Description : How do our social, political and religious commitments influence our interpretation of biblical texts? Are obedience and suspicion necessarily opposite ways to respond to the authority of the Bible? Can one criticize and be transformed at the same time? Lydia Neufeld Harder explores these questions from the vantage point of a scholar, a feminist and a member of a faith community. A hermeneutics of obedience, rising out of the Mennonite theological tradition, and a hermeneutics of suspicion, advocated by many feminist theologians, seem to represent opposite approaches to the Bible’s authority. The resulting polarization could easily have led to static definitions of authority and the subtle domination of those who differ from the majority. However, by focusing on the common theological concept of discipleship, Harder has constructed a critical dialogue, beginning a process of creative change in her own view of authority. This new view opens the way for an interpretation of the Gospel of Mark. A new appreciation of both the power and the vulnerability of the biblical text leads to a view of authority that embraces both suspicion and obedience in a dynamic interpretative process.

Description : ÊAmong the many topics addressed by the Second Vatican Council was the need for the renewal of religious life. Some forty years later, many religious orders of women are dying out, begging the question: Did the reforms of Vatican II help the religious orders become more fruitful, or did they plant the seeds of destruction? In writing this work, Mother Mary Francis, P.C.C., carefully and prayerfully examined the decree on religious life promulgated by the Council Fathers and uncovered its noble meaning and purpose. With her penetrating eye and thoughtful reflection, Mother goes to the heart of the document,ÊPerfectae Caritatis,Êand finds there the calling to pursue perfect loveÑthough chastity, poverty and obedienceÑthat Christ himself extends to those disciples who would follow him more closely. This book is a timely volume on this important topic for religious life in the Church. For Catholics who want to discover how the religious life can be restored, this is a fine place to start.

Description : Jackson Carter just wants a normal life. Sure, at thirteen, he's just retired from an illustrious career as a classical musician and entered Harvard as a freshman mathematics major. And yeah, he's responsible for raising his two younger brothers while mom is off in Brazil or Thailand spending every last dime they have. But he'd still just like a couple of friends to hang out with and maybe even a girlfriend. But a normal life just isn't Jackson's destiny. He has become obsessed with patterns: the mathematical properties found in the formation of clouds, the outline of a mustard stain on a picnic table, the intricate working of light and dark found in a curtain at the Sydney Opera House. When his mathematics instructor shows him a fractal image, Jackson becomes so engrossed that he cannot look away. Then someone hammers a pre-Roman curse to his front door summoning an angry demon, and his littlest brother starts receiving messages from Eddie Cochran, the dead Rockabilly singer. And, of course, there are the corporate paramilitary units stalking the parking lots of Harvard, his other brother's hysterical blindness, and a demented ex-weatherman from Little Rock, Arkansas who thinks Jackson is an evil genius who needs a good ass-kicking. And, oh yeah, everyone seems to think Jackson may be the anti-Christ. So much for a normal life. An Angel of Obedience is the sometimes funny, sometimes scary, always exciting tale of Jackson Carter, boy genius, over-burdened older brother, and potential destroyer of the known universe. It's a story that just goes to prove that when time and space are on the brink of extinction, that's when you need your friends and family the most.

Description : A sixth-century abbot who wrote a practical rule for his community and a twentieth-century thinker who has roamed through literature, cultural anthropology, and religious thought-what would these two men have in common to generate a conversation between them? The religious study Tools for Peace: The Spiritual Craft of St. Benedict and René Girard combines their insights on how to understand and overcome violence in the world today. In his Rule for monks, St. Benedict explored ways that people can live in peace with one another and with God. René Girard probed human experience to seek the roots of violence that tears human communities apart and separates people from God. A dialogue between this abbot and this modern thinker across fifteen centuries deepens the insights of both into the causes and cures of human violence and gives us the tools to apply their ideas in our troubled world. For both St. Benedict and Girard, peace is rooted in God. Anyone who yearns for harmony in the midst of the violence that surrounds us today can learn much from Tools for Peace, essentially joining in a conversation between two people who share a desire for the serenity of God for all times.
