Hip Dysplasia Book Excerpt:

This book represents the most advanced understanding of diagnosis and management of hip dysplasia in the young adult, written by the world’s leading experts and covering advanced imaging and biomechanical studies as well as latest surgical techniques. This is especially timely, as the field of hip preservation surgery is in constant evolution, and it is critical that surgeons and researchers combine their efforts to provide the best evidence-based knowledge to all health care providers evaluating and treating patients suffering from pre-arthritic hip pain. Not only does this book discuss the most up-to-date information on the etiology and natural history of hip dysplasia, as well as pathomechanics and traditional and advanced imaging, it also presents new conceptions of its classification and subsequent management. The focus throughout the book is that hip dysplasia is a problem of instability, where both the bony structure and the soft tissue envelope (i.e., capsule, ligaments and muscles) are at play. Moreover, although corrective osteotomies such as the peri-acetabular osteotomy will remain the dominant treatment option, non-surgical treatments as well as hip arthroscopy are now being increasingly recognized as useful adjuncts in order for our patients to return to their desired activities. Finally, as the longevity of joint replacement surgery has improved dramatically, this should be strongly considered in cases where the outcome of joint preserving surgery is not as predictable. Orthopedic surgeons, sports medicine physicians, physiatrists and physiotherapists alike will find this book a valuable resource when treating the young adult with symptomatic hip dysplasia.

Principles of Hip Arthroscopy Book Excerpt:

The field of arthroscopy, originating from Denmark in 1912, has rapidly evolved to diagnose and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal pathologies. Although around for sometime, arthroscopy in the field of orthopedics has traditionally focused on the knee, shoulder, or elbow, as arthroscopy of the hip is technically challenging; the deep structures of the hip, including neurovascular bundles, require specialized training and equipment to access. However, with advances in surgical techniques, hip arthroscopy has become increasingly popular given its ability to treat pathologies with previously poor prognoses such as labral tears, hip arthritis and femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). When indicated, hip arthroscopy results in shorter recovery times, low complication rates, and excellent outcomes in quality of life and pain regardless of age, gender or activity level. The purpose of this e-book is to shed light on this expanding field by delving into the common hip pathology femoroacetabular impingement, its clinical relevance, and to explore various surgical techniques and postoperative rehabilitation. It is our hope that this textbook provides valuable knowledge to advance the field of hip arthroscopy, enhance surgical techniques, and ultimately increase the quality of patient care. Enjoy! Biomechanics of the Knee Book Excerpt:

Pathological conditions affecting the hip and knee joints occupy a particular place amongst the important orthopaedic entities affecting the extremities. On the one hand they are relatively frequent and on the other they mean for the patient limitation of his ability to walk, because of their considerably detrimental effects. A purposeful basic treatment of these joint diseases (and here osteoarthritis takes pride of place) is only possible if it stems from a reliable biomechanical analysis of the normal and patho logical stressing of the joint in question. Whilst the situation in the hip can be considered to be fundamentally clarified, a com prehensive representation of the knee is still lacking particularly when taking into account the latest knowledge of biomechanics. Recently our concepts of the kinematics of the knee have been completely changed, but the clinically important question of articular stressing remains unanswered. Dr. Maquet has carried out pioneer work in this field for some years in adapting, by analogy, to the knee joint, principles already accepted for the hip joint. Since the knee is not a ball and socket joint, a complicated problem arises for which new thoughts are necessary. The results of the numerous operations carried out by Dr. Maquet according to the biomechanical con siderations, demonstrate that his thinking is fundamentally correct. Above all, it is here again proven (as earlier in the case of the hip) that healing of osteoarthritis depends decisively on reducing and evenly distributing joint pressure.

Arthritis of the Knee Book Excerpt:

Early in its development, the subject matter of any field of surgery is too ill-defined and opinions are too fluid for the production of a book on the subject to be possible. Late in its development, controversy is at an end, and although it is still possible to produce a textbook, it is too late to produce a book that might stimulate discussion and crystallise ideas. This book has that objective, it being the Editor's view that the field of the surgical treatment of arthritis of the knee had reached an appropriate intermediate stage in 1978 when this text was written. Three broad issues stand out as being in need of resolution before the optimum form of surgical treatment for a given knee can be defined more convincingly than is possible at present: Firstly: What symptomatic and physical features of the knee are to be recorded pre- and post-operatively, upon the basis of which comparisons can be made between the results obtained by two different surgeons or with two different tech niques. The resolution of this issue requires general agreement not only upon what features of the knee should be recorded but, crucially, upon how these features should subsequently be presented so as to characterise a particular group of knees.

Total Hip Arthroplasty A Comprehensive Clinical Guide Book Excerpt:

Total hip arthroplasty is a surgical procedure in which a damaged or worn out hip joint is replaced with a prosthetic implant. This surgery is usually performed to resolve a hip fracture or a severe case of arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and traumatic arthritis commonly affect the hip joint. Other conditions that can cause joint failure of the hips include benign and malignant bone tumors, avascular necrosis, protrusio acetabuli, etc. A total hip replacement involves the replacement of the acetabulum and the femoral heal. This is a very common orthopedic procedure. Certain complications may occur after total hip arthroplasty. Dislocation is the chief complication in such surgeries. It may occur due to relaxed soft tissues and incomplete scar formation. Other complications include intraoperative fractures, vein thrombosis, loosening of the prosthesis, osteolysis, metal sensitivity and toxicity, etc. Most of these complications are however infrequent and largely preventable. Employing strategies such as using antibiotics routinely, using improved prosthetic materials and surfaces, etc. can prevent complications from arising. This book explores all the important aspects of total hip arthroplasty in the present day scenario. It strives to provide a fair idea about this operative procedure and to help develop a better understanding of the latest advances in its execution. With state-of-the-art inputs by acclaimed experts of orthopedics, this book targets students and professionals.
