critical scholarship, but he's not content with reciting scholarship or discussing history. He aims to make the study of this theologically central letter a transformative experience. He does so by never losing sight of the fact that human problems remain human problems and that human potentiality, touched by God's grace, can accomplish great things. He finds a message of liberation in this book. Liberation from our guilt, yes, but also liberation from our self-imposed limitations. Through reading, discussion, exercises, and thought questions, he leads the reader through a study that can only be described as an adventure. It's an adventure you won't want to miss.
