Description : Excerpt from The American Naturalist, 1914, Vol. 48: A Monthly Journal Devoted to the Advancement of the Biological Sciences, With Special Reference to the Factors of Evolution According to Shamel, the first hybrid generation Of this cross developed somewhat more vigorously than the parent types and was uniform in its habit Of growth. The second generation, he thought, was hardly more vari able than the first. Several F3 families, the progeny Of inbred F2 individuals, were grown in 1906 and proved to be a variable lot. One Of these plants produced 26 small, round-pointed leaves with short internodes between them. This plant was thought by Mr. E. Halladay, upon whose farm the experiment was conducted, and Mr. J. B. Stewart, Of the U. S. Department Of Agriculture, to be worth sav ing from its promise Of producing a desirable commercial type. Description : Excerpt from The American Naturalist, Vol. 54: A Monthly Journal Devoted to the Advancement of the Biological Sciences, With Special Reference to the Factors of Evolution; January-February, 1920 IT is the purpose of this paper to set forth some facts regarding human mortality which appear to lead with great clarity to certain evolutionary generalizations of interest to the biologist, which have hitherto been over looked so far as I am aware. The present fashion in the study of evolution is towards the analytical discussion of the factors. Synthetic general discussions of broad phases of organic evolution, which occupied so prominent a place in early post-darwinian times, are now but rarely found in biological literature. This may fairly be re garded as a blessing, but perhaps not an entirely un mitigated one. While much of the general discussion Of evolution Of the period Of fifty years ago was utter non sense, still a View of some of the aspects of the forest may be at least occasionally stimulating, and particularly in these present days when we are accumulating such a mass of precise data about the characteristics Of the trees. Description : Excerpt from The American Naturalist, Vol. 55: A Bi-Monthly Journal Devoted to the Advancement of the Biological Sciences, With Special Reference to the Factors of Evolution; January-February 1921 The later developments of Mendelian analysis have been in the main an attempt to elucidate the scope and nature of segregation. Mendel proved the existence of characters determined by integral or unit factors. Their integrity is maintained by segregation, the capacity, namely, to separate unimpaired after combination with their opposites. Our first aim has been to discover spe cifically what characters behave in this way, Whether there is any limit to the scope Of segregation, Or any characters or classes of characters which are determined by elements unable to segregate simply. The second Oh jcet has been to decide the time and place in the various life-cycles at which segregation occurs. It is with the latter problem that I propose to deal more particularly in this lecture, but a brief consideration of the range of characters, subject to segregation, is appropriate. Description : Excerpt from The American Naturalist, 1882, Vol. 16: An Illustrated Magazine of Natural History The most important and interesting peculiarity of this species indicates a more advanced stage of adaptation to a subterranean life than that of its congeners. On all the surfaces of the head appear short rows of peculiar tubercles, relatively wider than the papillae of Amblyopsis, but also apparently shorter. They are much the largest about the anterior nostril and on the lower jaw, and are larger on the side of the head than on its upper surface. Description : Excerpt from The American Naturalist, 1908, Vol. 42: A Monthly Journal Devoted to the Advancement of the Biological Sciences, With Special References to the Factors of Evolution There is some indication that the delay in the forma tion of the new leg in the frog is due to conditions exist ing in the bones or muscles and, as I have pointed out,1 it is significant to find that in the vertebrates the loss of power to regenerate a limb appears where cartilage has been changed to bone. The result is not however due directly to the ossification, since the new material is derived from the periosteum and not from differentiated tissue. Description : The naturalist tradition in American fiction was a product of the tremendous changes wrought in late nineteenth-century America by the development of science and technology and by the intellectual upheavals associated with the ideas of Darwin, Marx, Nietzsche, and Freud. This book is an account of naturalism, perhaps the strongest and most influential intellectual tradition or, as Harold Kaplan would argue, mythology to affect modern American literature and culture.Kaplan approaches the naturalist writers through a study of Henry Adams. He sees in Adams the paradigmatic intelligence of his time a prophetic mind, though not a seminal one and a man absorbed with the twin notions of power and order. Adams's major work illustrates the joining of a literary imagination and moral temperament with an almost obsessive response to the science, economic life, and politics of his world. Adams's work exemplifies what Kaplan calls the myth of metapolitics a view of human struggle and fate profoundly dominated by naturalist concepts of power.Kaplan then turns to the fascination that power in its various manifestations material, moral, social, political held for writers such as Dreiser, Norris, Crane, and others. Their dramatic plots, characters, and allegorical images are examined in detail. In wider reference, this book should concern those who are interested in problems of modern ethics and politics in the effort to harmonize concepts of value with images of power and natural order.
