The Last Black Unicorn Book Excerpt:

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER “An inspiring story that manages to be painful, honest, shocking, bawdy and hilarious.” —The New York Times Book Review From stand-up comedian, actress, and breakout star of Girls Trip, Tiffany Haddish, comes The Last Black Unicorn, a sidesplitting, hysterical, edgy, and unflinching collection of (extremely) personal essays, as fearless as the author herself. Growing up in one of the poorest neighborhoods of South Central Los Angeles, Tiffany learned to survive by making people laugh. If she could do that, then her classmates would let her copy their homework, the other foster kids she lived with wouldn’t beat her up, and she might even get a boyfriend. Or at least she could make enough money—as the paid school mascot and in-demand Bar Mitzvah hype woman—to get her hair and nails done, so then she might get a boyfriend. None of that worked (and she’s still single), but it allowed Tiffany to imagine a place for herself where she could do something she loved for a living: comedy. Tiffany can’t avoid being funny—it’s just who she is, whether she’s plotting shocking, jaw-dropping revenge on an ex-boyfriend or learning how to handle her newfound fame despite still having a broke person’s mind-set. Finally poised to become a household name, she recounts with heart and humor how she came from nothing and nowhere to achieve her dreams by owning, sharing, and using her pain to heal others. By turns hilarious, filthy, and brutally honest, The Last Black Unicorn shows the world who Tiffany Haddish really is—humble, grateful, down-to-earth, and funny as hell. And now, she’s ready to inspire others through the power of laughter.

Summary of Tiffany Haddish s The Last Black Unicorn Book Excerpt:

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I had a lot of problems in school, because I was constantly being made fun of for my mom’s looks. I would take scissors and cut off my horn, because that is what the kids would say about me. #2 My grandma was wrong about the wart being a mole. It was actually a wart, and she took me to the doctor to have it removed. She told me that warts are caused by nasty people who do nasty things, but in reality, they are caused by HPV. #3 I went to a school called El Camino Real, which was 3 percent black. It was mostly white and Hispanic and Asian, and they were all rich. I was bused from South Central LA. I would try to write Audie letters, but I was illiterate. #4 I was told I was stupid every day growing up. I believed I was stupid, so I didn’t think I could do it. I never tried. As an adult, I worked at the airline and one of my coworkers called me stupid.

Review of the Last Black Unicorn Book Excerpt:

Tiffany Haddish's childhood and early adult life were...rough. You need to prepare yourself for hearing what she went through. Child abuse, molestation, physically abusive romantic relationships. At one point, she was a pimp. Which all sounds bleak, and it can be, at times. But those times are made bearable, because Haddish is an excellent storytellerBefore long, she became the first African American lady to have SNL, and later delivered her collection of memoirs, The Last Black Unicorn, to basic and public approval. She's driven one of the most unimaginably hard existences of anybody I've ever known, heard, or read about. Also, through it all, she has reliably made unreasonable preferences to push ahead. On the whole, we should discuss the things she had conflict with. She is strong. She was strong when she was a child, a teenager, and she is still strong today. I can't even believe how much she went through. I didn't know who she was until I watched Girls Trip and some of her promotional interviews, but once I did, I needed to know more about this authentic woman. Tiffany like most great comedians has had a rough life. Abandoned by her father, raised by a mentally ill and abusive mother, she spent years in foster care, was molested (even if she didn't realize it), married an abusive and controlling man twice (2 marriages to the same man) and was homeless. Had most people experienced even one of these things, it would have broken their spirit, but not Tiffany, her resilience and strong-will is a force to be reckoned with.

Can Laughter Make the World a Better Place Book Excerpt:

On one side is snide, arrogant, dismissive, sexist, racist, homophobic, transphobic, and otherwise abusive laughter. On the other side is laughter that is warm and supportive, compassionate and forgiving, encouraging, lifting, and healing. And there is so much in between. Such great differences in laughter lead to the question—can laughter make the world a better place? This book uses television shows like M*A*S*H and Malcolm in the Middle, movies like Zombieland and Life Is Beautiful, novels like A Confederacy of Dunces and The Sellout, insights by neuroscientists, philosophers, painters, social and political scientists, and an undocumented man and his daughter, as well as ideas from people like C. S. Lewis, Sigmund Freud, Brené Brown, Tiffany Haddish, and Hannah Gadsby to answer that question.

Black Women s Yoga History Book Excerpt:

Examines how Black women elders have managed stress, emphasizing how self-care practices have been present since at least the mid-nineteenth century, with roots in African traditions. How have Black women elders managed stress? In Black Women's Yoga History, Stephanie Y. Evans uses primary sources to answer that question and to show how meditation and yoga from eras of enslavement, segregation, and migration to the Civil Rights, Black Power, and New Age movements have been in existence all along. Life writings by Harriet Jacobs, Sadie and Bessie Delany, Eartha Kitt, Rosa Parks, Jan Willis, and Tina Turner are only a few examples of personal case studies that are included here, illustrating how these women managed traumatic stress, anxiety, and depression. In more than fifty yoga memoirs, Black women discuss practices of reflection, exercise, movement, stretching, visualization, and chanting for self-care. By unveiling the depth of a struggle for wellness, memoirs offer lessons for those who also struggle to heal from personal, cultural, and structural violence. This intellectual history expands conceptions of yoga and defines inner peace as mental health, healing, and wellness that is both compassionate and political. Stephanie Y. Evans is a Professor of Black Women's Studies, Director of the Institute for Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, and Affiliate Faculty in the Department of African American Studies and in the Center for the Study of Stress, Trauma, and Resilience at Georgia State University. Her books include Black Women and Social Justice Education: Legacies and Lessons (coedited with Andrea D. Domingue and Tania D. Mitchell); Black Women's Mental Health: Balancing Strength and Vulnerability (coedited with Kanika Bell and Nsenga K. Burton); and African Americans and Community Engagement in Higher Education: Community Service, Service-Learning, and Community-Based Research (coedited with Colette M. Taylor, Michelle R. Dunlap, and DeMond S. Miller), all published by SUNY Press.

The Dark Side of Stand Up Comedy Book Excerpt:

This book focuses on the “dark side” of stand-up comedy, initially inspired by speculations surrounding the death of comedian Robin Williams. Contributors, those who study humor as well as those who perform comedy, join together to contemplate the paradoxical relationship between tragedy and comedy and expose over-generalizations about comic performers’ troubled childhoods, addictions, and mental illnesses. The book is divided into two sections. First, scholars from a variety of disciplines explore comedians’ onstage performances, their offstage lives, and the relationship between the two. The second half of the book focuses on amateur and lesser-known professional comedians who reveal the struggles they face as they attempt to hone successful comedy acts and likable comic personae. The goal of this collection is to move beyond the hackneyed stereotype of the sad clown in order to reveal how stand-up comedy can transform both personal and collective tragedies by providing catharsis through humor.

Similarly, meditations included help the reader to put down their worries and turn them over to the unconscious world, and welcome in calm and restoring energy. The visual design of the book has been created to enhance the relaxing reading experience, with plenty of space to breathe... Meditations include: The bridge to...
