Description : 2011 marked the 400th anniversary of the King James version of the Bible. No other book has been as vital to the development of English writing or indeed to the English language itself. This major collection of essays is the most complete one-volume exploration of the King James Bible and its influence to date. The chapters are written by leading scholars from a range of disciplines, who examine the creation of the King James Bible as a work of translation and as a linguistic and literary accomplishment. They consider how it differed from the Bible versions which preceded it, and assess its broad cultural impact and precise literary influence over the centuries of writing which followed, in English and American literature, until today. The story will fascinate readers who approach the King James Bible from the perspectives of literary, linguistic, religious or cultural history.

Description : The King James Version has proved itself for 400 years. The greatest translators in history translated it. A king directed them to translate it into English reproducing the original language of God's Word as close as possible. One must use a literal translation. My review suggests only three qualify: The King James Version, English Standard Version, and the New Revised Standard Version. The Dynamic Equivalent translations are not recommended because they omit or add words to God's original Words. . "First things" are put first with a technique of presenting God's Word to an individual who has never heard the name of Jesus. . The best criteria for selecting a Bible translation are outlined including a back-up Bible. . "Five bits of knowledge" needed for Bible study are given. . The spirituality of the translators including Wycliffe and Tyndale are noted. The King James Bible used today is the 1769 edition by Blayney. . Over 50 martyrs who died for God's Word are reviewed. . One of the greatest military battles for the preservation of God's Word is reviewed in detail. There have been no manuscript discoveries that change the doctrine of the King James Bible."

Description : In this collection of essays, thirty scholars from diverse disciplines offer their unique perspectives on the genius of the King James Version, a translation whose 400th anniversary was recently celebrated throughout the English-speaking world. While avoiding nostalgia and hagiography, each author clearly appreciates the monumental, formative role the KJV has had on religious and civil life on both sides of the Atlantic (and beyond) as well as on the English language itself. In part 1 the essayists look at the KJV in its historical contexts—the politics and rapid language growth of the era, the emerging printing and travel industries, and the way women are depicted in the text (and later feminist responses to such depictions). Part 2 takes a closer look at the KJV as a translation and the powerful precedents it set for all translations to follow, with the essayists exploring the translators’ principles and processes (with close examinations of “Bancroft’s Rules” and the Prefaces), assessing later revisions of the text, and reviewing the translation’s influence on the English language, textual criticism, and the practice of translation in Jewish and Chinese contexts. Part 3 looks at the various ways the KJV has impacted the English language and literature, the practice of religion (including within the African American and Eastern Orthodox churches), and the broader culture. The contributors are Robert Alter, C. Clifton Black, David G. Burke, Richard A. Burridge, David J. A. Clines, Simon Crisp, David J. Davis, James D. G. Dunn, Lori Anne Ferrell, Leonard J. Greenspoon, Robin Griffith-Jones, Malcolm Guite, Andrew E. Hill, John F. Kutsko, Seth Lerer, Barbara K. Lewalski, Jacobus A. Naudé, David Norton, Jon Pahl, Kuo-Wei Peng, Deborah W. Description : The Authorised Version of the Bible, commonly known as the King James Bible, was first published in 1611. The most widely accepted rendering of the Scriptures for four hundred years, the 1611 Bible has become a classic of the English language, and countless of its original phrases have passed into standard idiomatic English. Most present-day editions incorporate conservative modernisations of spelling and punctuation introduced over a century and a half by subsequent editors and printers: the text that is commonly available is that of the 1769 revision, not that of 1611. There were two printings undertaken by Robert Barker, the King's printer in that year, and there are many variations between these two issues. This edition, produced by the Cambridge scholar William Aldis Wright in the early twentieth century, accurately and uniquely represents the original text in a clear and readable form, together with a list of the variations between the two printings of 1611 - a feature that no conventional facsimile edition can offer.

Description : Donald L. Brake quantifies the legacy of this remarkable tome's unique place in history. The 1611 King James Version is the cornerstone and linchpin for all subsequent English translations. He vividly portrays the quality of this seventeenth-century translation as that of precision, enchantment, and passion of a sacred book that has shaped human history for more than two thousand years. He recounts details that emphasize its use of a metric style and rhythm generating a lyrical masterpiece with a compelling resonance for public reading. The KJV's mastery of English expression and its seemingly endless staying power is unparalleled among modern versions. Using thorough comparisons of editions and versions, the author has researched the KJV with the goal of an honest and reasoned approach to the ever-debated value of the popular, but outdated Authorized Version. Brake's study prompted him to do a worldwide census of surviving 1611 "He" Bibles (identified from Ruth 3:15: ". . . and he went into the city."). His purpose was to establish a pedigree of sorts by recording for each copy an exhaustive description eliminating much of the risk of confusion in identifying the nearly 200 extant copies. He cautions that the value of any original KJV depends on a positive identification of authenticity. Brake's work confirms the premise that the literary merits and conscientious translation of a seventeenth-century book has profound twenty-first century relevance.

