Description : Betty Smith, daughter of the president of the United States, is a rare combination of extreme beauty and intelligence. She is also a unique product of a new form of security initiative. Betty is a walking weaponry entity. She can operate literally any type of weaponry system, has extensive knowledge of technology and geography, and is fluent in six languages. Her extensive training has been kept secret, unknown to even her closest confidants, including the President and First Lady. Betty journeys through a sequence of encounters with Islamic fundamentalists. First, she is kidnapped, but the abductors soon find out that they made a great mistake-and they pay dearly for it. The counteroffensives Betty launches and the subsequent engagement with other terrorists prove that she is certainly not just a girl next door, but also a product of hardcore military training and a blend of all the branches of Special Forces. In the end, the toughest challenge she faces is with her own fellow citizens. When her father's heart fails and he needs a donor for a heart transplant operation, Betty is lied to about the identity of the donor. This level of betrayal is utterly overwhelming-and unacceptable-to Betty. And she's going to make sure that someone answers for it.

Description : MORE than two hundred years have elapsed since the first cargo of slaves was landed on the banks of the James River, in the colony of Virginia, from the West coast of Africa. From the introduction of slaves in 1620, down to the period of the separation of the Colonies from the British Crown, the number had increased to five hundred thousand; now there are nearly four million. In fifteen of the thirty-one States, Slavery is made lawful by the Constitution, which binds the several States into one confederacy. On every foot of soil, over which Stars and Stripes wave, the Negro is considered common property, on which any white man may lay his hand with perfect impunity. The entire white population of the United States, North and South, are bound by their oath to the constitution, and their adhesion to the Fugitive Slaver Law, to hunt down the runaway slave and return him to his claimant, and to suppress any effort that may be made by the slaves to gain their freedom by physical force. Twenty-five millions of whites have banded themselves in solemn conclave to keep four millions of blacks in their chains. In all grades of society are to be found men who either hold, buy, or sell slaves, from the statesmen and doctors of divinity, who can own their hundreds, down to the person who can purchase but one.

Description : Clotel; or The President's Daughter (1853), the first published novel by an African American, has recently emerged as a canonical text for courses in African American as well as nineteenth-century American literature courses. The story was inspired by the rumored sexual relationship between Thomas Jefferson and his slave Sally Hemings, and this edition of Clotel is the only one to reprint selections from the key texts and cultural documents that Brown drew on (and even appropriated) when he wrote his novel. The streamlined second edition includes an updated introduction that incorporates the explosion of scholarship on the novel over the past decade, when proof of the relationship between Jefferson and Hemings emerged. In addition to their attention to this relationship, the cultural documents focus more directly on the texts about slavery and race that Brown drew on, and on Brown's own controversial approach to writing and revising Clotel.
