Description : Excerpt from Gregg Speed Studies The intensification of the course of study in shorthand departments of both public and private schools has resulted in a happy welding of theory with speed practice. This has meant a "scrapping" of the old methods of instruction which were based upon the idea of a distinct separation of the theory work from the advanced. Speed studies is intended to give practical effect to this modern tendency. It is an effort to put into teachable form the principles outlined by me in two addresses which were delivered before educational associations on "The Application of Modern Efficiency Principles to the Teaching of Shorthand." While it breaks new ground so far as shorthand textbooks and practice books are concerned, everything contained in it has been proved by the acid test of my own classroom experience. In planning the "studies" preceding each section of the book, the method adopted by tho great industries in developing efficiency has been followed. Just as the best method of performing any mechanical operation is first established in a factory by scientific test, and each new workman is required to conform to that method, so in this plan of teaching advanced shorthand, we endeavor from the first to teach tho student the best possible way of writing shorthand. He is taught the correct posture for writing, the correct manner of holding his pen, the correct manner of turning the pages, the quickest and easiest way to make the various combinations, the importance of compactness in writing to make rapid transitions between the forms, and to eliminate what Herbert Spencer called "unregistered movements of the pen." An examination of the book will, I believe, disclose many notable contributions to the pedagogy of shorthand; but the two outstanding features are: First, the presentation of practice material in its shorthand form, instead of in print as is done in most dictation books. Second, the development of a large and varied writing vocabulary through the unique plan of incorporating vocabulary drills with the work in dictation. The first of these features can hardly be overemphasized. Much observation in teaching shorthand has convinced me that the best results are obtained through the reading of shorthand. The reasons may be summarized briefly: 1. The student is more interested in reading shorthand than in reading print, and interest in a subject is of the first importance in securing results. 2. As he may be called upon to read the shorthand notes at any point in the assignment, he will naturally give more time to preparing himself to read fluently. Description : Excerpt from The Phonographic Teacher: A Guide to a Practical Acquaintance With the Art of Phonetic Shorthand There has hitherto existed among all nations, great disparity, in point of facility and dispatch, between the usual methods of communicating thought - spealdng and writing: the former has always been comparatively rapid, easy, and delightful; the latter tedious, cumbrous, and wearisome. It is most strange that we who excel our progenitors so far in science, literature, and com merce, should continue to use (with but very slight changes in the forms of the letters, ) the mode of writing which they have handed down to us. Our usual method of communication, by its com plexity, obliges the readiest hand to spend at least six hours in writing what can be spoken in one. Why should we not attempt to simplify our written characters, and make them correspond, in some degree, to the simplicity of spoken sounds? The method of writing here presented, after having been subjected to the ordeal of several years' practice, by thousands of persons, has proved itself to be free from the cumbrousness complained of; and, while it can be written with fluency and ease, it may be read after any length of time with rapidity and accuracy: it is a system of exhibiting speech on paper, by signs closely resembling, in sim plicity, the sounds they represent. Description : Excerpt from Pitman's Speed Practice Book Presumably the first, the second, and the last of these elements receive their proper consideration and attention as the theory of the system is studied. Lack of sufficient material in easily-accessible and readily-used form which would serve to develop the other ele ments, has been keenly felt by teachers of shorthand in general. To meet their needs, as well as those of the high-speed aspirant, this volume has been compiled with no attempt to grade the selec tions as to difficulty, firmly believing they will serve equally well for the beginner as well as for the advanced writer. As a further aid to the teacher, the counting arrangement and indication will prove of inestimable value. The articles contained in this work have been culled from the columns of the daily newspaper, periodicals, magazines, books and other forms of publications and due acknowledgment is given. Description : Excerpt from Haven's 300-Words-a-Minute Shorthand Lessons: Presenting in Twelve Lessons, Within the Comprehension of a Child, Every Important Phonographic Device Known to the Most Skillful Shorthand Writers of the World and of All Systems Aside from the ordinary facilities requisite for learning or teaching the art, there are three absolute necessities to a practical system of Short-hand writing. They are: speed, legibility, and an almost entire absence of arbitrary rules and characters. Without the latter, years - long years - of hard study and harder practice, combined with an exceedingly retentive memory, is the price the learner pays for his Skill. Hence, it is simply fallacious to acquire Stenography, an art that is wholly arbitrary in its character, and even though it may be arranged by a modern author, is as antiquated as many Indian relics, and bears the same relation to phonography that the Olden time scythe bears to the latest improved mowing machine. Description : Excerpt from The Allen Method of Shorthand, Taught by N. Cleveland, Albany, N. Y By this plan the work of getting speed, as well as learning the theory of phonography, is divided into short and easy portions, and a task that is impossible to accomplish, if attempted all at once, can be completed without trouble and in a short time. All large under takings are done little by little, piece by piece, and that is the only true way of learning shorthand. The old methods partially adopt this plan in teaching theory, but ignore it in speed practice, and suffer the consequences. The Allen Method makes use of it all through the course. Description : Excerpt from McEwan's Easy Shorthand: The Wonder Manual Ninety per cent of shorthand writers are incompetent. Even that astonishing percentage would be higher but for those wise teachers who know the value of geo metric and shaded shorthand too well to be misled into the use of light line and one slope systems. To a certain extent I am responsible for the early adoption of that stenographic leper, one -slope, light line, non-position shorthand. In the eighties in my school. In London I introduced a then new style of shorthand that seemed