The Right Side of History Book Excerpt:

A #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! Human beings have never had it better than we have it now in the West. So why are we on the verge of throwing it all away? In 2016, New York Times bestselling author Ben Shapiro spoke at the University of California–Berkeley. Hundreds of police officers were required to protect his speech. What was so frightening about Shapiro? He came to argue that Western civilization is in the midst of a crisis of purpose and ideas; that we have let grievances replace our sense of community and political expediency limit our individual rights; that we are teaching our kids that their emotions matter more than rational debate; and that the only meaning in life is arbitrary and subjective. As a society, we are forgetting that almost everything great that has ever happened in history happened because of people who believed in both Judeo-Christian values and in the Greek-born power of reason. In The Right Side of History, Shapiro sprints through more than 3,500 years, dozens of philosophers, and the thicket of modern politics to show how our freedoms are built upon the twin notions that every human being is made in God’s image and that human beings were created with reason capable of exploring God’s world. We can thank these values for the birth of science, the dream of progress, human rights, prosperity, peace, and artistic beauty. Jerusalem and Athens built America, ended slavery, defeated the Nazis and the Communists, lifted billions from poverty, and gave billions more spiritual purpose. Yet we are in the process of abandoning Judeo-Christian values and Greek natural law, watching our civilization collapse into age-old tribalism, individualistic hedonism, and moral subjectivism. We believe we can satisfy ourselves with intersectionality, scientific materialism, progressive politics, authoritarian governance, or nationalistic solidarity. We can’t. The West is special, and in The Right Side of History, Ben Shapiro bravely explains how we have lost sight of the moral purpose that drives each of us to be better, the sacred duty to work together for the greater good,.

Summary of the Right Side of History by Ben Shapiro Book Excerpt:

THE RIGHT SIDE OF HISTORY posits that It was the intersection of reason, logic, religion and science, based on Judeo-Christian values and on the Greek power of reason and adherence to natural law, that created the successful civilization that the West became. But today, we appear to be abandoning these ancient roots upon which the prosperity of the West is founded. Why? Today Western civilization is in the midst of a crisis of identity, of ideas and of purpose. We now turn our backs on the Judeo-Christian values and on the Greek-born power of reason and natural law upon which all of our progress, peace and prosperity began and are founded. We are now replacing those time-tested ancient foundations with a new-found intersectionality, authoritarianism, nationalism and scientific materialism, etc. But can these new "foundations" suffice to ensure the survival of the West and to maintain the progress and prosperity of the West? Ben Shapiro warns that the answer to this question is a resounding "NO!" And he navigates us through thousands of years of human history, profound thinking and deep philosophies to demonstrate to us why. In the end, he softly suggests that to reverse our current misplacements and misadventures, we need to simply restore personal responsibility in our families, that is, teach our children proper values (Judeo-Christian and Greek-founded values). This book is majorly non- political but it is historically and philosophically deep and intense. It is a prophetic warning to the West, a veritable tour de force! And this is a very well-written summary and guide to the book. Indeed, this summary should be required reading for every American. YOU really need to read it! Do not hesitate! Do not procrastinate! Reactionary Democracy Book Excerpt:

Democracy must be anti-racist. Any less is cowardly. Any less is reactionary. Democracy is not necessarily progressive, and will only be if we make it so. What Mondon and Winter call 'reactionary democracy' is the use of the concept of democracy and its associated understanding of the power to the people (demos cratos) for reactionary ends. The resurgence of racism, populism and the far right is not the result of popular demands as we are often told. It is rather the logical conclusion of the more or less conscious manipulation by the elite of the concept of 'the people' and the working class to push reactionary ideas. These narratives place racism as a popular demand, rather than as something encouraged and perpetuated by elites, thus exonerating those with the means to influence and control public discourse through the media in particular. This in turn has legitimised the far right, strengthened its hand and compounded inequalities. These actions diverts us away from real concerns and radical alternatives to the current system. Through a careful and thorough deconstruction of the hegemonic discourse currently preventing us from thinking beyond the liberal vs populist dichotomy, this book develops a better understanding of the systemic forces underpinning our current model and its exploitative and discriminatory basis. The book shows us that the far right would not have been able to achieve such success, either electorally or ideologically, were it not for the help of elite actors (the media, politicians and academics). While the far right is a real threat and should not be left off the hook, the authors argue that we need to shift the responsibility of the situation towards those who too often claim to be objective, and even powerless, bystanders despite their powerful standpoint and clear capacity to influence the agenda, public discourse, and narratives, particularly when they platform and legitimise racist and far right ideas and actors.

