The Elephant in the Room Book Excerpt:

The Elephant In The Room A financial fable filled with lessons for building long-term wealth "What most people don't understand, and what usually turns out to be the elephant in the room, is their behavior. It affects everything in your life, including the way you earn, spend, and save." —Aunt Katherine Michael Davidson and his wife, Jennifer, knew what they wanted from life and had some pretty good financial habits, but they were far from prepared for the future. Despite a healthy income and successful career, Michael—who's facing down thirty, with a wife who also works, and two kids—can't seem to accumulate any savings, and the family continues to live from paycheck to paycheck. Frustrated by his situation, Michael seeks the advice of a person who, in his eyes, has found a way to overcome this challenge—his now comfortably retired Aunt Katherine. What follows is a series of conversations in which Michael discovers that some fundamental concepts, all under his control, can put his family in a better financial position. Engaging and informative, The Elephant in the Room follows the fictional weekly meetings—based on the real-world experiences of financial advisors and employees from First Command Financial Planning—between Michael and Aunt Katherine as they discuss the elements that guide their financial behavior and prepare a plan to achieve his family's financial objectives. A refreshing look at what it really takes to secure your financial future, The Elephant in the Room contains insights and advice that will put you on the path to prosperity.

The Elephant in the Room Book Excerpt:

ONE OF NPR’S BEST BOOKS OF 2019 A “warm and funny and honest…genuinely unputdownable” (Curtis Sittenfeld) memoir chronicling what it’s like to live in today’s world as a fat man, from acclaimed journalist Tommy Tomlinson, who, as he neared the age of fifty, weighed 460 pounds and decided he had to change his life. When he was almost fifty years old, Tommy Tomlinson weighed an astonishing—and dangerous—460 pounds, at risk for heart disease, diabetes, and stroke, unable to climb a flight of stairs without having to catch his breath, or travel on an airplane without buying two seats. Raised in a family that loved food, he had been aware of the problem for years, seeing doctors and trying diets from the time he was a preteen. But nothing worked, and every time he tried to make a change, it didn’t go the way he planned—in fact, he wasn’t sure that he really wanted to change. In The Elephant in the Room, Tomlinson chronicles his lifelong battle with weight in a voice that combines the urgency of Roxane Gay’s Hunger with the intimacy of Rick Bragg’s All Over but the Shoutin’. He also hits the road to meet other members of the plus-sized tribe in an attempt to understand how, as a nation, we got to this point. From buying a Fitbit and setting exercise goals to contemplating the Heart Attack Grill in Las Vegas, America’s “capital of food porn,” and modifying his own diet, Tomlinson brings us along on a candid and sometimes brutal look at the everyday experience of being constantly aware of your size. Over the course of the book, he confronts these issues head-on and chronicles the practical steps he has to take to lose weight by the end. “What could have been a wallow in memoir self-pity is raised to art by Tomlinson’s wit and prose” (Rolling Stone). Affecting and searingly honest, The Elephant in the Room is an “inspirational” (The New York Times) memoir that will resonate with anyone who has grappled with addiction, shame, or self-consciousness. “Add this to your reading list ASAP” (Charlotte Magazine).

The Elephant in the Room Book Excerpt:

I write this book to do something that most would consider unwise as a current employee of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. I call or appeal for systematic change--change in policies that have kept the financial support from tithe and other sources to Adventist elementary and other sources to Adventist schools at minimal. Please don't think of me as a brave one who dares to go where many have not gone before. I am not... I speak out because we need policy changes at every level."Fairness is not giving everyone the same thing but to give each person what he or she needs to succeed."Many businesses are rethinking how to move forward post the pandemic. We, too, as a church, need to do the same.In the Old Testament, God instructed his people to pass on their faith to their children by intentionally teaching them God's statutes and commandments (Deuteronomy 6:4-8 and Isaiah 54:13). Similarly, the Christian Church receives its marching orders from Jesus in the Great Commission found in Matthew 28:16-20. Jesus directs the church to make disciples of all nations by baptizing and teaching. Church schools are needed to partner with parents and the church as a whole to educate children.Ellen G. White, cofounder of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, who earlier encouraged the Seventh-day Church to focus on foreign missions, stated--in addressing church schools in the book Testimonies for the Church, volume 6--that the children are not to be neglected. She writes, "We cannot call ourselves true missionaries if we neglect those at our very doors who are at the most critical age and who need our aid to secure knowledge and experience that will fit them for the service of God." Her solution to financing church schools is simple: "Let all share the expense."Enrollment in Christian elementary and secondary schools have been dropping nationwide. Many families in North America, especially new immigrant families, are not able to afford the tuition to send their children to church schools. Several church schools have closed. In this book, Dr. Sadrail Saint-Ulysse, an ordained minister and educator of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, addresses the challenges of operating Christian schools at the elementary and secondary levels after serving for nearly twenty-five years as a pastor and educator, with the hope that the burden of operating church schools can be shared by the entire church--local, state, national, and worldwide--to alleviate this burden. The book challenges parents, teachers, principals, school boards, church members, and church leaders at every level to make the needed policy changes to ensure that church schools are financed in a sustainable manner.

