Description : Physics of Dielectrics for the Engineer is a systematic attempt to clarify and correlate advanced concepts underlying the physics of dielectrics. It reviews the basics of electrostatics, the different models for the polarizability of atoms and molecules, and the macroscopic permittivity. It also discusses the behavior of matter in an alternating field in relation to complex permittivity, the interactions between field and matter, dissipative effects under high electric fields, the wide-gap semiconductor model, the types of charge carriers, and the main disruptive processes. Organized into three parts encompassing 12 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the physical concepts involved in the behavior of insulating materials subjected to high electric fields. It then explores the potential of a group of charges, and dipoles induced in an applied field. The book explains statistical theories of dipole orientation in an applied field and theories relating molecular and macroscopic quantities. The propagation of an electromagnetic wave, dipole relaxation of defects in crystal lattices, and space-charge polarization and relaxation are also discussed. The book explains the uni-dimensional polar lattice, intrinsic and impurity conduction in wide-gap semiconductors, thermal runaway, and collision breakdown. Many problems with corresponding solutions are included to assist the reader. This book will benefit electrical engineers, as well as electrical engineering students, scientists, and technicians.

Description : This book is designed both for advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students in electronic engineering, computer science and communications and for practising engineers engaged in the communications and software industries. It treats the subject from a practical standpoint and presents the underlying mathematics - which in some treatments of the subject can be daunting - in a way which makes them accesible and always directly relevant. Written by an author with extensive experience of the applications of the techniques to a wide range of practical engineering problems, the book presents the reader with systematic explanation of the techniques and methods of error coding. The work is supplemented by software-based experiments enabling the reader to verify the results and to carry out further investigation of the subject. All of the software used in the book can be obtained free of charge from the author's web site on uni/academic/D-H/eee/esg/staff/adh-prof.html.

Description : A History of Moonville, Ohio and a Collection of its Haunting Tales, Revised Edition, is an updated version of a previous work the author had published back in 2008. This revised edition contains more detailed history about Moonville and its surrounding towns, such as Zaleski, on how they came to be, most notably that Moonville was named by the railroad after a general store proprietor rather than the man who had actually founded the town; and that Zaleski was named after a Polish/French financier who never came to America to see his namesake town. This revised edition also contains more haunting tales of what had happened to some of those who had lived and worked in this remote mining town in eastern Vinton County, Ohio, mainly covering those who had been involved in train accidents surrounding the still-standing tunnel as these trains came barreling through the area; plus, there are a few tales of murder as well. There are also a few light-hearted tales most notably that of a well-known English author who had passed through Moonville on his way to tour America back in the late 1860s as well as a story about some feisty sisters, in Athens, who took on the expanding railroad. There are human interest elements in all of this, most notably to me, is the story of the Dexters who had been enslaved in Virginia, escaping in the 1860s, having made their way to Moonville in order to live out their lives in freedom. This book is about preserving the history of a mining town that began back in the 1850s, thriving for nearly fifty years, before it began its long slide into history, though not completely forgotten, for it had been, once, a vital part of Ohios history, especially in the days leading up to the American Civil War; and that is why I wrote and revised this work - for Moonvilles history is a part of Ohios history.

Description : This book accomplishes two things simultaneously: it teaches you to use the latest version of the powerful MATLAB programming environment, and it teaches you core, transferable programming skills that will make you feel at home with most procedural programming languages. MATLAB has been in existence for more than 30 years and is used by millions of engineers, scientists, and students worldwide, both for its depth and its easy usability. With dozens of specialized toolboxes available beyond the core program, as well as its companion program Simulink for simulation and model-based design, MATLAB can serve as an invaluable aid throughout your career. Unlike many MATLAB books, ours assumes no prior experience in computer programming. Using an approachable tone, we take you from the simplest variables through complex examples of data visualization and curve fitting. Each chapter builds on the last, presenting an in-depth tutorial on a focused concept central to programming, using the MATLAB language, but applicable to countless other popular and in-demand languages such as C++, Java, JavaScript, R, and Python. We'll ask you to perform short exercises as we work through each chapter, followed by more end-to-end exercises and mental challenges at the chapter's end. As the complexity of the concepts increases, the exercises present increasingly real-world engineering challenges to match. Once you've completed An Engineer's Introduction to Programming with MATLAB 2019, you will have a solid foundation in computer programming forms and concepts and a comfort with the MATLAB environment and programming language. We believe that you'll enjoy both gaining and having that knowledge, and that you'll be able to use it almost immediately with your other coursework. Videos The authors of this book have recorded instructional videos to accompany this book. These videos allow you to see many of the instructions given in the tutorials being executed in MATLAB itself. These videos should be of particular help to visual learners. This book includes • Step-by-step tutorials written to help the novice user become proficient using MATLAB • A Getting Started chapter for configuring MATLAB for use with the tutorials • Organization and a level suitable for a first year introductory engineering course • Updates for the MATLAB 2019a release. • Tips offering suggestions and warnings as you progress through the book • Key Terms and Key Commands listed to recap important topics and commands learned in each tutorial • An index to help you easily look up topics • Exercises at the end of each tutorial providing challenges to a range of abilities.