Reconsidering Reparations Book Excerpt:

"Christopher Columbus' voyage changed the world forever because the era of racial slavery and colonialism that it started built the world in the first place. The irreversible environmental damage of history's first planet-sized political and economic system is responsible for our present climate crisis. Reparations calls for us to make the world over again: this time, justly. The project of reparations and racial justice in the 21st century must take climate justice head on. The book develops arguments about the role of racial capitalism in global politics, addresses other views of reparations, and summarizes perspectives on environmental racism"--

The Rise of Post Modern Conservatism Book Excerpt:

This book is designed as a timely analysis of the rise of post-modern conservatism in many Western countries across the globe. It provides a theoretical overview of post-modernism, why post-modern conservatism emerged, what distinguishes it from other variants of conservatism and differing political doctrines, and how post-modern conservatism governs in practice. First developing a unique genealogy of conservative thought, arguing that the historicist and irrationalist strains of conservatism were ripe for mutation into post-modern form under the right social and cultural conditions, then providing a new unique theoretical framework to describe the conditions for the emergence of post-modern conservatism, The Rise of Post-modern Conservatism applies its theoretical framework to a concrete analysis of the politics of the day. Ultimately, it aims to help us understand the emergence and rise of identity oriented alt right movements and their “populist” spokesmen particularly in the United States, the United Kingdom, Hungary, Poland, and now Italy.

That s Not Funny Book Excerpt:

A rousing call for liberals and progressives to pay attention to the emergence of right-wing comedy and the political power of humor. "Why do conservatives hate comedy? Why is there no right-wing Jon Stewart?" These sorts of questions launch a million tweets, a thousand op-eds, and more than a few scholarly analyses. That's Not Funny argues that it is both an intellectual and politically strategic mistake to assume that comedy has a liberal bias. Matt Sienkiewicz and Nick Marx take readers––particularly self-described liberals––on a tour of contemporary conservative comedy and the "right-wing comedy complex." In That's Not Funny, "complex" takes on an important double meaning. On the one hand, liberals have developed a social-psychological complex—it feels difficult, even dangerous, to acknowledge that their political opposition can produce comedy. At the same time, the right has been slowly building up a comedy-industrial complex, utilizing the humorous, irony-laden media strategies of liberals such as Jon Stewart, Samantha Bee, and John Oliver to garner audiences and supporters. Right-wing comedy has been hiding in plain sight, finding its way into mainstream conservative media through figures ranging from Fox News's Greg Gutfeld to libertarian podcasters like Joe Rogan. That's Not Funny taps interviews with conservative comedians and observations of them in action to guide readers through media history, text, and technique. You will find many of these comedians utterly appalling, some surprisingly funny, and others just plain weird. They are all, however, culturally and politically relevant—the American right is attempting to seize spaces of comedy and irony previously held firmly by the left. You might not like this brand of humor, but you can't ignore it.

Self Examination Book Excerpt:

Christianity, or what is called Christianity, conforms largely to Western humanism. Together and individually, believers draw the whole of the West into themselves, accommodating its dreams, loves, greeds, and hurts, as well as its indulgences, contradictions, perversions, and stupidities. All who identify corporately and personally as Christian commit themselves to this world conformity. The fMRI-like files in the first part of Self-Examination may please you, even polish your self-esteem. This whole system of pictures may displease you. But each analysis of the West scrutinizes all church people, the whole gazing, staring intensely back into you. This Self-Examination therefore is about dispassionate self-examination—you peering sharply and persistently into your Westernizing soul, daringly exposing its innermost workings. You thus see in yourselves all the errors of imperialism and racism, including injuries to minority people; these you will own, plus sharing in the responsibilities for mammonism. You thus will see your stewardship, or lack thereof, of the environment. Westerners please the powers of the age; to make yourselves look good, you justify yourselves in the presence of the Western gods and goddesses. By living the standards of the West, you are good for a purpose; you live and work to make your self-esteem glow, and thereby you please the current deities, and in this paradox you still identify as Christian.

