The Life Inside Book Excerpt:

'An authentic, fascinating and deeply moving story about the different ways people search for freedom.' TERRY WAITE 'Andy West’s tense and intimate book is an education - a completely unsentimental and, for that reason, a compassionate and moving one.' GEOFF DYER Andy West teaches philosophy in prisons. He has conversations with people inside about their lives, discusses their ideas and feelings and listens as the men and women he works with explore new ways to think about their situation. Could we ever be good if we never felt shame? What makes a person worthy of forgiveness? Could someone in prison ever be more free than someone outside? These questions about how to live are ones we all need to ask, but in this setting they are even more urgent. When Andy steps into jail, he also confronts his inherited guilt: his father, uncle and brother all spent time in prison. He has built a different life for himself, but he still fears that their fate will be his. As he discusses questions of truth, identity and hope with his students, he searches for his own form of freedom. Moving, sympathetic, wise and frequently funny, The Life Inside is an elegantly written and unforgettable book. Through its blend of memoir, storytelling and gentle philosophical questioning, readers will gain a new insight into our justice system, our prisons and the plurality of lives found inside.

My Life Inside Out Book Excerpt:

My unstructured upbringing, and cares to the wind attitude, led to my frequent incarceration, from childhood to adulthood, it’s a disturbing story, which is primarily aimed at the adult reading audience, who enjoy reading about reality situations and crime. I have always been a reader, and to a large extent, that helped me become a self taught person. Born on the banks of the Colorado River in Arizona, and raised up in the Marcos De Niza barrio projects in South Phoenix, I experienced the injustices of the cotton fields, Maricopa County Juvenile Detention Home, and Arizona State Industrial School at Fort Grant, Arizona. I wandered the desperate streets of Los Angeles, and the forlorn railroad tracks, alone, like a lost person without a purpose in life. I was locked up in the jails of Phoenix, and Los Angeles, before winding up in the California State penitentiary system. Upon my release, I struggled to stay out of the pen, and took the jobs that society at large would never want to take. Through numerous personal tragedies, incarcerations, and unfortunate circumstances, I lost control of my life. No one was ever able to change my destructive behavior. The changes when they occurred came from within me, when I could no longer cope, with the situations I had cast my self into. Looking back, I can now see what I couldn’t see, during those hopeless time periods. I was very fortunate, to finally be able to leave that life behind me, through relationships that believed in me, and successfully worked, and built myself a civil service work career, from which I retired. I now spend my days enjoying life’s simple pleasures, after all my previous tragic missteps. My objective in life now, is to become an accomplished writer.

Life Inside the Cloister Book Excerpt:

Sacred architecture as reality and metaphor in secularised Western society Christian monasteries and convents, built throughout Europe for the best part of 1,500 years, are now at a crossroads. This study attempts to understand the sacred architecture of monasteries as a process of the tangible and symbolic organisation of space and time for religious communities. Despite the weight of seemingly immutable monastic tradition, architecture has contributed to developing specific religious identities and played a fundamental part in the reformation of different forms of religious life according to the changing needs of society. The cloister is the focal point of this book because it is both architecture, a physically built reality, and a metaphor for the religious life that takes place within it. Life Inside the Cloister also addresses the afterlife and heritagisation of monastic architecture in secularised Western society.

Life Inside Book Excerpt:

The patient is an ascetically pretty 15½-year-old white female. She is intelligent, fearful, extremely anxious, and depressed. Her rage is poorly controlled and inappropriately expressed. Diagnostic Impression: Program for social recovery in a supportive and structured environment appears favorable. Life Inside In 1967, three months before her sixteenth birthday, Mindy Lewis was sent to a state psychiatric hospital by court order. She had been skipping school, smoking pot, and listening to too much Dylan. Her mother, at a loss for what else to do, decided that Mindy remain in state custody until she turned eighteen and became a legal, law-abiding, "healthy" adult. Life Inside is Mindy's story about her coming-of-age during those tumultuous years. In honest, unflinching prose, she paints a richly textured portrait of her stay on a psychiatric ward -- the close bonds and rivalries among adolescent patients, the politics and routines of institutional life, the extensive use of medication, and the prevalence of life-altering misdiagnoses. But this memoir also takes readers on a journey of recovery as Lewis describes her emergence into adulthood and her struggle to transcend the stigma of institutionalization. Bracingly told, and often terrifying in its truths, Life Inside is a life-affirming memoir that informs as it inspires.

