Description : The book examines the topic of paternal authority as it developed over a long period of time. The focus is on the power of fathers as manifested within a complex fabric of legal, social, economic, political and moral aspects. In early modern times, a father’s power was based upon his personal and legal position as the one responsible for the family and the household in the sense of an economic unit, as well as on his moral authority over all those who belonged to said household. At the same time, the father was subject to public control, and his legal status was characterized not only by power, but also by obligations. This status was modelled after the figure of the pater familias as conceived of in Roman law—a concept that remained relevant up into the nineteenth century, though not without changes. Ultimately, the figure of the pater familias came to overlap with the modern-era perception of fathers’ disempowerment. The chapters of this book analyse the public responsibility of fathers in the case of an adulterous daughter, legal acts of emancipation by which a son could gain independence from his father, and various opinions with regard to "indulgent" fathering, paternal authority over married sons, and provisions set out in wills. This book was originally published as a special issue of The History of the Family.

Description : ‘‘The Prophecies of A Father’’ is a remarkable piece of literary work. The writer, His Excellency Ambassador Eddie M. Turay is very sincere and passionate in the presentation of his facts. The facts relate to the culture, traditions, customs and party politics of his country. The writer’s sincerity and passion revolves around the traditional beliefs and faith of his benevolent father in his ancestral spirits, late Paramount Chief Kande Turay of Sanda Chiefdom. He reveals that the late man was an animist who despite neither believed nor practiced Christianity and Islam, yet he gave him the freedom and support to become a practicing Christian. His father was not only liberal towards the two mainstream religions (Christianity and Islam) but he was a great admirer of the Whiteman’s education. That was why he gave him his blessings and support to pursue education for which he will ever remain grateful. Paramount Chieftaincy is one of the oldest and respectable political institutions in this part of the African Continent. The writer has thrown enlightening lights on the way it works in the Sanda Chiefdom, Northern Sierra Leone. One more amazing revelation of the book is the prophecies of the writer’s father. As the title of the book, it is befitting because all that his father prophesied have come to pass. His father did prophesise that the writer will dine and drink with Royalties, Prime Ministers and Presidents at home and abroad, which has come to pass. In terms of his country’s national politics, he paints the picture of the political culture that existed at the time. It bordered on dysfunctional tendencies, which was disturbing to him as an espouser of democracy and social justice. Thus, educated and trained in the ethics of social justice and fairness, the Ambassador was determined to challenge these vices. Ironically, it was his zealousness to challenge them that made him steal the heart of late President Siaka P. Stevens. The President was impressed, so he convinced him to drop his legal practice and become a politician where he would have the opportunity to fully inculcate and defend the values of fair play and social justice as espoused by democratic ethos, particularly at the grassroots levels of the nation’s politics. The writer skilfully draws the contrasts between the ‘‘Old’’ and ‘New’’ APC, and above all, the successful leadership of President Ernest Bai Koroma (Leader of the APC). He registers his unwavering support for the ‘‘New’’ APC Party of which he is a profound member and her admirable leadership. This book is an eye-catching read as well as educative for its sincerity, passion, fun, simple and quality language and buttressed by ideal concepts. HE Ambassador Eddie M. Turay’s colleagues in the Diplomatic Service, Foreign Office as well as politicians and educational institutions at home and abroad will find this book a handy resource material on Sierra Leone politics.