Philosophy and the Climate Crisis Book Excerpt:

This book explores how the history of philosophy can orient us to the new reality brought on by the climate crisis. If we understand the climate crisis as a deeply existential one, it can help to examine the way past philosophers responded to similar crises in their times. This book explores five past crises, each involving a unique form of collective trauma. These events—war, occupation, exile, scientific revolution and political revolution—inspired the philosophers to remake the whole world in thought, to construct a metaphysics. Williston distills a key intellectual innovation from each metaphysical system: • That political power must be constrained by knowledge of the climate system (Plato) • That ethical and political reasoning must be informed by care or love of the ecological whole (Augustine) • That we must enhance the design of the technosphere (Descartes) • That we must conceive the Earth as an internally complex system (Spinoza) • And that we must grant rights to anyone or anything—ultimately the Earth system itself—whose vital interests are threatened by the effects of climate change (Hegel). Philosophy and the Climate Crisis will be of great interest to students and scholars of climate change, environmental philosophy and ethics and the environmental humanities.

The Kids Are All Left Book Excerpt:

A brewing generational shift is about to change politics—and our country—forever. A demographic apocalypse is coming for the Republican Party. The surge in young voters for Biden in 2020 was only the beginning. Not only do they overwhelmingly favor the left, but the margins are at such an unprecedented and overwhelming scale that these voters are poised to end the partisan gridlock that has characterized politics for over thirty years. In The Kids Are All Left, political scientist David Faris proves beyond any doubt that this isn't just a typical generational trend that will even out over time and explores the policy transformations that young Americans will pursue. He offers hope for an escape from the political stalemate that has twice this century sent the loser of the popular vote to the White House, but he is realistic about the institutional obstacles that stand between voters and true majority rule. The result is a first look at what America[1] n politics will look like in the 21st century.

Steering Human Evolution Book Excerpt:

Humanity must steer its evolution. As human knowledge moves a step ahead of Darwin’s theories, this book presents the emergence of human-made meta-evolution shaping our alternative futures. This novel process poses fateful challenges to humanity, which require regulation of emerging science and technology which may endanger the future of our species. However, to do so successfully, a novel ‘humanity-craft’ has to be developed; main ideologies and institutions need redesign; national sovereignty has to be limited; a decisive global regime becomes essential; some revaluation of widely accepted norms becomes essential; and a novel type of political leader, based on merit in addition to public support, is urgently needed. Taking into account the strength of nationalism and vested interests, it may well be that only catastrophes will teach humanity to metamorphose into a novel epoch without too high transition costs. But initial steps, such as United Nation reforms, are urgent in order to contain calamities and may soon become feasible. Being both interdisciplinary and based on personal experience of the author, this book adds up to a novel paradigm on steering human evolution. It will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of modern history, evolution sciences, future studies, political science, philosophy of action, and science and technology. It will also be of wide appeal to the general reader anxious about the future of life on Earth. Comments on the Corona pandemic add to the book’s concrete significance.

the Artist Book Excerpt:

You matter because you were made. Created, on purpose, in the very image of God. And that’s not just a slogan. That’s something author Matt Loveland set out to prove. You believe the world was created. At least, statistically you do. According to a 2018-2019 PEW Research poll, 96% of Americans believe in a higher power. But whether it’s parents, school, or the media, 100% of us are taught from an early age that faith is the trade of the superstitious; that science and Atheism are one in the same. Matt came to a faith in Christ because he was turned off by the irrationality of Atheism; he was drawn in by the logic and reason of God. In the Artist: Faith, Science, and the Rest of Us, he takes readers along his journey to discover a surprisingly biblical truth that the majority of Christians believe and at the same time feel they lack the tools to express: that God guided our evolution, on purpose, and for a reason: because He loves us. And He loves you.

The Quotable Voltaire Book Excerpt:

The author of more than 2,000 books and pamphlets, Voltaire (François-Marie Arouet, 1694-1778) was one of the most prolific writers of the eighteenth century, and also one of the wittiest and most insightful. This unique collection of over 800 of Voltaire’s wisest passages and choicest bons mots runs the gamut on topics from adultery to Zoroaster, in both English and French. Drawing from a wide range of his publications, private letters, and remarks recorded by his contemporaries, The Quotable Voltaire includes material never before gathered in a single volume. English translations appear alongside the original French, and each quote is thoroughly indexed and referenced, with page numbers for both the first known publication edition of each entry and the most recent edition of Voltaire’s works. The book also features over 400 quotes about Voltaire, including commentary by eighteenth-century luminaries like Samuel Johnson, Catherine the Great, Casanova, and John Adams, as well as an eclectic assortment of modern-day personages ranging from Winston Churchill and Jorge Luis Borges to Mae West and Mike Tyson. Lavishly illustrated with nearly three dozen images of Voltaire-related art, this collection opens with a scholarly essay that recounts the great man’s life and reflects on his outsized influence on Western culture. Whether you are a Voltaire scholar or a neophyte, The Quotable Voltaire is the perfect introduction to a brilliant mind.