Martha Sigall worked with all the classic cartoon characters-Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tom & Jerry, Droopy Dawg, Beany & Cecil, Tweety, and Porky Pig-and the madcap artists who created them-Chuck Jones, Tex Avery, Bob Clampett, Frank Tashlin, Friz Freleng, William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, Bill Melendez, and Ben (Bugs) Hardaway. As a teenager Sigall became an apprentice painter working in the Golden Age of Hollywood at the Leon Schlesinger studio, making $12.75 per week coloring animation cels that would introduce Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd to the world. She recounts her wild and wonderful experiences with the Warner Bros. cartoon crew, working and laughing all day with the animators, partying all night with the Looney Tunes gang on the bowling and baseball teams, and participating in weekend scavenger hunts. She was president of the in-house "Looney Tunes Club," co-wrote the company gossip column, and performed in the company's theatrical troupe. After World War II, Martha joined MGM Animation (Tom & Jerry, Tex Avery) in Culver City as an assistant in the camera room and later freelanced her ink and paint services, creating art for many classic features, shorts, commercials, and TV series-including Garfield, Peanuts, and The Pink Panther. Written with warmth, humor, and a touch of nostalgia, this is a rarely told story of what it was like to be a part of a team of artists who were creating masterpieces of animation. Martha recalls her lifelong friendships with writer Michael Maltese, animators Ben Washam, Ken Harris, Herman Cohen, Paul Smith, Bob Matz, and many others. She writes of her experiences of being a woman in a male-dominated industry, particularly during the war years when she was one of the first women camera operators in the industry. Recipient of numerous awards for her artistry, Martha Sigall, Culver City, California, worked in animation production from 1936 to 1989.

General Motors Life Inside the Factory Book Excerpt:

This book portrays life inside a General Motors factory in the 1970s. Have you ever wondered why or how the lazy hourly workers came to be that way? This myth is debunked throughout the book. Anyone who has ever worked hourly for General Motors, the big three, or any large manufacturing company will enjoy the experiences provided in this book. They will find themselves reminiscing in the past about their own work experiences. Anyone who has had a close relative that worked in a factory will want to read this book to get a feel of what their loved ones went through while earning a living. The book comes to the stunning conclusion that General Motors top executives wasted a tremendous amount of human resources over the years. They looked down upon the factory workers and treated them as if they were disposable employees. They never attempted to tap into the vast and almost incalculable amount of brainpower available because they simply dismissed their classification hourly worker as useless. They treated them as if they were the source of all of their problems. They never even considered that with four hundred thousand hourly employees they might have had the resources right in front of them to help in solving the vast and complex problems that exist in the every day world of work. In todays competitive manufacturing environment Lean Manufacturing has stepped into the forefront for improvement. One of the two pillars of Lean manufacturing is respect for the worker. If youre an executive leader, manager or a student of lean youll want to read this book to see how not to do it. One theory of management says that if you dont like what you see around you go look in a mirror first because your workforce is a reflection of your thinking and actions.