Description : War is an armed conflict between states or nations. The causes of war may be ideological, political, racial, economic, or religious. War has been a feature of history. The use of fighting forces requires strategy and tactics. Efforts to end war have all failed, including the League of Nations and the United Nations. The laws of war are not recognized. There has been no success in leaving out the civilian population in any war. The biblical concept of war required that God declare the war. The LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war from generation to generation (Exod. 17:16). The book of the wars of the LORD (Num. 21:14). Our fight against radical Islam is a fight for LORDs battles (1 Sam. 18:7). Our holy war is against murder, terrorists, the rise of ISIS and forty-four known terrorist groups, and a vanishing freedom. It is nowfight or die!

Description : This book is for those of you who believe you could be, indeed should be, enjoying a happier, more satisfying life. You do not accept the notion that an individual can simply talk himself or herself into that state. You may have a broken heart, or be facing cancer, or maybe simply know there's more to life than you have. You acknowledge your helplessness without the power of God, but you know he is able to make you happy and your life really worth living. You greatly desire to be touched and to learn and accept His promises and provisions. You may know to search the scriptures because Jesus said we live by every Word of God, but that may present a challenge because the words in the King James Bible do not say the same things as the words in the versions. Does that really make a difference? What are some changes in the text? Are they important? Are you possibly missing anything? Are you reading translation errors? Are you bored with Bible studies but want to know more about His Word? In brief, is the Word of God important to you? If so, this book is for you. It was written with you in mind.

Description : Though more than four hundred years have elapsed since the Bishops' Bible was first published in 1568, its story has never been adequately told. No book-length evaluation has been published, and no adequate bibliography is available for guidance in studying this least known of the Tudor-period Bibles. This neglect is surprising in that Shakespeare's earlier plays reflect his use of the Bishops' Bible and that the Bishops' Bible was used by the translators of the King James Version as the basis for their revision. This study depicts the religious, literary, and intellectual atmosphere that produced the Bishops' Bible, describes its place in sixteenth-century translations, re-evaluates its contribution to the study of the English Bible, and investigates the history and qualifications of the men invited to participate in the translation project. Attention is given to the artwork, the most elaborate of any in first editions of early English Bibles, and to the notes designed to correct the objectionable Calvinistic notes of the Geneva Bible. A presumption that the bishops would not prepare a better Bible until "a day after domesday" gives the title to this study--The Day after Domesday.

Description : This book reveals Bible prophecies that show we are living near the end of time. Author, Jimmie L. Chapman says, ?The signs are everywhere and we need to be observant. History proves that all the ancient Bible prophecies, concerning the nation of Israel and the coming of Christ, were accurately fulfilled; as well as most of the prophecies for the Church Age.? He shows us why we should believe the prophecies for the end times will be just as accurately fulfilled. ?We, as Christians, the people of God, should not fail to recognize the signs that God is giving this generation, ? he cautions us. He also warns us, ?The generation that is alive right now, could see the end of the world as we know it. The world is rapidly moving toward the one world government that is the beast which both Daniel and John prophesied would arise to power and rule the world in the last days.?

Description : The survival and revival of Roman Catholicism in post-Reformation Britain remains the subject of lively debate. This volume examines key aspects of the evolution and experience of the Catholic communities of these Protestant kingdoms during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Rejecting an earlier preoccupation with recusants and martyrs, it highlights the importance of those who exhibited varying degrees of conformity with the ecclesiastical establishment and explores the moral and political dilemmas that confronted the clergy and laity. It reassesses the significance of the Counter Reformation mission as an evangelical enterprise; analyses its communication strategies and its impact on popular piety; and illuminates how Catholic ritual life creatively adapted itself to a climate of repression. Reacting sharply against the insularity of many previous accounts, this book investigates developments in the British Isles in relation to wider international initiatives for the renewal of the Catholic faith in Europe and for its plantation overseas. It emphasises the reciprocal interaction between Catholicism and anti-Catholicism throughout the period and casts fresh light on the nature of interconfessional relations in a pluralistic society. It argues that persecution and suffering paradoxically both constrained and facilitated the resurgence of the Church of Rome. They presented challenges and fostered internal frictions, but they also catalysed the process of religious identity formation and imbued English, Welsh and Scottish Catholicism with peculiar dynamism. Prefaced by an extensive new historiographical overview, this collection brings together a selection of Alexandra Walsham's essays written over the last fifteen years, fully revised and updated to reflect recent research in this flourishing field. Collectively these make a major contribution to our understanding of minority Catholicism and the Counter Reformation in the era after the Council of Trent.