The Elephant in the Room Book Excerpt:

Adam Barthold is a deeply flawed man haunted by the mysterious Arahm Tuit. He travels from upstate New York to the hills of Ash Fork, Arizona where he hopes to start a new life but instead finds love, danger and watches the world come tumbling down in red ruin, little knowing he has an important part to play in the future of human kind. Although this is an apocalyptic story, you will find NO zombies, alien invaders, government conspiracies, universal plagues or any other such nonsense. It addresses what is a more imminent threat to humankind. Further, it is told from a very limited point of view as experienced by the principal character, Adam Barthold. Unlike some such story lines, the book focuses more on the characters, their flaws, fortitude and family-like relationships. It is both a love story and a story of deep friendships often crossing over racial, age and cultural boundaries. The action scenes are not stereotype Hollywood-hyped depictions either.

This book describes some of the psychological and physical aspects of pregnancy and parenthood that the other books about what to expect missed out on. I am writing to the women who have gotten pregnant unplanned, have been raped, or find themselves as teen moms--or in any other circumstances, even planned pregnancies. This book has helpful tips on parenting, maintaining your health, and dealing with issues encountered during pregnancy and parenting for the entire family. It covers the psychological aspect of what is okay to feel or not to feel during pregnancy and parenthood, the realization of loss of oneself as a person, and what to expect and deal with the first year of parenthood. There are also helpful tips for dads to understand what the mom is going through as well as guidelines to have a functioning household once the baby arrives, including what you really need for the baby and the hospital, how much babies cost, and vaccination and alternative medicines. More information on this and other important parenting matters is available on the author's blog at www.mommysknowledge.com.

Human Breeding The Elephant in the Room Book Excerpt:

I believe psychologists and psychiatrists are barking up the wrong tree. We do not suffer from psychological problems or mental problems directly, but we do suffer from emotional problems. It is now accepted that we are born with most, if not all, our emotions fixed. Therefore our emotional state must be hereditary, some good and some not so good. But we must not blame our parents because they have been burdened also. the way we are reared will affect the strength of these emotions. I believe that people with 'psychological' problems could recover much quicker if this theory is explained to them.

The Elephant In The Room A Poet s Journal VII Book Excerpt:

In many ways we all struggle with the need to be heard. Come 2018, my poetry's one of those ways for people to hear me out. It's a way to make sure I'm making sense of everything. A way to hear myself. Society and politics haven't changed. However, my views on public scrutiny, and ostracization, have. Your mental health, your sanity, is harder to keep now than ever. It's as if you have to walk on eggshells with your words. The fear of offending someone gets greater every day. This year, part of me let this fear go. I said what I needed to say, in a hopefully non-offensive way. So I keep talking (writing) in hopes that someone may hear (read) something that helps. These journals are a way for you to hear what's said to myself in my head. An example of how I cope with my illness. My hopeful path to better self-esteem, confidence, break-downs, and build-ups. I hope you enjoy the journey!

The Elephant in the Room The Denial of the Unconscious Mind Book Excerpt:

“The deep psychodynamic digging of ALPER reaches to celebrated experiments, death in the afterlife, the mind, the interface of science and religion, and cosmos-centric issues. Readers are enriched greatly by the intellectual treasures unearthed toilsomely by the spade of psychodynamic excavator ALPER.” —LEO UZYCH, JD, MPH “ALPER never writes dull books. He has one of the most creative analytic minds of his generation.” —DR. JEROME DAVID LEVIN, author of The Clinton Syndrome Within these pages GERALD ALPER explores the pervasive propensity among leading scientists in their quests for quantification and reductionism to overlook completely the presence of the “Elephant in the Room”—the dynamic unconscious—and the very real consequences that result when science minimizes the human equation. Offering a holistic, contextual view of the mind and its manifestations that neither excludes nor privileges the methods of science, ALPER examines the conclusions drawn by the experimentalist by taking the laboratory and putting it back into the real world. In the process he illuminates the fallacies inherent in some of the most celebrated scientific experiments in modern times while convincingly asserting that the experiential and existential aspects of our everyday lives are no less relevant.

