Description : Many homes across America have designs based on plans taken from pattern books or mail-order catalogs. In Houses from Books, Daniel D. Reiff traces the history of published plans and offers the first comprehensive survey of their influence on the structure and the style of American houses from 1738 to 1950. Houses from Books shows that architectural publications, from Palladio&’s I Quattro Libri to Aladdin's Readi-Cut Homes, played a decisive role in every aspect of American domestic building. Reiff discusses the people and the firms who produced the books as well as the ways in which builders and architects adapted the designs in communities throughout the country. His book also offers a wide-ranging analysis of the economic and social conditions shaping American building practices. As architectural publication developed and grew more sophisticated, it played an increasingly prominent part in the design and the construction of domestic buildings. In villages and small towns, which often did not have professional architects, the publications became basic resources for carpenters and builders at all levels of expertise. Through the use of published designs, they were able to choose among a variety of plans, styles, and individual motifs and engage in a fruitful dialogue with past and present architects. Houses from Books reconstructs this dialogue by examining the links between the published designs and the houses themselves. Reiff&’s book will be indispensable to architectural historians, architects, preservationists, and regional historians. Realtors and homeowners will also find it of great interest. A catalog at the end of the book can function as a guide for those attempting to locate a model and a date for a particular design. Houses from Books contains a wealth of photographs, many by the author, that enhance its importance as a history and guide.

Description : Excerpt from The California Architect and Building News, Vol. 16: January, 1895 The principle of the Bill, namely, the instituting a Com mission of high character to have charge of the architectural work of the Government, and to distribute the work amongst the most skillful architects in the country, is unquestionably a correct one. The Bill has received the approval of the Secretary of the Treasury. It has passed tue Committee on Public Build ings and Grounds, of the House, whose indorsement could not be stronger, and the Bill is now regularly before the House. Owing to its introduction at the end of the last ses sion of Congress, at a time when the House was entirely absorbed by the Tariff revision, it was impossible to have a day set for its consideration and passage; therefore it had to go over to the present session of Congress. Description : Excerpt from The American Architect and Building News, Vol. 18: July-December, 1885 I have dwelt thus long upon the delays which are liable to occur in the execution of architectural designs in terracotta, and the man ner in which they can be avoided, for the reason that such delays or the apprehension that they will occur often militate seriously against the employment of the material. Description : Viewed this way, Richardson becomes a more challenging figure - an architect who in many ways was shaped by and was consistent with his era, even as he dominated it. In addition to shedding new light on the architect, the book shows how much Richardson scholarship has changed and matured over the course of a century."--BOOK JACKET.

Description : Excerpt from The American Architect and Building News, Vol. 5: January June, 1879 All art up to the beginning of the sixteenth century was decora tive art, and even up to the present day many of the greatest efforts of art have been truly decorative. But with the growing skill of the artists in mastering the technical difficulties of their craft, the tendency developed of making paintings and sculptures with less and less regard to the relations they were to bear to objects around them and to balanced distribution of color, until now, the commonly accepted idea of a painting or piece of sculpture is an object bearing no relation whatever, either in sentiment, color, or form, to any of its surroundings, and in the case of paintings separated from its sur roundings by the strongest imaginable barrier, - a heavy mass of gilded frame. The artists and the public together have gradually wrought this change, and architecture, sculpture, and painting, instead of work ing hand in hand, as they once did. In the realization of ideas that glorified them, all have come to live separate existences, seriously to the detriment of them all.