Description : The Bible was, by any measure, the most important book in early modern England. It preoccupied the scholarship of the era, and suffused the idioms of literature and speech. Political ideas rode on its interpretation and deployed its terms. It was intricately related to the project of natural philosophy. And it was central to daily life at all levels of society from parliamentarian to preacher, from the 'boy that driveth the plough', famously invoked by Tyndale, to women across the social scale. It circulated in texts ranging from elaborate folios to cheap catechisms; it was mediated in numerous forms, as pictures, songs, and embroideries, and as proverbs, commonplaces, and quotations. Bringing together leading scholars from a range of fields, The Oxford Handbook of the Bible in Early Modern England, 1530-1700 explores how the scriptures served as a generative motor for ideas, and a resource for creative and political thought, as well as for domestic and devotional life. Sections tackle the knotty issues of translation, the rich range of early modern biblical scholarship, Bible dissemination and circulation, the changing political uses of the Bible, literary appropriations and responses, and the reception of the text across a range of contexts and media. Where existing scholarship focuses, typically, on Tyndale and the King James Bible of 1611, The Oxford Handbook of the Bible in England, 1530-1700 goes further, tracing the vibrant and shifting landscape of biblical culture in the two centuries following the Reformation.

Description : I wrote The Modern Version Incursion because there is a need in the church for Christians to see plainly that the modern versions of the Bible are counterfeits. God wrote one Bible, not three hundred! The Bible tells us plainly that God's word is forever settled in heaven, as Psalm 119:89 teaches. This means the word of God is established and firm in heaven. The modern versions attack the cardinal doctrines of the Christian faith and especially attack the Lord Jesus Christ. The modern versions are based on the second-century Gnostic beliefs that were prevalent in Alexandria, Egypt. They disbelieved that Jesus was the Son of God and that He was not the incarnation of deity. What is really unhealthy is when the pastor of a church pushes these counterfeits and convinces their congregation that they are the most accurate. I sincerely desire Christians to look at their modern version and then compare it with the King James Bible and ask the question, why is theirs so different? We will look at 747 verses, which should be more than enough to convince even the skeptic. Christians will search out a neighborhood to live in, check out a mutual fund or stock, research a car before they buy; but when it comes to Bibles, they couldn't care less what they use. It shows how Christian commitment is lacking, and the weakness of modern Christianity attests to that fact. If one uses a counterfeit, they will be weak in their walk. Since the 1901 ASV came out, the church has become so weak it needs to be put on life support. When you start making the comparisons in this book, you will see that Christianity has been sold a bill of goods.

Description : There are many book studies of particular books of the Bible. There is also a myriad of devotional and inspirational books regarding the Bible, and many questions about it. Why are there different accounts of some events? Why is the description of the earth and the world different from what we know today? Many of these questions—and others—are answered when a person learns how the Bible was put together. This book does not deal with theology or doctrine. It is an account of how the various parts of the Bible came to be included. Further, the book traces the journey of the Bible from its initial collections to Jerome and continues until its publication in the English language, in both the Protestant and the Catholic versions. The author has written this book for the eager layman and woman and also for the first-year college or Bible school student who is in a religious studies program.

Description : Christians everywhere are in the darkness of Deism regarding the Bible. Are you one of them? Deism believes God brings forth, then shows indifference toward finishing. This book asks: At what stage did God take His Holy Spirit away from the finishing details of the Bible? Did God gather the books and order them? Divide and number the chapters and verses? Translate a Bible, choosing its words down to the letters? Did God put Jesus’ words in red? In this book, by grace through faith, you will be made strong in knowing and understanding the way of the Father in life in the raising of the Bible from the seed Hebrew Old Testament, to the growth of the Greek New Testament, unto the maturity in the English finished and perfected Bible, the King James Bible.