Life Inside the Bubble Book Excerpt:

Why would a successful, twelve-year Secret Service agent resign his position in the prime of his career to run for political office against all the odds? How does the Washington DC “Bubble”—a haze of lobbyists, cronyists, staff, acolytes, consultants, and bureaucrats—surrounding the President distort his view of the world? Take the journey with Dan Bongino from the tough streets of New York City where he was raised, and later patrolled as a member of the NYPD, to the White House as a member of the elite Presidential Protective Division, through his ultimate decision to resign from the Secret Service in the prime of his career to run for the United States Senate against the feared Maryland Democratic machine. Follow his experiences inside the Washington DC “Bubble” and uncover why a government that includes the incredibly dedicated people he encountered while within it continues to make tragic mistakes. Learn how… • Bureaucratic laziness allows the NSA collection scandal to continue • The Department of Justice’s unwillingness to take on the tough cases allowed “Fast & Furious” to arm criminals • The Obama administration allowed US citizens to die in Benghazi in the worst dereliction of responsibility over security ever • The “Politics of Protection” leads to dangerous policies that weaken our country and cost American lives “A rare peak inside the DC ‘Bubble’ which should be a wake-up call to every American.” —Sean Hannity

Life Inside the Thin Cage Book Excerpt:

Frustrated by the often unrealistic standards of beauty presented by today’s media, many women have become trapped in a never-ending pattern of chronic dieting. Daily they endure destructive self-talk such as “I can’t eat that or I’ll get fat” or “If I could just lose a few more pounds everything would be better.” Chronic dieters may be any shape or size but they have one thing in common: They are often left to suffer alone with an undiagnosed “sub-clinical” eating disorder. Such sub-clinical disorders include eating habits that are unusual, even unhealthy, but do not fit the technical classifications of anorexia or bulimia. Addressing the many dimension of “chronic dieting,” Life Inside the “Thin” Cage offers a wake-up call and practical steps to those who need healing. Readers will find personal stories, insights into their secret patterns and habits, reassurance that they are not alone, checklists, self-tests, and, best of all, a new road to emotional, physical, mental and spiritual freedom.

Who is Jesus Christ Book Excerpt:

This book contains the complete story of the Lord Jesus Christ: AKA "The Word of God." In this book certain proofs are presented that He was with God (the Father) when the heaven and earth were created, and that He is the eternal light of the heaven(s). He created all things and the worlds. Mankind (male and female) is his special creation, and angels are created spirits watching over the welfare of mankind. It was O Lucifer, the great dragon, that old serpent, called the Devil and Satan who brought sin into the earth and caused the deaths of Adam and Eve. Angels left heaven to live on the earth during Noah's time. O Lucifer started war in heaven, and in defeat was confined to the earth. Christ Jesus was a close friend of the prophet Abraham, Moses, Elijah, and the prophets of the Old Testament. He is truly the Savior of mankind, the only begotten son of the true and living God. He is the great prophet, for He revealed to us the past, present and impending future. He came and left this earth on a prophetic time table. He is our Passover from death into everlasting life. He is the resurrection of the dead (both good and evil). He is the baptizer of the Holy Ghost (the Spirit of God), and He will judge the works of mankind to include spirit beings (angels).

The Wind from Heaven s Window Book Excerpt:

This collection is a combination of romantic, philosophic, mystical, and spiritual poetry written to warm even the coldest of hearts. They come from a very inspired place that speaks of a great desire to understand ourselves. The elusive butterfly in all of us, that out of its innate curiosity to learn and experience things by necessity, transforms itself. They also speak of the unique place that we all share in the divine tapestry we call life and how we are all intimately connected. The poems reflect on the betrayal and hypocrisy that we all inevitably encounter on our journey through life. Most importantly, a message of hope and joy runs through them, so that we are always reminded that even in our darkest moments, the light of truth and love has never abandoned us. The book also shares some of the stories that inspired and motivated some of the poems. They run the gamut, from gut-wrenching tearjerkers to deeply impassioned pleas for universal kindness to the whimsical frolic of a playful little child. Included is a section titled Musings on Life. These are philosophic perspectives intended to be life lessons for the reader. It's been said that not all men are masters, but all masters have been men. Along that same line of thinking, the author feels that although not all philosophers are poets, all poets are philosophers.
