Description : In April 1991 BusinessWeek ran a cover story entitled, “I Can't Work This ?#!!@ Thing,†about the difficulties many people have with consumer products, such as cell phones and VCRs. More than 15 years later, the situation is much the sameâ€"-but at a very different level of scale. The disconnect between people and technology has had society-wide consequences in the large-scale system accidents from major human error, such as those at Three Mile Island and in Chernobyl. To prevent both the individually annoying and nationally significant consequences, human capabilities and needs must be considered early and throughout system design and development. One challenge for such consideration has been providing the background and data needed for the seamless integration of humans into the design process from various perspectives: human factors engineering, manpower, personnel, training, safety and health, and, in the military, habitability and survivability. This collection of development activities has come to be called human-system integration (HSI). Human-System Integration in the System Development Process reviews in detail more than 20 categories of HSI methods to provide invaluable guidance and information for system designers and developers.

Description : In Nightingale Songs, survivors of domestic violence share their personal stories and professionals talk about their involvement in this challenging field and what their experiences have taught them. This book provides useful information for those considering working in the field of domestic violence (DV), especially the importance of self-care, and will speak to anyone whose life has been personally touched by domestic violence. Private stories are revealed for the purpose of raising public awareness about violence in the home. Kendra presents DV as a social issue, needing to be understood and addressed at the community level. The diversity of stories reflect Singaporean society, illustrating that this social problem is not limited to one class or ethnic group but crosses all boundaries of race, religion, education and socio-economic background.

Description : The earliest Turkish verses, dating from the sixth century A.D., were love lyrics. Since the love has dominated the Turks' poetic modes and moods - pre-Islamic, Ottoman classic, folk, modern. In style, form and sensibility, this collection offers a broad spectrum: virtual all types and varieties are represented here. The English versions are loyal to the originals and strive to be authentic poems in English. Here are lyrics from pre-Islamic Central Asia, passages from epics, mystical ecstasies of such thirteenth-century figures as Rumi and Yunus Emre, classical poems of the Ottoman Empire (including Suleyman the Magnificent and women courtly poets), lilting folk poems and the work of the legendary communist Nazim Hikmet (who is arguably Turkey's most famous poet internationally) and the greatest living Turkish poet, Fazil Husnu Daglarca. The verses in this collection are true to the Turkish spirit as well as universal in the appeal. experience Poetry was for many centuries the premier Turkish genre and love its predominant them Some of the best expressions of that happy coalescence can be found in this volume.

Description : Brought up in smalltown America by a grandmother who despises her, Cassie McGann's childhood is one of misery and rejection. Fleeing to New York she falls in love with handsome Irish racehorse trainer Tyrone Rosse, and when he marries her and takes her back to Claremore, his tumbledown mansion in Ireland, it looks as if she has found happiness at last. Passionately in love as she is, Cassie finds the all-male world of horses and racing rather lonely. There is much for her to learn, not least about the man she has married. Tyrone's success depends heavily on the whims of the rich owners, men - and women - who can be very demanding. And Cassie must learn to endure the enmity of one in particular, who comes out of her buried past determined to destroy her. When tragedy strikes, it seems that Cassie must once again face rejection and lose her hard-won security. But although the chances of success are slim and the cost in personal happiness considerable, she will not give in, and fights against all odds to survive in a world closed against her.

Description : “In poetic prose . . . Nightingale’s intimate reflections and succulent style present a textured picture of the city and its people, culture, and antiquity.” —Publishers Weekly Granada resident Steven Nightingale excavates the rich past of his adopted city and its surrounding countryside, finding there a lavish story of utopian ecstasy, political intrigue, and finally anguish. Medieval Granada witnessed a flourishing of poetry in several languages, the first modern translations of Greek philosophy, the birth of algebra, and the construction of architectural masterpieces such as the Alhambra and the Generalife. Yet with Ferdinand and Isabella’s sack of Granada in 1492, its centuries-old reputation as an artistically vital haven for multiple ethnic and religious groups began to erode Nightingale’s own account of the region’s medieval zenith recovers the intellectual pageantry and aesthetic splendor of this astounding period in Western history and the marvelous city that was its cultural center. “An exuberant and beautifully written book and as packed with information as a pomegranate is with seeds . . . Nightingale possesses a keen tactile sense of the place; his approach is refreshingly sensuous.” —The Wall Street Journal “Not only a memoir of one family’s communion with a dream house, it’s the unearthing of a long-buried dream of civic harmony, a reawakening.” —The New York Times Book Review “Armchair travel enthusiasts and those who are interested in Spanish and Islamic history will enjoy this tale.” —Library Journal “An unabashed love song to Granada . . . a fascinating historical overview.” —Booklist
