Description : She was too busy to keep a diary. Luckily, AmEx kept one for her. From comedian Amy Borkowsky comes a hilarious collection about how she-quite literally-spent her early years as a single career woman. After digging out several dust-covered boxes from the back of her closet, Amy discovered twelve years' worth of credit card statements, documenting, in their own way, every significant event in her life. They show that on July 12, 1993, Amy spent $189.12 at Victoria's Secret, and that on July 14 she returned the entire purchase-evidence of a relationship that suddenly unraveled, right before The Lingerie Phase. The $601.76 she spent at Ann Taylor reminds her of her quest to find a suit that would cover not only her torso but also her career-related insecurities, and a $30.25 charge for her first Caller ID box recalls her first fruitless attempts to block out her interfering mother. Every purchase tells a story, and this wickedly funny account relates Amy's search for what every young woman is really shopping for in life: love, success, and independence.

Description : Forests have been at the fault lines of contact between African peasant communities in the Tanzanian coastal hinterland and outsiders for almost two centuries. In recent decades, a global call for biodiversity preservation has been the main challenge to Tanzanians and their forests. Thaddeus Sunseri uses the lens of forest history to explore some of the most profound transformations in Tanzania from the nineteenth century to the present. He explores anticolonial rebellions, the world wars, the depression, the Cold War, oil shocks, and nationalism through their intersections with and impacts on Tanzania’s coastal forests and woodlands. In Wielding the Ax, forest history becomes a microcosm of the origins, nature, and demise of colonial rule in East Africa and of the first fitful decades of independence. Wielding the Ax is a story of changing constellations of power over forests, beginning with African chiefs and forest spirits, both known as “ax–wielders,” and ending with international conservation experts who wield scientific knowledge as a means to controlling forest access. The modern international concern over tropical deforestation cannot be understood without an awareness of the long–term history of these forest struggles.

Description : What horrors await you during the night, Which of your fears will come to light? When your subconscious merges your reality with dreams, Is it a sign of too much stress, or what is yet to be? The human psyche is one of our last frontiers; portents, dreams, and visions some say are a look into our possible future, while others it is a way for our subconscious to deal with the stressors of our day. What so you believe? This collection of two poems and a short story is a real event from my past, when a young girl's responsibilities may have been too much, or was it a future I prevented when I heeded my dream's warning? I'll leave it for you to decide.

Description : Sound of the Ax brings together for the first time over four hundred aphorisms and twenty-six aphoristic poems by one of America’s most essential poets of the twentieth century. Many readers are familiar with the trenchant nature of William Stafford’s poems, with lines such as “Justice will take us millions of intricate moves” and “Your job is to find what the world is trying to be,” but have never had the opportunity to read a sustained selection from the thousands of wise, witty, and penetrating statements he created in over forty years of daily writing in his journal. In keeping with Stafford’s varied interests, the aphorisms in Sound of the Ax explore many topics—war and peace, involvement, aging, appearances, fear, egotism, writing, nature, animals, suffering, faith, living an ethical life, and so on—with his incisive view. The poems are either made up entirely or primarily aphorisms, and range from the well-known “Things I Learned Last Week” to some never before collected. Readers will find much to enjoy and to think about here, and will return over and over to Sound of the Ax for inspiration, pleasure, and wisdom from an author noted for his integrity and mindful living.
