Quicklet on The Nasty Bits by Anthony Bourdain Book Excerpt:

Quicklets: Your Reading Sidekick! ABOUT THE BOOK When I look back on the last five years since I wrote the obnoxious, over-testosteroned memoir that transported me out of the kitchen and into a never-ending tennuel of pressurized cabins and airport lounges, its a rush of fragments, all jostling for attention. Some good, some bad, some pleasurable and some excruciating to remember. The Nasty Bits, Anthony Bourdains fifth book, is a collection of essays written in the years after publishing his breakout book, the bestselling Kitchen Confidential, and is aptly subtitled Collected Varietal Cuts, Usable Trim, Scraps, and Bones. Though the book is not enough to gain a sense of Bourdain as a person or a chef, the collection of rants, essays, travelogues, and short fiction could be considered a digestif to his other books, or an amuse-bouche for new readers. Bourdain is famous (maybe infamous) for his profane and gleefully anarchic writing, for smudging the clean and pristine pages of food writing with smears of grease, cigarette ash, and spilled vodka. This is perhaps best evidenced by the three names on the dedication page: Joey, Johnny, and Dee Dee, of the Ramones. Punk beats thrum through his books, along with a heady and unapologetic hunger; the book has a yearning to see and eat and drink and smoke, more and more. MEET THE AUTHOR Nicole Cipri is a restless wanderer and passionate writer. A graduate of the Evergreen State School in Olympia, WA, Nicole has since written about such varied topics as modern urban farming, the role of glitterbombing as political theater, and the economic impacts of natural disasters. You can follow her adventures on Twitter, @nicolecipri. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK Bourdain is acerbic, occasionally self-righteous, and furiously down-to-earth. He doesnt aim to shock, but rather, to shake his readers out of their comfort zones. He wants them to get down in the dirt with him, or in the steambath of a crowded kitchen; he wants to pry open peoples eyes, ears, and mouths, and force-feed them everything they didnt know they were missing. These essays were written in the years that followed Bourdains sudden rise to stardom (and infamy). There is anger and indignation, and there is homesickness and weariness. In the end, theres a fierce joy, and an acknowledgement of just how damn lucky he is. If theres a story arc to be had in the pages of The Nasty Bits, its about learning to be humble, no easy feat for anyone in the restaurant business, which Bourdain has often characterized as ruthless, absurd, and full and sadistic misfits. Bourdain is a stubborn asshole, and never tries to pretend otherwise. He admits to posturing and sticking his foot in his mouth, remarking in one of his own commentaries, what a twat I was when I wrote this. In his preface, Bourdain describes a phenomenon thats familiar to anyone who has spent significant time traveling: the more you travel, the less you know. The boundaries of your own knowledge and experience seem more apparent than ever, and you start to glimpse the stunning breadth of your own ignorance. Its both frustrating and addictive, Bourdain writes. Which only makes it harder when you visit, say, China for the first time, and realize how much more of it there is and how little time you have to see it. Buy a copy to keep reading! A Nasty Bit of Rough Book Excerpt:

