Description : George Sand is one the most celebrated writers and controversial personalities of nineteenth-century France; she is as famous for her bohemian lifestyle as for her written work. The Last Love of George Sand portrays the writer, political activist, and cultural figure as she starts a new chapter in her ever-surprising life: the mature years with her last lover, the young and talented engraver Alexandre Manceau. A turning point came for George Sand in 1849. After her political involvement in the revolution of 1848, Sand retreated to her country property, Nohant, with her son Maurice and started writing new plays. One day, Maurice introduced her to Alexandre Manceau, a young and shy artist thirteen years her junior. At forty-five, she was at the pinnacle of her career. She had a long history of tumultuous love affairs with famous artists such as Musset, Chopin, and Mérimée, but she had never experienced a peaceful and balanced relationship. With Manceau, Sand discovered that she could be loved, and fall in love herself, without drama. Their relationship would last fifteen years, and prove to be the most prolific period of Sand's life, with fifty books published including the novels Elle et lui, inspired by her relationship with Musset, and Le dernier amour, written just ten days after Manceau died of tuberculosis. Although much has been written about George Sand, most of the previous biographies are focused on her more turbulent times. In The Last Love of George Sand, Evelyne Bloch-Dano looks back on Sand's life from the vantage point of her years with Manceau.

Description : In the early twentieth century, a group of writers banded together in Moscow to create purely original modes of expression. These avant-garde artists, known as the Futurists, distinguished themselves by mastering the art of the scandal and making shocking denunciations of beloved icons. With publications such as "A Slap in the Face of Public Taste," they suggested that Aleksandr Pushkin, the founder of Russian literature, be tossed off the side of their "steamship of modernity." Through systematic and detailed readings of Futurist texts, James Rann offers the first book-length study of the tensions between the outspoken literary group and the great national poet. He observes how those in the movement engaged with and invented a new Pushkin, who by turns became a founding father to rebel against, a source of inspiration to draw from, a prophet foreseeing the future, and a monument to revive. Rann's analysis contributes to the understanding of both the Futurists and Pushkin's complex legacy. The Unlikely Futurist will appeal broadly to scholars of Slavic studies, especially those interested in literature and modernism.

Since then, SCRAPS, 1988, with New Horizons, in Chula Vista, donated funds to Humane Society; Brown Mare, with Avant Garde, in Missouri, gifted WWF; Big Trouble on Hog’s Back helped Wounded Warriors; and her other works with Xibris aided animal charities across the world. She was widely published in magazines under pen names in the late ’70s and won contests with her teachers’ help. Writing has been her passion and solace. Now with her love, Charles, at her side, she reaches out to those who hurt, need to heal, survive, move on, and grow past life that no longer work. Living in Dayton, Ohio, she writes for adults and children who need to laugh at lives that may not always seem funny. With a freshly minted PhD, she soars into the stratosphere to entertain and enlighten. A mother and grandmother, she sees life as a challenge, a tunnel where that light is no roaring train but an opportunity. To aspiring authors, write on, publish, or perish!

Description : Inspiration for The Deck of Life emerged from the author’s clinical observations of patients in his practice of dermatology and internal medicine. He became increasingly aware of the connection between the genetic code as it relates to body build, temperament, and disease predisposition. It was further observed that these factors were influenced by the patient’s “belief system” as it relates to personal characteristics, behavior, and reactions to life’s situations. This book explores this unique relationship and our inherent ability to alter these features. It confirms the truth that there is a choice and an unlimited capacity to live a stress free life, with peace, happiness, and longevity. The reader is guided to discover their dominant and sub-dominant temperament. A better understanding of ourselves enables us to “play a winning hand” with the cards we are dealt in life. Consequently, we make decisions more wisely in the areas of health, career choice, choosing a mate, child rearing, and the day-to-day communications and enjoyment of the people in our lives.

Description : Walt Whitman "is America," according to Ezra Pound. More than a century after his death, Whitman's name regularly appears in political speeches, architectural inscriptions, television programs, and films, and it adorns schools, summer camps, truck stops, corporate centers, and shopping malls. In an analysis of Whitman as a quintessential American icon, Kenneth Price shows how his ubiquity and his extraordinarily malleable identity have contributed to the ongoing process of shaping the character of the United States. Price examines Whitman's own writings as well as those of writers who were influenced by him, paying particular attention to Whitman's legacies for an ethnically and sexually diverse America. He focuses on fictional works by Edith Wharton, D. H. Lawrence, John Dos Passos, Ishmael Reed, and Gloria Naylor, among others. In Price's study, Leaves of Grass emerges as a living document accruing meanings that evolve with time and with new readers, with Whitman and his words regularly pulled into debates over immigration, politics, sexuality, and national identity. As Price demonstrates, Whitman is a recurring starting point, a provocation, and an irresistible, rewritable text for those who reinvent the icon in their efforts to remake America itself.

Description : From early, rhyming work in Love Poems and Others (1913) to the groundbreaking exploration of free verse in Birds, Beast and Flowers (1923), the poems of D.H Lawrence challenged convention and inspired later poets. This voloume includes extensive selections from these and other editions, and contains some of his most famous poems, such as 'Piano', a nostalgic reflection on lost youth and love for his mother; ' Snake' , exploring human fear of the natural world; the short, cutting commment of sexual politics of 'Can't be Borne'; and the quiet philosophical resignation of 'Basta!'. Using the revised poems, but in the order in which they appear in their original collections, this selection offers a fresh perspective that revals an innovative poet who gave voice to his most intense emotions. In his introduction, James Fenton dicusses the early publication and critical reception of Lawrence's poems, his develpoments as a poet and his use of free verse. This edition also includes a chronology, further reading and appendices, including Lawrence's comments on the work of Walt Whitman.

Description : Universally Foreign is a collection of writings from my experiences. Growing up with parents that experienced the civil rights movement and understanding the phrase,"it takes an entire village to raise a child", I have to step back and see that our society has changed quite a bit. I grew up in the south with all of the prejudices that it has along with the beauty of community. I've tried to capture the innocence of that and the moral transformation along with the truly indecent proposals and my struggles. I hope no one is offended by my expressions but are able to see life through another set of eyes.
