Description : A GOOD MORNING AMERICA BOOK CLUB PICK "An intense psychological drama that will be embraced by serious book clubs and fans of Lionel Shriver's We Need to Talk about Kevin." —Kristin Hannah, #1 New York Times bestselling author "A poetic, propulsive read that set my nerves jangling." —Lisa Jewell, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Then She Was Gone A tense, page-turning psychological drama about the making and breaking of a family—and a woman whose experience of motherhood is nothing at all what she hoped for—and everything she feared Blythe Connor is determined that she will be the warm, comforting mother to her new baby Violet that she herself never had. But in the thick of motherhood's exhausting early days, Blythe becomes convinced that something is wrong with her daughter—she doesn't behave like most children do. Or is it all in Blythe's head? Her husband, Fox, says she's imagining things. The more Fox dismisses her fears, the more Blythe begins to question her own sanity, and the more we begin to question what Blythe is telling us about her life as well. Then their son Sam is born—and with him, Blythe has the blissful connection she'd always imagined with her child. Even Violet seems to love her little brother. But when life as they know it is changed in an instant, the devastating fall-out forces Blythe to face the truth. The Push is a tour de force you will read in a sitting, an utterly immersive novel that will challenge everything you think you know about motherhood, about what we owe our children, and what it feels like when women are not believed.

Description : The Push and Pull by Noah Berghammer is a book that follows the transitional period of being eighteen and graduating high school to whatever comes next. It encapsulates the feelings of one chapter of life closing and a new, more-uncertain one opening. The “push” can be described as wanting to get out of one’s hometown, eager for a fresh start, with new people and experiences. As for the “pull,” well, it is everything trying to hold one back: the comfortability, a sense of home place, nostalgia, and more. This work is a series of nonlinear lessons learned and still learning, and it is told through Noah’s eyes and experiences while pulling from the undeniable relatability of this time period in one’s life.

Description : The Author Lyn Gain is, as she notes, "out of the same stable" as Germaine Greer - the Sydney Push in the early sixties. She spent her first sixteen years waiting to find bohemia; the next sixteen years in the bosom of the Push; the next sixteen years in the social welfare advocacy movement; and the last sixteen years as a digital era sea-changer on the Mid North Coast of NSW, with a marginal attachment to academe. She is currently considering her options for the next sixteen years. The Book Witch Girl and the Push is a unique insider story of the Sydney Push, told by someone who was actually there. It explodes numerous myths and misconceptions which have been perpetuated by outside commentators. The book spans over 50 years of social, political and sexual change in Australia, from the late fifties American rock and roll perceived as contributing to a 'moral crisis' amongst 'the youth', to the modern day 'slut walks'. It is a fascinating and irreverent memoir from the present day perspective of Witch Girl, a nickname bestowed on the author as a bewitching 17 year old in the Royal George hotel in the early sixties. Witch Girl is both the heroine and narrator of the book which provides numerous frank, funny and fearless observations and sketches about people as diverse as: Cec Abbott (once head of the NSW Drug Squad); Premiers Nick Greiner and John Fahey; Supreme Court Chief Justice Murray Gleeson; feminist Eva Cox; radical trad, the Rev. Harry Herbert; and a vast array of eccentric Push characters and ex-lovers, as well as state government ministers, left wing unionists, prominent welfare advocates and some alternative life-stylers. This is a many layered book. The author cunningly disguises what is essentially a philosophical treatise as a story of sex, drugs, rock 'n roll and more sex, told in a charmingly frank, no-holds barred style. You will not get any looking down the nose in this tale. What you do get are the big questions, seriously considered, with answers so well pulled together it will leave an indelible impression as well as a way of finding your way through the most complex questions of right and wrong. There is plenty of reference to sex in the book, but there are no sex scenes.

Description : This book is the first to summarize new technologies for engineered cell manipulation. The contents focus on control of cellular functions by nanomaterials and control of three-dimensional cell–cell interactions. Control of cellular functions is important for cell differentiation, maturation, and activation, which generally are controlled by the addition of soluble cytokines or growth factors into cell culture dishes. Target antigen molecules can be efficiently delivered to the cytosol of the dendritic cells using the nanoparticle technique described here, and cellular functions such as dendritic cell maturation can be controlled easily and with precision. This book describes basic preparation of the nanoparticles, activation control of dendritic cells, immune function control, and in vivo application for various vaccination systems. The second type of control, that of cell–cell interaction, is important for tissue engineering in order to develop three-dimensional cellular constructs. To achieve in vitro engineering of three-dimensional human tissue constructs, cell–cell interaction must be controlled in three dimensions, but typical biological cell manipulation technique cannot accomplish this task. An engineered cell manipulation technique is necessary. In this book the authors describe the fabrication of nanofilms onto cell surfaces, development of three-dimensional cellular multilayers, and various applications of the cellular multilayers as three-dimensional human models. This important work will be highly informative for researchers and students in the fields of materials science, polymer science, biomaterials, medicinal science, nanotechnology, biotechnology, and biology.

Description : Unlike most t'ai chi books, which focus strictly on how to do the t'ai chi forms, T'ai Chi as a Path of Wisdom presents a personal, practical view of this intriguing martial art. Lehrhaupt shares illuminating stories from her own life and the lives of her students that show how t'ai chi can be a vehicle for profound self-discovery and spiritual growth. In learning to master each body posture, t'ai chi students often confront self-doubt, frustration, and the desire to compete and compare themselves to others—problems that also arise in daily life. Lehrhaupt shows how these and other obstacles provide valuable opportunities to deepen awareness and recognize the striking continuities between practice and everyday life. Each section of the book includes practical exercises designed to enhance students' understanding of t'ai chi movements, and a helpful appendix answers many frequently asked questions about t'ai chi training such as how to find a teacher and how to balance practice with family life. Full of useful insights and guidance, T'ai Chi as a Path of Wisdom will be a valuable companion for all students of this increasingly popular martial art.
