Description : People love to hear the familiar Christmas stories during the season of Advent. No matter how creative one might be with different approaches to Christmas preaching, for most it just doesn't seem the same without angels and shepherds and magi, without Mary and Joseph (and even wicked king Herod), and certainly without the child born in the manger! This leaves the preacher with four chapters of the scriptures, Matthew 1-2 and Luke 1-2, as the primary resources for the season. Preaching from these chapters for three years, much less thirty years, is a challenge. We are either left with preaching the same sermons, sometimes under different titles, or we need to think about Christmas preaching more creatively. The Birth of Jesus the Messiah combines thematic commentary on the birth stories of Matthew and Luke with preaching and teaching ideas. Biblical themes flowing through each birth narrative, set forth by the Gospel writers themselves, inspire fresh sermon series ideas for the Advent season. Over thirty sermon series ideas include "In the Shadow of Herod," "Advent at Risk: Women in Jesus' Genealogy," "Covenants for Christmas," "Luke's Symphony," "Angels in Advent: Don't Be Afraid." Engage with The Birth of Jesus the Messiah as a fresh starting point and annual resource for planning your Advent and Christmas preaching.

Description : The writer of this book attemps to prove that Jesus of Nazareth was tge Messiah or Christ at his birth, on Palm Sunday, and on Easter Sunday. The Old Testamwnt prophecies that Jesus Christ as to be born of a virgin in Bethlehem and that he would be taken to Egypt by his parent for few years were fulfilled. There were some prophecies about his ministry, that he would preach the gospel to the poor and neglected, heal all sorts of diseases, use parables in his preaching, enlighten some and would offend some, etc. all these prophecies were fulfilled. The prophecy about his royal welcome on a colt in Jerusalem, the prophecies about his death and rulers of the land, he would be ill-treated by Jewish religious authorities and sufferings and that he would be resurrected on the third day were all fulfilled. In short, all were fulfilled. Therefore, Jesus of Nazareth was undoubtedly the anticipated Messiah or Christ.

Description : The impulse to publish these sermons came to me after I had successfully published my book, For Our Age of Anxiety, based on the Sermon on the Mount. All of these sermons were first written and preached while I was pastor of the Seven Hills Baptist Church in Owensboro, Kentucky where I served for thirty-four years. As I considered the idea of publishing a follow up book of sermons from the remaining chapters of Matthew, I went to my files and began the process of selecting the sermons to be included. After I had selected these sermons, I began to see that they could be put together under the theme of a portrait of Jesus. This book features sermons that focus on the early days of the ministry of Jesus particularly as they related to the ministry of John the Baptist. They also shed some light on the temptations of Jesus in the desert, on the call of those who would be his first disciples, and what is involved in being a disciple of Jesus then and now. Some of the sermons are based on the miracles of Jesus, thus revealing the compassion of Jesus. These sermons also deal with the idea of the Kingdom of God, showing some of the principles and characteristics of the Kingdom. The last two sermons are about the person of Jesus. It is my hope that these sermons will indeed help the reader to draw his or her own mental and spiritual portrait of Jesus.

Description : Traditional preaching, along with the mainline churches in which it has been most prevalent over the years, is losing its appeal for growing numbers of people who are caught up in the dangers and confusion of our fragmented world. Many are hungering for a more powerful and challenging message rooted in Jesus' Life and teachings, seeking clues about how to live faithfully amid the destructive social and personal pressures created by our nation's exploitation of its position of global dominance. The sermons in this volume emerge from the conversion story of a Southern white, Presbyterian pastor who was transformed by the civil rights struggle and who has chosen to live on the boundary between mainstream and marginalized people. Rooted in an understanding that Jesus' gospel message is subversive of many of the dominant values and practices of our culture and our world today, they are intended to be "disturbing" sermons. But they disturb for the sake of healing and hope, always pointing to Jesus' good news of the liberating possibility of beloved community, inclusive of us all. "Z Holler's collection of sermons, Jesus Radical Message, are exegetical models, faithful to their texts, but highly disturbing. He has taken familiar stories of Jesus and let them speak to modern readers as they spoke to the disciples of old, threatening their prejudices and challenging their deepest commitments. They grow out of Holler's own experience-as all good sermons should do-are well-written, and to the point."---Charles Consar Columbia Theological Seminary "I share with my friend and elder Z Holler two deep convictions: that the gospels call us to radical discipleship, and that the Beloved Community Center of Greensboro is truly carrying on the work and witness of Martin Luther King. Z's journey of following Jesus and standing in solidarity with the BCC is remarkable for a white southern preacher of his generation, reminiscent of Clarence Jordan and Will Campbell. His memoir and sermons testify to the wound of reacism, and to how gospel faith changes personal and political geographies."---Ched Myers Bartimaeus Cooperative Ministers "Having been associated with Z Holler on a daily basis for many years, I have been impressed by his interest in and compassion for those in our society for whom the social, legal, and economic systems were a burden instead of offering help and deliverance. He worked diligently to understand their life situations and to content those who controlled the systems. His vision of justice for all was always clear and his ability to articulate that vision is a challenge to any one of us who dare preach sermons based on the person and work of Jesus Christ."---William A. Stewart Minister in the Presbyteian Church (USA) "With a heart trained by scripture, Z Holler listens to the pain of the oppressed. Bearing the particular burden of white Southerners, he has painstakingly translated the pain of racial and class injustice into these sermons along with the dangerous memory of Jesus the Radical Messiah and Z's particular rendering of his demanding call to discipleship. Fresh and urgent, here is a wonderful gift to the discipleship movement-inspiration to engage the word in all times and places."---Revs. Murphy Davis and Eduard Loring Open Door Community, Atlanta, CA "Jesus was and is very radical as he proclaimed and gave witness to the in-breaking of God's Kingdom. Z Holler gives witness to the radical nature of Jesus' proclamation in these sermons with the aid of Scripture his own scholarship. For a taste and sample, read sermon number four, "Let us Go Across to the Other Side." You will want more. The sermons are deep and require reflection. Share reflection in a group or meditate on one each morning, You will be challenged and fed."---Rt. Rev. A. C. Marble, Jr. Bishop of Mississippi, retired, 1993-2003 Biship Assisting, Diocese of North Carolina, 2004 Z Holler, a retired Presbyterian pastor, is a co-founder of the Beloved Community Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. He served as co-chair for the Greensboro Truth and Community Reconciliation Project

Description : "Jesus the Messiah" is a basic, non-technical introduction to the life of Christ, carefully tracing His life and works as evidence of the truth of His claims and of the firm convictions of the early Christians--an inspirational study of Christ's life. The author prefaces his work by admitting that "Many deny the possibility of writing a life of Jesus, and it must be conceded that no 'life' in the biographical sense can be written. It is impossible to produce a psychological study of Jesus. His developing awareness of messianic mission cannot be traced. This book presents an account of Jesus from the perspective of faith. It sees in His deeds and words evidence of the truth of His claims and of the firm convictions of the early Christians. . . . No one who reflects on His life and mission can fail to be affected by it, and in this sense the present study is in the nature of a personal testimony."