A systematic look at how relationships determine the success of leaders and their enterprises, along with tools to help strengthen and change them Since time immemorial, relationships have determined the fate of leaders. But today they are more critical to success than ever. No longer can leaders count on long time horizons or sloppy competition to make up for the inefficiencies that poor relationships create. Leaders must make decisions and take actions quickly and well with others, even those with whom they share very little?perhaps not even a time zone. This new world puts relationships at the center of what leaders must understand and master to succeed. Uses in-depth observational studies and clinical research to explore how relationships at the top of organizations work, develop, and change Shows how to understand, strengthen, and transform these relationships, so they can withstand the most intense pressures and conflicts This important book features a Foreword by Peter Senge, author of The Fifth Discipline.

Elephant in the Room Book Excerpt:

Elephant in the room! It is an eye-opening book for the people of the world, Africa, particularly Trophy Hunters, Organisations opposed to hunting, Government and Tourist. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Species Survival Commission (SSC), states that well-managed trophy hunting can provide both revenue and incentives for people to conserve and restore wild populations, maintain areas of land for conservation, and protect wildlife from poaching. The question is what you are saying about this, do you have the idea what it mean by trophy hunting. Elephant in the room: The book is about the wild animals that are in declining, the biggest threat to then. The report on elephants, rhino and lions on trophy hunting, reminds us that the problems wild animals’ faces are actually much broader and more damaging than most people realize. The biggest question is Can South Africa and Africa ban trophy hunting? Many peoples are saying trophy hunting is no longer necessary in a modern world. What is trophy hunting and who is hunting and why. Debates surrounding trophy hunting centrally concern not only the question of the morality of recreational hunting and supposed conservation efforts of big-game and ranch hunting, but also the observed decline in animal species that are targets for trophy hunting. How does trophy hunting compare to photographic tourism? And that South Africa had the largest hunting industry in terms of numbers of operators, visiting hunters, animals shot and revenues generated. Elephant at the other hand and for years, animal rights’ activists and anti-culling groups have pleaded for conservationists to use birth control methods to lower elephant population numbers rather than embarking on mass killings. In the past, elephant management decisions were largely based on carrying capacity. Lion bones, which can substitute for tiger bones, are used in East Asian countries including China as medicinal remedies said to treat a wide range of ailments from insomnia to osteoporosis. The other parts of lions such as whiskers, fat and tails have always had a traditional value and use in many African nations as medicines, talismans and components of ceremonial and ritual practices. Before the lion never had any traditional value in China, but it’s an analog to the tiger so it seems to be acceptable. Illegal trade remains difficult because, despite lions’ declining populations, there is actually still a legal trade in lion bones. The things that most of us do not know are that the demand of lion’s bones is growing every day. Customs officials that are trying to block illegal shipments of ivory or rhino horn have started to notice lion parts nestled inside the same containers. The conservation world started to become increasingly nervous about where the trade might be headed and what impact it would have on wild populations. As the price of bones is rising steadily, some breeders have started slaughtering their own lions, without obtaining a permit or getting a vet to put the animal to sleep, says a fraud inspector. The South African Department of Environmental Affairs has raised concerns that the demand for lion bones could potentially threaten South Africa’s 2,000 wild lions. On the other hand TB on the lions looks like malaria and know is killing more lions than before. Lions are thought to contract TB from infected prey species, especially buffalo, being exposed to the bacterium that causes the disease when they eat infected animals. Rhino No one could ever understand that your horn is for you, the details about the use of the rhino horn. And all the questions you may have about elephants, rhino, buffalo, leopard, hippo, cheetah and lions.

The Elephant in the Room Book Excerpt:

From the New York Times bestselling author of Counting by 7s comes a heartfelt story about "the importance of compassion and bravery when facing life’s challenges” (Kirkus) for fans of The One and Only Ivan and Front Desk. It's been almost a year since Sila's mother traveled halfway around the world to Turkey, hoping to secure the immigration paperwork that would allow her to return to her family in the United States. The long separation is almost impossible for Sila to withstand. But things change when Sila accompanies her father (who is a mechanic) outside their Oregon town to fix a truck. There, behind an enormous stone wall, she meets a grandfatherly man who only months before won the state lottery. Their new alliance leads to the rescue of a circus elephant named Veda, and then to a friendship with an unusual boy named Mateo, proving that comfort and hope come in the most unlikely of places. A moving story of family separation and the importance of the connection between animals and humans, this novel has the enormous heart and uplifting humor that readers have come to expect from the beloved author of Counting by 7s. “I couldn’t stop reading—I had to find out what would happen. An unusual and lovely real-life fairy tale.” —Linda Sue Park, New York Times Bestselling author of A Long Walk to Water “A gorgeous and emotional novel. I loved every page.” —Cynthia Kadohata, Newbery Medal-winning author of Kira-Kira
