Description : Excerpt from The Owl Sacred Pack of the Fox Indians I may add that the works of Watkins and Lacombe on Cree, Cuoq on Algonkin, and Baraga on Chippewa have more than once been of great service to me in working out both the translation and the list of stems, as have also the works of Jones on Fox. The punctuation of the Indian text and the English translation has been made to correspond as closely as possible. The only essential point to note is that it has not always been feasible to make the commas correspond. The paragraphing (which is the same in both) has been done largely with a view to English usage. However, it has often been possible to take advantage of the well-known feature of Algonquian languages that identity and difference in third persons are kept apart by means of grammatical devices. The text, as stated above, was written out by Alfred Kiyana in the current syllabary, on which see Jones in the Boas Anniversary Volume, pages 88-93. It was subsequently dictated a couple of times by Edward Davenport, and thus phonetically restored by me. The second dictation was in order to correct spelling-pronunciations, as the Fox are not accustomed to read letters or other documents writ ten in the current syllabary aloud. When they first attempt it they are very apt to read the syllables with conventionalized values, thus la, le, li, lo as pa, pe, pi, po, irrespective of the fact that these values are likely to be wrong in any given instance, for la, etc., may equally well represent pA, pa, pi, pu, as well as other alternatives. I had previously trained Edward Davenport to read nearly correctly; and with the second dictation blemishes arising in this manner have, I think, been practically eliminated. A few visual errors have been corrected by me. There is another source of error which may occur in restoring a text dictated from a manuscript written in the current syllabary, and one difficult to control, namely, owing to the deficient phonetic character of the syllabary homographs may occur; that is, a word in the syllabary may be capable of two distinct phonetic restorations both equally justifiable but with entirely different meanings; and the wrong word may be dictated. An example is a ya ga te lei, which may be equally well aiya' kwatag "as far as light goes," or aiya' gwAtag in a pile. Fortunately homographs are not very frequent. It may be noted that a second dictation will not always remove blemishes of this nature; the word cited above was twice dictated with the wrong value. A grammatical analysis and the context are the only safe correctives to eliminate defects of this character. If I have spent much space in pointing out errors which are liable to occur in recording texts dictated from manuscripts written in the current syllabary, it is because they have hitherto been ignored. Description : "This is an edition and translation of an account of the Owl Sacred Pack which was written in the Meskwaki language by the owner of the pack, Alfred Kiyana, to accompany its transfer to Truman Michelson in 1914. Meskwaki is an Algonquian language now spoken in Tama County, Iowa... Kiyana was a superb story-teller, whose skill in employing the Meskwaki language can only be fully appreciated by repeated study of his texts. He attended school for only three months, and that was by running away to Kansas, and his English was rudimentary. He died in the Spanish Influenza pandemic in November of 1918."-- Introduction.

Description : Filmmaker, musicologist, painter, ethnographer, graphic designer, mystic, and collector of string figures and other patterns, Harry Smith (1927-1991) was among the most original creative forces in postwar American art and culture, yet his life and work remain poorly understood. Today he is remembered primarily for his Anthology of American Folk Music (1952)--an idiosyncratic collection of early recordings that educated and inspired a generation of musicians and roots music fans--and for a body of innovative abstract and nonnarrative films. Constituting a first attempt to locate Smith and his diverse endeavors within the history of avant-garde art production in twentieth-century America, the essays in this volume reach across Smith's artistic oeuvre. In addition to contributions by Paul Arthur, Robert Cantwell, Thomas Crow, Stephen Fredman, Stephen Hinton, Greil Marcus, Annette Michelson, William Moritz, and P. Adams Sitney, the volume contains numerous illustrations of Smith's works and a selection of his letters and other primary sources.

Description : The works of Edward Sapir (1884 - 1939) continue to provide inspiration to all interested in the study of human language. Since most of his published works are relatively inaccessible, and valuable unpublished material has been found, the preparation of a complete edition of all his published and unpublished works was long overdue. The wide range of Sapir's scholarship as well as the amount of work necessary to put the unpublished manuscripts into publishable form pose unique challenges for the editors. Many scholars from a variety of fields as well as American Indian language specialists are providing significant assistance in the making of this multi-volume series.

