The Sisters Mallone Book Excerpt:

The Mallone sisters look Irish, but don’t let their blue eyes fool you. “It’s all in how you say it,” their grandma Anona proudly says. “Ma-llone is Irish. Mal-lon-e is Italian.” Growing up Italian in the 1920s, in Hell’s Kitchen, an Irish enclave, requires toughness, thrift, and a calculating mind―even for the three beautiful Mallone sisters. And when their baby sister Gracie is swept off her feet by no-good Frankie Merelli, Helen and Mary will do anything to make sure Grace gets the life she deserves, even if that means going after her husband… The Sisters Mallone is a black comedy about the power of sisterhood and the importance of family―and family connections. Through irrepressible characters, and infectious and suspenseful writing, The Sisters Mallone reveals the American immigrant’s dream―with a twist.

The Sisters of Summit Avenue Book Excerpt:

From the bestselling author of Mrs. Poe and Twain’s End comes a “poignant, beautifully rendered story of two sisters who find the courage to reclaim their bond after years of misunderstandings and heartbreak” (Melanie Benjamin, New York Times bestselling author) during the Great Depression. 1934. Ruth has been single-handedly raising four young daughters and running her family’s Indiana farm for eight long years, ever since her husband, John, was infected by the infamous “sleeping sickness” devastating families across the country. If only she could trade places with her older sister, June: blonde and beautiful, married to a wealthy doctor, living in a mansion in St. Paul. And June has a coveted job, too, as one of “the Bettys,” the perky recipe developers who populate the famous Betty Crocker test kitchen. But these gilded trappings hide sorrows: she has borne no children. And the man she loves more than anything belongs to Ruth. When the two sisters reluctantly reunite after a long estrangement, June’s bitterness about her sister’s betrayal sets into motion a confrontation that’s been years in the making. And their mother, Dorothy, who’s brought the two of them together, has her own dark secrets, which might blow up the fragile peace she hopes to restore between her daughters. An emotional journey of redemption, inner strength, and the ties that bind families together, for better or worse, The Sisters of Summit Avenue is a moving and heartfelt tribute to mothers, daughters, and sisters everywhere.

Gina wants to be a star of the theatre, Mary-Kate wants to find a husband, and Bridget, shy, gentle Bridget, just wants to escape the Troubles. The Sister s Story Book Excerpt:

In 1883 a tornado devastated the frontier town of Rochester, Minnesota--with extraordinary consequences. Responding to the tragedy, a group of Catholic Sisters built a hospital in a comfield and asked a family of doctors to staff it. A handshake, not a legal document, sealed the agreement and symbolized the mutual trust that continues today between the world-acclaimed hospital and Mayo Clinic. This book tells the human story behind Saint Marys Hospital founded by the Sisters of Saint Francis and their partnership with Dr. William Worrall Mayo and his surgeon sons, Drs. Will and Charlie Mayo.

Sisters and the English Household Book Excerpt:

Sisters and the English Household revalues unmarried adult sisters in nineteenthcentury English literature as positive figures of legal and economic autonomy representing productive labor in the domestic space. As a crucial site of contested values, the adult unmarried sister carries the discursive weight of sustained public debates about ideals of domesticity in nineteenth-century England. Engaging scholarly histories of the family, and providing a detailed account of the 70-year Marriage with a Deceased Wife’s Sister controversy, Anne Wallace traces an alternative domesticity anchored by adult sibling relations through Dorothy Wordsworth’s journals; William Wordsworth’s poetry; Mary Lamb’s essay “On Needle-Work”; and novels by Jane Austen, Elizabeth Gaskell, Charles Dickens, Dinah Mulock Craik and George Eliot. Recognizing adult sibling relationships, and the figure of the adult unmarried sibling in the household, as primary and generative rather than contingent and dependent, and recognizing material economy and law as fundamental sources of sibling identity, Sisters and the English Household resets the conditions for literary critical discussions of sibling relations in nineteenth-century England.

The Kentucky Encyclopedia Book Excerpt:

The Kentucky Encyclopedia's 2,000-plus entries are the work of more than five hundred writers. Their subjects reflect all areas of the commonwealth and span the time from prehistoric settlement to today's headlines, recording Kentuckians' achievements in art, architecture, business, education, politics, religion, science, and sports. Biographical sketches portray all of Kentucky's governors and U.S. senators, as well as note congressmen and state and local politicians. Kentucky's impact on the national scene is registered in the lives of such figures as Carry Nation, Henry Clay, Louis Brandeis, and Alben Barkley. The commonwealth's high range from writers Harriette Arnow and Jesse Stuart, reformers Laura Clay and Mary Breckinridge, and civil rights leaders Whitney Young, Jr., and Georgia Powers, to sports figures Muhammad Ali and Adolph Rupp and entertainers Loretta Lynn, Merle Travis, and the Everly Brothers. Entries describe each county and county seat and each community with a population above 2,500. Broad overview articles examine such topics as agriculture, segregation, transportation, literature, and folklife. Frequently misunderstood aspects of Kentucky's history and culture are clarified and popular misconceptions corrected. The facts on such subjects as mint juleps, Fort Knox, Boone's coonskin cap, the Kentucky hot brown, and Morgan's Raiders will settle many an argument. For both the researcher and the more casual reader, this collection of facts and fancies about Kentucky and Kentuckians will be an invaluable resource.

Relationships Between Young Sisters as Revealed in Their Overt Responses Book Excerpt:

"In the present monograph Dr. McFarland has reported a first study of the observed responses of young sisters to each other in the home situation. Her observational notes have been supplemented by reports of parents, records of health, tests of intelligence, and case study material. The observations of the two sisters of each pair were made simultaneously in order that relations between responses might be studied directly. The method of recording developed for this purpose is a new one in social studies and should prove useful for further investigations of relationships. In the analysis of data Dr. McFarland has considered the types of activities in which the sisters engaged: social, parallel, and individual. The social activities have then been examined to determine the kinds of interactions which occurred: conflicts, rivalry, direction, submission and resistance, sympathy, protection, helping, giving and lending, affection. In the discussion of each topic, the author has presented not only the statistical analysis of her data but has included, also, first-hand material from the records which give a basis for interpretation and insight into the findings. Perhaps the greatest contribution which this study makes is the picture it gives of the complexity of human social behavior. What type of response will emerge at any time is difficult to predict. Elements within the situation, the strength of drives within either child, the physical condition of the children as well as the more stable personality trends and fundamental relations between the sisters--all have an influence. Herein lies the difficulty for the child as well as for the adult who would study and guide him. Life would be reasonably simple if one could have a straightforward relationship with one's sister, even if that relationship were one of dislike and competition. But it is just because one has many pulls in different directions and many mood swings that relations become complex, involved, and conflicting. Studies of this type may gradually lead us to understand human relationships and to build a basis for better guidance of children's experiences with their peers both at home and at school"--Preface.
