Description : James spent nearly a year on his American tour from August, 1904 to July, 1905. He travelled the entire country and even made decent money from public lectures, usually to ladies' organizations that he made "pay me through the nose." The American Scene covers his trips up and down the Eastern seaboard, concentrating on New York City and New England. A second volume, which was to recount his experiences in the Midwest and West, never got written.

The first book publication was in 1907, and there were significant differences between the American and the English versions of the book. Without question the most controversial and critically discussed of James' travel books, The American Scene sharply attacked what James saw as the rampant materialism and frayed social structure of turn-of-the-century America. The book has generated controversy for its treatment of various ethnic groups and political issues. The book still has relevance to such current topics as immigration policy, environmental protection, economic growth, and racial tensions.

Description : A 2018 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title A study of the philosophical, intellectual, and political influences on the artistic creations of Fitzgerald and key early American modernist writers F. Scott Fitzgerald and the American Scene continues Ronald Berman’s lifelong study of the philosophical, intellectual, and political influences on the artistic creations of key early American modernist writers. Each chapter in this volume elaborates on a crucial aspect of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s depiction of American society, specifically through the lens of the social sciences that most influenced his writing and thinking. Berman addresses, among other subjects, Fitzgerald’s use of philosophy, cultural analyses, and sociology—all enriched by the insights of his own experience living an American life. He was especially interested in how life had changed from 1910 to 1920. Many Americans were unable to navigate between the 1920s and their own memories of a very different world before the Great War; especially Daisy Buchanan who evolves from girlhood (as typified in sentimental novels of the time) to wifehood (as actually experienced in the new decade). There is a profound similarity between what happens to Fitzgerald’s characters and what happened to the nation. Berman revisits classics like The Great Gatsby but also looks carefully at Fitzgerald’s shorter fictions, analyzing a stimulating spectrum of scholars from more contemporary critics like Thomas Piketty to George Santayana, John Maynard Keynes, John Dewey, and Walter Lippmann. This fascinating addition to F. Scott Fitzgerald scholarship, although broad in its content, is accessible to a wide audience. Scholars and students of Fitzgerald and twentieth-century American literature, as well as dedicated Fitzgerald readers, will enjoy Berman’s take on a long-debated and celebrated author.

Description : The American Scene considers major texts of nineteenth century American literature: The Leatherstocking Tales, Poe's fiction, The Scarlet Letter, Moby-Dick, Leaves of Grass, Dickinson's poetry, Huckleberry Finn, James's The American Scene. It sees these works as attempts to articulate relationships between the self and the New World. The indeterminacy of the relationships is expressed in the formal instability of the works themselves. In these respects, nineteenth century American literature is shown to offer a striking contrast to comparable English literature.

Description : South American Scenes is the story of a four month journey that illuminates not only the joys and difficulties of travel, but the rich histories and current affairs of the continent. From Sao Paolo down to Punta Arenas and back up to Cusco with an interlude on Easter Island, this is an in depth look at a continent through the eyes of a traveler motivated by the excitement and liberty of the open road combined with the desire to make a journey last beyond its completion. Rittenberg' s account of his travels in South America makes use of his first hand experiences as a springboard into the culture and history of the continent. He is eager to relate the present to the past and find something of the past that one would not necessarily assume relates to the present in the hope of bringing clarity to a place once foreign to him. He writes in a vivid style not only with the aim of enabling the reader to see what he has seen but in order to make them feel they are also on a journey discovering new cultures and other states of mind.Along the way he encounters preachers, protestors, glaciers, the spirit of poets, the ruins of an empire, the relics of a civilization, an ever changing landscape and an abundance of solitude that enables him to come home with a clear picture of a continent that for so long had fueled his curiosity.

Description : The drama of The American Scene is in this conflict between James and his material. To establish a sense of coherence, he applies his preconceived aesthetic values to the scene, testing them against his impressions. Using a series of assumptions culled from experience as his starting point, he evaluates their applicability to details in the American landscape. If they appear to be inapplicable, he searches for the sources of discontinuity, and tries to find the aesthetic standards that do apply. Out of the vast array of individual impressions, treated in this manner, James hopes to elicit the connections and generalizations that can lead to a comprehensive interpretation of the American scene. - from the Introduction.

Description : Although the so-called "American Scene" movement dominated American art during the second quarter of the twentieth century, it has been largely forgotten today, eclipsed by emergence of abstract expressionism and the development of other avant garde art movements which gained prominence in America by mid-century. Today, however, even as the Depression-era generation fades from the scene, its art lives on. The quality, energy and visual impact of this art is abundantly apparent from even a cursory perusal of the masterworks described and reproduced in this catalogue of a private collection of American representational art of the Thirties and Forties. Painting the American Scene: American Art of the Thirties and Forties offers an extraordinary glimpse into the lives and work of twenty-nine American painters whose art was highly acclaimed and widely exhibited during their lifetimes and for whom proper recognition is long overdue.

Description : This early work by Henry James was originally published in 1907 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'The American Scene' is a work detailing the travelling experiences of the author on a trip across the United States in 1904-1905. James published his first story, 'A Tragedy of Error', in the Continental Monthly in 1864, when he was twenty years old. In 1876, he emigrated to London, where he remained for the vast majority of the rest of his life, becoming a British citizen in 1915. From this point on, he was a hugely prolific author, eventually producing twenty novels and more than a hundred short stories and novellas, as well as literary criticism, plays and travelogues.
