This book offers advanced parallel and distributed algorithms and experimental laboratory prototypes of unconventional shortest path solvers. In addition, it presents novel and unique algorithms of solving shortest problems in massively parallel cellular automaton machines. The shortest path problem is a fundamental and classical problem in graph theory and computer science and is frequently applied in the contexts of transport and logistics, telecommunication networks, virtual reality and gaming, geometry, and social networks analysis. Software implementations include distance-vector algorithms for distributed path computation in dynamics networks, parallel solutions of the constrained shortest path problem, and application of the shortest path solutions in gathering robotic swarms. Massively parallel algorithms utilise cellular automata, where a shortest path is computed either via matrix multiplication in automaton arrays, or via the representation of data graphs in automaton lattices and using the propagation of wave-like patterns. Unconventional shortest path solvers are presented in computer models of foraging behaviour and protoplasmic network optimisation by the slime mould Physarum polycephalum and fluidic devices, while experimental laboratory prototypes of path solvers using chemical media, flows and droplets, and electrical current are also highlighted. The book will be a pleasure to explore for readers from all walks of life, from undergraduate students to university professors, from mathematicians, computers scientists and engineers to chemists and biologists.

Guide to Linux Networking and Security is a hands-on, practical guide that can be used to master Linux networking and security, in preparation for the Linux certification exams from SAIR/GNU and LPI. This book begins by introducing networking technologies and protocols, then moves into configuring a Linux network using a variety of command line and graphical utilities. Specific protocols and applications are covered in the networking chapters, including the r-utilities, NFS, Samba, and FTP, plus business-critical services such as e-mail, Web, and DNS. The second half of this book includes a discussion of security in the context of protecting business assets and user privacy, with emphasis on system administrator ethics. Cryptography and encrypted protocols lay a foundation for discussion of specific Linux security tools, including PAM, sudo, and GPG. User, file, and network security are covered. The network security discussion includes firewalls, VPNs, and utilities such as nmap, ethereal, and the SAINT profiling tool. Throughout, the book provides examples of sample commands and output, plus screen shots of related graphical utilities.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Second IFIP-TC6 Netw- king Conference, Networking 2002. Networking 2002 was sponsored bythe IFIP Working Groups 6.2, 6.3, and 6.8. For this reason the conference was structured into three tracks: i) Networking Technologies, Services, and Protocols, ii) Perf- mance of Computer and Communication Networks, and iii) Mobile and Wireless Communications. This year the conference received 314 submissions coming from 42 countries from all ?ve continents Africa (4), Asia (84), America (63), Europe (158), and Oc- nia (5). This represents a 50% increase in submissions over the ?rst conference, thus indicating that Networking is becoming a reference conference for wor- wide researchers in the networking community. With so manypapers to choose from, the job of the Technical Program C- mittee, to provide a conference program of the highest technical excellence, was both challenging and time consuming. From the 314 submissions, we ?nallys- ected 82 full papers for presentation during the conference technical sessions. To give young researchers and researchers from emerging countries the oppor- nityto present their work and to receive useful feedback from participants, we decided to include two poster sessions during the technical program. Thirty-one short papers were selected for presentation during the poster sessions. The conference technical program was split into three days, and included, in addition to the 82 refereed contributions, 5 invited papers from top-level rese- chers in the networking community.

IP is clearly emerging as the networking paradigm for the integration of the tr- ?c ?ows generated by a variety of new applications (IP telephony, multimedia multicasting, e-business, ...), whose performance requirements may be extremely di?erent. This situation has generated a great interest in the development of te- niques for the provision of quality of service (QoS) guarantees in IP networks. Two proposals have already emerged from the IETF groups IntServ and Di?- Serv, but research and experiments are continuing, in order to identify the most e?ective architectures and protocols. The Italian Ministry for University and Scienti?c Research has been funding a research program on these topics, named “Techniques for quality of service guarantees in multiservice telecommunication networks” or MQOS for short, in the years 1999 and 2000. At the end of its activity, the MQOS program has organized in Rome (Italy) in January 2001 the International Workshop on QoS in Multiserevice IP N- works (QoS-IP 2001), for the presentation of high-quality recent research results on QoS in IP networks, and the dissemination of the most relevant research results obtained within the MQOS program.