Description : New Testament scholars typically assume that the men who pervade the pages of Luke's two volumes are models of an implied "manliness." Scholars rarely question how Lukan men measure up to ancient masculine mores, even though masculinity is increasingly becoming a topic of inquiry in the field of New Testament and its related disciplines. Drawing especially from gender-critical work in classics, Brittany Wilson addresses this lacuna by examining key male characters in Luke-Acts in relation to constructions of masculinity in the Greco-Roman world. Of all Luke's male characters, Wilson maintains that four in particular problematize elite masculine norms: namely, Zechariah (the father of John the Baptist), the Ethiopian eunuch, Paul, and, above all, Jesus. She further explains that these men do not protect their bodily boundaries nor do they embody corporeal control, two interrelated male gender norms. Indeed, Zechariah loses his ability to speak, the Ethiopian eunuch is castrated, Paul loses his ability to see, and Jesus is put to death on the cross. With these bodily "violations," Wilson argues, Luke points to the all-powerful nature of God and in the process reconfigures--or refigures--men's own claims to power. Luke, however, not only refigures the so-called prerogative of male power, but he refigures the parameters of power itself. According to Luke, God provides an alternative construal of power in the figure of Jesus and thus redefines what it means to be masculine. Thus, for Luke, "real" men look manifestly unmanly. Wilson's findings in Unmanly Men will shatter long-held assumptions in scholarly circles and beyond about gendered interpretations of the New Testament, and how they can be used to understand the roles of the Bible's key characters.

Description : From a pampered son who showed little promise, to his rise to the presidency, George W. Bush has transformed himself through acts of will and faith. Stanley Renshon examines the psychological transformation of Bush and identifies those pivotal changes that allowed him to achieve success in his personal life and in the political arena, and shows how Bush's personal transformation has come to shape his political policies. The man who battled--and defeated--his own inner demons has become a president determined to battle the demons of terrorism and extremism that prevent democracy from flourishing around the world. This psychological portrait provides a much-needed antidote to prevailing critiques that ridicule Bush's values and policies, as it celebrates his resolve and strong leadership.

Description : When I was young, I was mysteriously protected and kept from harm. I was hit by a car, severely burned on the palms of my hands, and literally thrown out of a car into a busy intersection. Somehow I never sustained any injuries. I had many questions as this divine protection and provision continued throughout my life. Little did I know that what I endured was part of a plan for me to know what I have now learned, and share this with all who will listen. These adventures with our heavenly Father not only gave me answers to my questions but also much understanding of our Father and His works. This book tells about my adventures and part of what I learned. It is the beginning of a series of books containing what our Father has taught me. It was not easy for me to hear. It was not easy for me to write. It is always difficult for us to listen to Him. All He is asking now is for us to listen to what He has told us from the beginning and respond.

Description : Headline: A study of how Italian films re-envisage male identity in response to sexual liberationBlurb: Italian cinema has traditionally used the trope of an inadequate man in crisis to reflect on the country's many social and political upheavals. Masculinity and Italian Cinema examines how this preoccupation with male identity becomes especially acute in the 1970s when a set of more diverse and inclusive images of men emerge in response to the rise of feminism and gay liberation. Through an analysis of the way Italian films explore anxieties about male sexuality and femininity, the book shows how such anxieties also intersect with particular preoccupations about national identity and political engagement. This is an essential study-tool to understand the multiple constructions of masculinity in Italian cinema, helping students and researchers to understand the work of some of Italy's most provocative filmmakers.Key Features* Re-examines key Italian films, including Bernardo Bertolucci's The Conformist, Ettore Scola's A Special Day, Pier Paolo Pasolini's Theorem and Lina Wertmuller's The Seduction of Mimi, in the light of gender and queer theory.* Covers the major thematic concerns, genres and stylistic traits of 1970s Italian political cinema* Analyses the broader cultural context of 1970s Italy, including sections on Italian feminism, Gay liberation and the post-'68 social movements.Key Words: Gender; Queer; Body; Gay; Feminism; Pier Paolo Pasolini; Bernardo Bertolucci; Lina Wertmuller; Nanni Moretti; Federico Fellini; Ettore Scola; Marco Ferreri.

Description : The authority of the Bible in the Gospel narratives and Paul's impassioned epistles revolve around the factual basis and foundational nature of Christ's resurrection for Christianity. The question is: how can the resurrection best be understood? In 'Resurrection and Discipleship', Thorwald Lorenzen provides a balanced and nuanced investigation of this question.
