Quicklet on The Art of War by Sun Tzu Book Excerpt:

Quicklets: Learn more. Read less. The Art of War is book that has been read and studied by many people for over two millenia. It is one of the books included in the Seven Military Classics of China, a compilation of military treatises complied in the 11th century. It has been widely read and studied in China ever since its initial publication. The book eventually spread to other countries and is now a worldwide classic. To note one example, The Art of War is one of the books included on the Marine Corps' Recommended Reading List. The first western translation of The Art of War was published by a Jesuit named Joseph Amiot, who translated it to French in 1782. In 1905, British Captain E.F. Calthrop translated the book into English. Sinologist Lionel Giles published a new English translation in 1910 after criticizing the accuracy of Calthrop's translation. Another English translation was published by Marine Corps Brigadier General Samuel B. Griffith. Starting around the late 20th century, people began studying The Art of War in contexts other than pure military strategy. The most notable example of this is the application of the book's principles to business. Some have even published special editions of the book intended specifically for business people including The Art of War for Executives, Sun Tzu and the Art of Business and Sun Tzu Strategies for Winning the Marketing War.

The Art of War outlines the steps for outwitting the enemy, be it an army of 10,000 or an unresponsive client. The Art of War teaches leaders strategies to attain victory by: Knowing when to stand up to an opponent, and when to back down. How to be confident without being overly confident. Considering the cost of the campaign before launching an attack. Avoiding an opponent's strengths and striking his weaknesses. "The one who is first to the field of battle has time to rest, while his opponent rushes into the conflict weary and confused. The first will be fresh and alert. The second will waste most of his energy trying to catch up." Be the first to the battlefield with The Art of War.

Mastering the Art of War Book Excerpt:

Two master strategists delve into the essential priciples of Sun Tzu's The Art of War, revealing what they teach us about leadership, success, and more Composed by two prominent statesmen-generals of classical China, this book develops the strategies of Sun Tzu's classic, The Art of War, into a complete handbook of organization and leadership. The great leaders of ancient China who were trained in Sun Tzu's principles understood how war is waged successfully—both materially and mentally—and how victory and defeat follow clear social, psychological, and environmental laws. Drawing on episodes from the panorama of Chinese history, Mastering the Art of War presents practical summaries of these essential laws along with tales of conflict and strategy that show in concrete terms the proper use of Sun Tzu's principles. The book also examines the social and psychological aspects of organization and crisis management. The translator's introduction surveys the Chinese philosophies of war and conflict and explores in depth the parallels between The Art of War and the oldest handbook of strategic living, the I Ching (Book of Changes).

Perhaps the life you dream of is one in which you’ve written a book, directed a movie, or pursued a creative passion. What’s stopping you from getting there? After all, it’s not the writing or directing part that’s hard. The hard part is sitting down to write. According to Steven Pressfield, the thing keeping you from your dream is Resistance. Anthologie Mondiale de la Strat gie Anglais Book Excerpt:

This engrossing anthology gathers together a remarkable collection of writings on the use of strategy in war. Gérard Chaliand has ranged over the whole of human history in assembling this collection—the result is an integration of the annals of military thought that provides a learned framework for understanding global political history. Included are writings from ancient and modern Europe, China, Byzantium, the Arab world, Persia, and the Ottoman Empire. Alongside well-known militarists such as Julius Caesar, Napoleon, Walter Raleigh, Rommel, and many others are "irregulars" such as Cortés, Lawrence of Arabia, and even Gandhi. Contrary to standard interpretations stressing competition between land and sea powers, or among rival Christian societies, Chaliand shows the great importance of the struggles between nomadic and sedentary peoples, and of the conflicts between Christianity and Islam. With the invention of firepower, a relatively recent occurrence in the history of warfare, modes of organization and strategic concepts—elements reflecting the nature of a society—have been key to how war is waged. Unparalleled in its breadth, this anthology will become the standard work for understanding a fundamental part of human history—the conduct of war. "This anthology is not only an unparalleled corpus of information and an aid to failing memory; it is also and above all a reliable and liberating guide for research. . . . Ranging "from the origins to the nuclear age," it compels us to widen our narrow perspectives on conflicts and strategic action and open ourselves up to the universal."—from the Foreword

On Tactics Book Excerpt:

On Tactics is intended to be the remedy to the chaotic and thus far unformed realm of tactical theory and to answer questions like the one above. Part One of the book will establish a tactical system meant to replace the Principles of War checklist. First, the contextual role of tactics with regards to strategy and war will be established. This will necessarily lean on major strategic theories in order to illuminate the role of tactics. This section will be formed around the Physical, Mental, and Moral planes of battlefield interaction used by theorists such as J.F.C Fuller and John Boyd. Each plane will then be examined in turn, and many of the classic Principles of War will be discussed along with some new ones. It will present some standard methods that tacticians can use to gain an advantage on the battlefield using historical examples that illustrate each concept. These “tactical tenants” include maneuver, mass, firepower, tempo, surprise, deception, confusion, shock, and the role of the moral aspects of combat. Finally, Part One will circle back around by discussing the role of tactical victory- once achieved- in contributed to a strategy. Part One is short by design. It is intended to be both compelling and easily mastered for junior non-commissioned officers and company grade officers, while still rich enough to be interesting to both specialist and non-specialist academics. It is a book meant not just for bookshelves but also for ruck sacks and cargo pockets. Part Two will build on Part One by exploring concepts with which the tactician must be familiar with such as the culminating point of victory, mission tactics and decentralized command and control, offensive and defensive operations, and the initiative. Part Three will conclude the book examining implications of the presented tactical systems to a variety of other issues in strategic studies.

The Utility of Force Book Excerpt:

UPDATED WITH TWO NEW CHAPTERS 'One of the most provocative and startling books ever written by a British commander ... an update of the two great thinkers on war and peace, Clausewitz and Sun Tsu, for our time ... it is for anyone interested in the well-being of our world' Robert Fox, Evening Standard Why do we try to use military force to solve our political problems? And why, when our forces win the military battles does this still fail to solve those problems? It is because the force lacks utility. From Iraq to the Balkans, and from Afghanistan to Chechneya, over the past fifteen years there has been a steady stream of military interventions that have not delivered on their promise for peace, or even political resolution. The Utility of Force explains this anomaly at the heart of our current international system. 'Britain's outstanding soldier of modern times ... a book that will assure his reputation as a serious and original thinker among soldiers and strategists' Sir John Keegan, Daily Telegraph 'It is hard to overstate the devastating nature of this book as an indictment of almost everything the West has done in recent years, and is doing today' Sir Max Hastings, Sunday Telegraph