A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "Forget all that Zen stuff--Here's the Golf Book the Golf World Really Needs...In David Feherty, we've found at last not only a true Renaissance man but also a writer with the guts to address the important themes of the 21st century. In A NASTY BIT OF ROUGH, the operatic singer turned golf pro turned witty golf commentator turns into a golf novelist and discusses the world's most vital issues -- flatulence; alcohol consumption in vast quantities; male genitalia getting whacked, bitten, lanced, and shot; and more flatulence...The overly serious world of golf writing needed a good gut-buster, and Feherty has supplied it." --Sports Illustrated "First Joyce, then Yeats, now Feherty. The tradition of Irish literary excellence continues, but with this difference: of the three, only Feherty is funny. At once ribald, hilarious, esoteric, moving, and profound, David Feherty's A NASTY BIT OF ROUGH shares this quality with other original works of genius: only he could have produced it. Pick this book up. If you don't laugh out loud at least once in every chapter, I will personally confiscate your splatter guard niblick. --Steven Pressfield, author of THE LEGEND of BAGGER VANCE "Golf's equivalent of the Hatfield-McCoy feud, with a cast of outlandishly eccentric duffers. If you're one of those people who think golf is a religion, prepare for some seriously funny blasphemy. A NASTY BIT OF ROUGH is the book S.J. Perelman would have written had he known anything about golf...and if he'd been taking steroids. Feherty's outrageous characters dance off the page." --Troon McAllister, author of THE GREEN "I didn't know Dad could write." --Rory Feherty, age 8 "A NASTY BIT OF ROUGH is a pure delight, as I suspected it would be since the delightful David Feherty wrote it...Every golf nut will love this book." --Dan Jenkins P.G. Wodehouse meets Judd Apatow in the most hilarious and outrageous Golf Entertainment wince CADDYSHACK. Fans of FEHERTY on The Golf Channel are in for a real treat (or punishment depending upon their temperament). Meet a character only David Feherty could create, Major General (Ret.) Sir Richard Gussett, his riotous imaginary uncle who presides over "Scrought's Wood," the world's most cantankerous golf club. In this first volume of his misadventures, Gussett sets his sights on the most prestigious prize in golf, the petrified middle finger of St. Andrew, patron saint of Scotland. Gussett must motivate his merry band of members through battles with incontinence, single malt Scotch, peculiar handicaps, and a litany of other unmentionable afflictions in order to seize the finger in a "friendly" competition with their ancient rivals, the dreaded and notorious McGregor clan. Feherty's fanatical fan base will rejoice, the driving range addicted will tee off, the USGA will have "no comment," and anyone who loves the game or knows someone who does will be unable to resist Feherty's storytelling and golfing gravitas.

A guide for sports fans on how to watch and appreciate the game of hockey More and more fans are watching the NHL each week, but many of them don't know exactly what they should be watching. How does an offense create shooting lanes for its best sniper? When a center breaks through and splits between two defensemen, which defender is to blame? Why does a goalie look like a Hall of Famer one week and a candidate for the minor leagues the next? This guide for sports fans on how to watch and appreciate the game of hockey takes you inside a coach's mind as he builds a roster or constructs a game plan, to the chaos of the goalie's crease, and deep into the perpetual chess match between offense and defense. Discussing topics such as what to look for when a team goes on the power play and why playing center might be the most grueling job in sports, Take Your Eye Off the Puck shows fans how to get the most out of watching their favorite sport.

Consuming History Book Excerpt:

Non-academic history – ‘public history’ – is a complex, dynamic entity which impacts on the popular understanding of the past at all levels. In Consuming History, Jerome de Groot examines how society consumes history and how a reading of this consumption can help us understand popular culture and issues of representation. This book analyzes a wide range of cultural entities – from computer games to daytime television, from blockbuster fictional narratives such as Da Vinci Code to DNA genealogical tools – to analyze how history works in contemporary popular culture. Jerome de Groot probes how museums have responded to the heritage debate and the way in which new technologies have brought about a shift in access to history, from online game playing to internet genealogy. He discusses the often conflicted relationship between ‘public’ and academic history, and raises important questions about the theory and practice of history as a discipline. Whilst mainly focussing on the UK, the book also compares the experiences of the USA, France and Germany. Consuming History is an important and engaging analysis of the social consumption of history and offers an essential path through the debates for readers interested in history, cultural studies and the media.

Ernest Marples Book Excerpt:

Ernest Marples revolutionised three UK government departments. At Transport (1959-1964) he appointed Dr Beeching chairman of British Railways and commissioned him to produce his infamous report, inaugurated motorways and introduced significant regulations for motorists. At Housing (1951-1954) he delivered 300,000 new houses annually and as Postmaster General (1957-1959), he reformed Post Office accounting systems and launched postcodes and Subscriber Trunk Dialling. This first biography of Marples uses newly-available archives to examine public and private transport policy, the growing power of the pro-road lobby and the identification of personal freedom with driving. Railway sentimentalism was no match for these. Marples was lucky not to be implicated in the Profumo Affair which rocked the Conservative Party but his political career was over soon afterwards. Questionable business practices caused his 1975 flight to Monaco hotly pursued by the Inland Revenue. Beeching, unhappy under a Labour government, returned to private industry although he later chaired a Royal Commission. Labour, despite promises, proved little friendlier to the railways but a more positive approach to loss-making passenger services eventually emerged under Barbara Castle. This book should appeal to those interested in Britain's railways and in mid-Twentieth Century British politics.

Her journey-and this book-is full of amazing people and surprising ideas.
