Description : Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1908, Vol. 135 This accepted method of treatment could almost be called classic, for it received its first impulse from Cruveilhier at the time of the modern awakening of medicine, and its development has been asso ciated with the names of such masters as Ziemssen and Leube. This older method still retains its hold 011 the practitioner both because it fulfils the seemingly rational indications to give an open wound rest and to substitute an efficient means of nourishing the patient while the normal food supplies are contra-indicated, but also because it cures if efficiently carried out avery large majority of the patients even if their symptoms are severe and accompanied by profuse hemorrhage and its resulting anemia. Description : Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1892, Vol. 103 Cruveilhier (anatomy of the Human Body, 1844, American reprint, p. 334) states that the form pretty nearly resembles that of an almond. No allusion is made to the existence of cavities, but a compound tonsil is said to result from the component follicles being collected into several distinct masses. John and Charles Bell (anatomy and Physiology of the Human Body, 1834, American reprint, p. 350) make no reference to the interior of the tonsil other than to state that on the surface of the organ a number of cells open like the mouths of veins; behind the lobes a gland is felt as if it were one solid body. A. Macalister (text-book of Human Anatomy, 1889, p. 596) describes the surface as depressed into one or more longitudinal slits, or else pitted into a series of rounded holes. Description : Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1879, Vol. 77 Children in the College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York. MY experience in extra-uterine pregnancy extends to fifteen cases; of these seven were tubal, two interstitial, and six abdominal. All those of the last variety I propose now to relate, hoping at a future time to give an account of the instances of the first two forms which I have seen. For the physiologist and pathologist many varieties of extra-uterine pregnancy exist which do not exist for the practitioner at the bedside. For him the ovarian, tubo-ovarian, tube-abdominal, and other varieties are niceties beyond the appreciation of diagnosis, and he is forced to limit himself, as far as practice is concerned, to the classification of all varieties into, lst tubal, 2d interstitial, and 3d abdominal pregnancies. These, by rational and physical signs, he may differentiate from each other, and in certain cases base the propriety of surgical interference upon his conclu sion. Description : Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, Vol. 89: January, 1885-April, 1885 The weight of experimental evidence seems to the writer to favor the view that the specific properties of Koch's bacillus depend upon its ability to locate itself in certain situations, rather than in any power to produce a special kind of inflammation, giving rise to products having specific characters. If this is the case, we should expect that other organisms capable of locating themselves in the same situations would likewise give rise to tubercular neoplasms. In a recent communication to the French Academy of Sciences, we have evidence presented that such is the case. Description : Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1907, Vol. 134 As the threading of these very fine needles is difficult, the double arming of the silk may be avoided by a slight modification of the procedure, which we have used of late. A single needle, threaded, is passed from the under surface of the spleen upward into the apex of the transplantation hole, made in the manner described; then, impaling a parathyroid, it is carried back into the hole from which it has just emerged and thence through to the under surface of the spleen a few millimeters from its point of entrance. Description : Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1860, Vol. 39 The history of medicine affords ample evidence that the Opinions of physicians, in past ages, were subject to numerous and extensive changes, constituting complete revolutions. The want of a scientific basis enabled the bold or ingenious innovator to supplant the received Opinions of the day, and to substitute a new for an old error. But these revolutions are of ancient date. Modern medicine admits of improvement, but not revo lutionary changes. In the present, or scientific age, we distinguish between isolated facts, and a connected series of events. The former are accidental and often deceptive; the latter, duly classified and arranged, embrace the entire series of facts and events bearing on the subject, and therefore con stitute a science. The shepherd of Melampus could prescribe steel and wine for impotence, or hellebore for phrenzy, without any scientific know ledge of the nature of the disease, or the action of the remedies. And even Hippocrates, by his remarkable powers of observation, was often capable of forming an accurate prognosis, while he possessed but little knowledge of anatomical structures or pathological changes. Description : Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1902, Vol. 123 She was in such a miserable condition that I really thought that it would have been better for her if she had not survived. Two months later she re-entered the hospital, and I Operated for repair of the fistula. It was found that the uretero-vesical anastomosis on the left side had been entirely successful. Fortunately, the end of the right ureter had become adherent at the edge of the fistula. A probe was introduced into it, and it was dissected off with the vesical mucosa, and thus turned into the bladder. The edges of the fistula were then split so that the everted mucosa could be rolled in ward. The vaginal edge was denuded, the cervix uteri being utilized to fill in the upper part Of the gap. Sutures were introduced in the usual manner, parallel with the long axis of the vagina, care being exercised not to include the end of the ureter. A catheter was left in situ for three days, and the patient subsequently passed her urine every four hours, retaining from four to six ounces. On the sixth day the nurse allowed her to go all night, so that twelve ounces accumulated in the bladder, with the inevitable result. A small fistula developed, which was easily closed a fortnight later. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Description : Excerpt from The American Journal of the Medical Sciences, 1878, Vol. 75 IN the Rocky Mountain region of this country there prevails a fever to which the cox populi' has attached the name of mountain fever. Igno rance of the nature of disease has no doubt fitted this name 011 many a case to which a little medical knowledge would have applied a more specific title. The writer, for instance, has been called to a case of mountain fever which proved, on examination, to be one of pneumonia. Such mistakes are natural. But, within narrower limits, this looseness of diagnosis is not confined to the non-professional mind. W'hether we have an endemic disease in these mountain regions, separate and distinct from the diseased conditions which are recognized by the profession elsewhere, is a question which many a practitioner, who has seen mountain fever, would hesitate before answering. The first object of this paper will be to attempt a set tlement of this point. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