Description : At the funeral of Rex Long Visitor in 1965, Paul B. Steinmetz prayed with the Sacred Pipe as an image of Christ. This prayer was the beginning of a thirty-year journey of intellectual discovery for Steinmetz as he found the true meaning of the Sacred Pipe. The result: a book of deep religious faith and brilliant analytic acumen. One of the most important ritual objects used by many tribes throughout North America, the Pipe can best be understood in the context of Christian theology. Steinmetz presents an extensive ethnography about the Sacred Pipe and demonstrates how its many associations, in essence, are images of Christ. To explain fully this archetypal synthesis intuited at Rex Long Visitor's funeral, Steinmetz draws heavily on, and critically compares, the works of Mircea Eliade, Carl Jung, and Karl Rahner.

Description : A comprehensive and essential field reference, Beliefs and Rituals in Archaic Eastern North America reveals the spiritual landscape in the American Archaic period. Beliefs and Rituals in Archaic Eastern North America describes, illustrates, and offers nondogmatic interpretations of rituals and beliefs in Archaic America. In compiling a wealth of detailed entries, author Cheryl Claassen has created both an exhaustive reference as well as an opening into new archaeological taxonomies, connections, and understandings of Native American culture. The material is presented in an introductory essay about Archaic rituals followed by two sections of entries that incorporate reports and articles discussing archaeological sites; studies of relevant practices of ritual and belief; data related to geologic features, artifact attributes, and burial settings; ethnographies; and pilgrimages to specific sites. Claassen’s work focuses on the American Archaic period (marked by the end of the Ice Age approximately 11,000 years ago) and a geographic area bounded by the edge of the Great Plains, Newfoundland, and southern Florida. This period and region share specific beliefs and practices such as human sacrifice, dirt mound burial, and oyster shell middens. This interpretive guide serves as a platform for new interpretations and theories on this period. For example, Claassen connects rituals to topographic features and posits the Pleistocene-Holocene transition as a major stimulus to Archaic beliefs. She also expands the interpretation of existing data previously understood in economic or environmental terms to include how this same data may also reveal spiritual and symbolic practices. Similarly, Claassen interprets Archaic culture in terms of human agency and social constraint, bringing ritual acts into focus as drivers of social transformation and ethnogenesis. Richly annotated and cross-referenced for ease of use, Beliefs and Rituals in Archaic Eastern North America will benefit scholars and students of archaeology and Native American culture. Claassen’s overview of the archaeological record should encourage the development of original archaeological and historical connections and patterns. Such an approach, Claassen suggests, may reveal patterns of influence extending from early eastern Americans to the Aztec and Maya.

Description : Leonard Bloomfield (1887-1949) was one of the greatest linguists of the twentieth century. He devoted his entire life to a thorough-going study of language, its structure and its use, summed up in masterly fashion in his book Language (1933). After his premature death at the age of 62, his work was at first acclaimed as an exemplary application of the scientific method to linguistics, but then fell into unjustified neglect. Now that the centenary of his birth has passed, the time has come for the story of Bloomfield's life and work to be recounted in a biography. Accordingly, basing his discussion on all available materials (including some information not accessible until recently), Professor Hall has presented Bloomfield's life history in its intellectual and cultural setting. This book is not only a biography, but also a personal memoir, in which Hall draws on his contacts with Bloomfield, who was his teacher at Chicago and a senior colleague at Yale. There emerges from this study a fuller picture than we have had heretofore, presenting both Bloomfield's recognized achievement in establishing the study of language as a scientific discipline, and the less-known aspects of his character and of his personal life, which in certain respects was very tragic and sad.

Description : In this volume of 29 papers, readers interested in language variation and historical linguistics will find interesting theoretical proposals as well as suggestions concerning ways of approaching previously unsolved empirical problems in the field. The papers deal with various aspects of historical regional dialectology, and some border on the issue of dialectology and linguistic change. Although many deal with English, a number discuss Romance languages in general as well as Norwegian, German, relic languages of the eastern Alpine region, Coptic, and Fox. Some are devoted to more general issues. The language specific contributions also often cover areas of a more general nature. The results indicate new vistas for further productive research in the area of historical dialectology.
