This is a detailed history of one of the most important and dramatic episodes in modern science, recounted from the novel vantage point of the dawn of the information age and its impact on representations of nature, heredity, and society. Drawing on archives, published sources, and interviews, the author situates work on the genetic code (1953-70) within the history of life science, the rise of communication technosciences (cybernetics, information theory, and computers), the intersection of molecular biology with cryptanalysis and linguistics, and the social history of postwar Europe and the United States. Kay draws out the historical specificity in the process by which the central biological problem of DNA-based protein synthesis came to be metaphorically represented as an information code and a writing technologyand consequently as a book of life. This molecular writing and reading is part of the cultural production of the Nuclear Age, its power amplified by the centuries-old theistic resonance of the book of life metaphor. Yet, as the author points out, these are just metaphors: analogies, not ontologies. Necessary and productive as they have been, they have their epistemological limitations. Deploying analyses of language, cryptology, and information theory, the author persuasively argues that, technically speaking, the genetic code is not a code, DNA is not a language, and the genome is not an information system (objections voiced by experts as early as the 1950s). Thus her historical reconstruction and analyses also serve as a critique of the new genomic biopower. Genomic textuality has become a fact of life, a metaphor literalized, she claims, as human genome projects promise new levels of control over life through the meta-level of information: control of the word (the DNA sequences) and its editing and rewriting. But the author shows how the humbling limits of these scriptural metaphors also pose a challenge to the textual and material mastery of the genomic book of life.

The Book of Life is a new rendering of one of the most influential transformational books in human history. Originally collected by the students of Epictetus, the most famous teacher of conscious living in turbulent first-century Rome, this book presents a brilliantly simple formula for resolving the most complex problems of psychological and spiritual growth. The bold goal of Epictetus's teachings is to give the seeker a reliable way to experience happiness amidst all the ups and downs of human existence. The essence of the book is contained in its first sentence and is echoed throughout: Misery comes from trying to control things that you are powerless to control, and happiness comes from correctly placing your attention on things you can control. Although there have been many versions of this master-work throughout the centuries, the current rendition aims for something new: an experiential, whole-person understanding so that the reader can feel as well as contemplate its wisdom. *Includes a meditative CD

Considered an expert about the Book of Enoch, Dr. Randy Delp has put together an analysis of this ancient book to explain why Jesus and the New Testament writers were not only influenced by the Book of Enoch, they quoted its contents, cited its texts and labeled it Scripture. The teachings of Enoch have influenced every major monotheistic religion including Islam, Judaism, Christianity and Zoroastrianism and vestiges can be found in Hinduism, and other ancient religions. The footprints of his teachings are seen throughout every generation and the finality of his message has yet to be fulfilled. Enochs influence in astronomy, history, religion, education, and para-psychology has forged how society thinks today. It is significant to note that the prophet named Enoch, who was born seven generations after Adam and Eve, may be the only person in history who has had a positive effect on every major and minor religion, while nothing negative is ever spoken about him.

This study offers an incisive new reading of the romantic playwright Thomas Lovell (1803-1849) Beddoes's work as shaped by the contemporary discourses of radical politics, life science, and gender. Reappraising his opus magnum Death's Jest Book in a context powerfully defined by both English and German romantic culture, this study unveils Beddoes's complex vision of history before the backdrop of the writer's fascination both with Early Modern culture and with proto-modernist forms of aesthetic experimentation.