to be very easy to learn. I adopted it on condition that certain improvements were made. As the result of the immediate enormous sale induced by my recommendation the printing presses were kept working night and day; they could not be stopped long enough for my improvements to be inserted, and, ex cept in my own school, they were never actually put into practice. Description : Excerpt from Practical Shorthand: A Complete and Systematic Exposition of Phonography, Based on the Pitmanic Alphabet We have endeavored to make a complete book, mechanic ally as nearly perfect as possible, scientifically accurate in all its technical statements of principles, and at the same time, to present those principles so plainly as to smooth the way to an easy and progressive mastery of the science, from its simplest elements to the most complex forms used by expert writers. This book is the result of many years' actual experience in teaching and reporting. We are confident its simple and direct methods will make better stenographers, effect a great saving of time and effort on the part of both teacher and stu dent, and render quite unnecessary the enormous outlay of study and blind practice required by the older books. Description : Excerpt from Eclectic Shorthand: Writing by Principles Instead of Arbitrary Signs This system of shorthand writing has been before the public long enough to either demonstrate or refute the claim that it is the easiest to learn, the simplest in struct ure, the briefest, and yet the fullest phonetic writing of the language that has been devised, and it still lives. Its development has been the result of a single seed thought. In 1878, while teaching the alphabet of Taki graphy, I became strongly impressed with the fact that there was no law of motion in the phonographic alphabets, such as in the written Roman alphabet, and set about seeking a more facile and cursive set of characters to represent the alphabet for purposes of shorthand writing. In writing the Roman alphabet, the motion of. The pen is upward and downward alternately, except an occasional stroke to the right, which always occurs after an upward stroke. Hence the movement of the hand is only upward, downward, and to the right, and the mental action in writing, after a little practice, becomes very easy. Description : Excerpt from Complete Manual of the Beale Shorthand (Simplified Phonography) For the Use of Schools or Teachers, and Specially Adapted to Mail-or Self-Instruction The present edition, therefore, which it is believed will be the unchanged standard in the future, differs from preceding editions only in the arrangement and practice matter. The principles, with the exception of a few very slight changes, made only for the purpose of entire uni formity, remain the same. Hence feeling that there is little to be said beyond the expression of the belief that the chooser ot this system will make no mistake in the selection, the author bespeaks from those into whose hands this book may come, only such favor as its merits, after thorough knowledge of the system, may justify. Description : Excerpt from The Measurement of Achievement in Shorthand: A Dissertation Submitted to the Board of University Studies of the Johns Hopkins University in Conformity With the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, 1922 During the last fifteen years there has been developing in university schools of education and in the practice of leading educators in the field, what might be spoken of as a movement for measurement in education. Teachers and schools have always felt the necessity for some sort of measure of the results of the educational process. In the past we have attempted to measure school efficiency by means of examinations and teachers' marks. In recent years there has been a growing tendency on the part of educators to give up reliance upon examinations and teachers' marks, and to depend instead upon the results secured by the use of certain tests and scales that have been scientifically constructed. There are several types of evidence that teachers' marks have been inaccurate. Probably no one who has had several years or more of schooling will have any difficulty in calling to mind teachers who were known as hard or easy markers. We know full well that an examination paper in geometry marked 95 by one teacher, might be marked 65 by another. In fact, such a paper was, for the sake of the experiment, graded by 116 different teachers. One-third of them marked it at from 27 to 65, one-third between 65 and 75, while the remaining third of the teachers assigned to this paper marks ranging from 75 to 91. The extreme marks given to this paper were 27 and 91. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Description : Excerpt from Simplified Phonetic Shorthand: An American Exposition of the Isaac Pitman Phonography These Lessons are in complete accord with the latest Isaac Pitman Phonography and all the well-edited Pitman shorthand magazines. The simplest and most frequently-used principles are presented and applied first; the more difficult come later. No duplicate letters, or letters written upward and downward, are used until easy matter can be written with facility. No form once learned requires to be changed. The words practiced in the Theory Lessons are written in the same way when reporting. Position is taught from the first; but all words that are not con tractions are vocalized, in every Lesson, in order to facilitate progress. All contractions, not in conflict with principles learned, are used as soon as each principle has been explained and the Exercises practiced. Each Lesson occupies only one page, and no principle, except the halving, requires for its elucidation more than one Lesson. The first thirty Lessons, of one page each, clearly explain and fully illustrate, all the principles of Isaac Pitman's shorthand. The next forty Lessons contain Correspondence Speed Practice, with full instructions how to become successful amanuenses. The last thirty Lessons prepare for verbatim reporting, and furnish sufficient practice to enable students to become very fast writers. The Amanuenses' Speed Practice has never before been printed. It is the result of thirty years' teaching of the Isaac Pitman system. The Reporting Lessons and Instructions are the result of knowledge acquired through years of actual reporting work by a successful teacher. American teachers, with these Lessons, will produce faster and more accurate writers than was possible before in the same time. Quality, not quantity; simplicity, not complexity; business require ments, not philosophical dissertations, have been the great aim. The Pitman text-books are printed from engraved characters which no writer can conform to. These Lessons are reproduced from script executed by the senior shorthand instructor of the New York Business College, and are easily imitated by the student. Description : Excerpt from Strayer's Shorter Shorthand: A System of Shorthand That Can Be Learned Quickly, Written Rapidly, and Read Easily It is just the thing for the person who needs short hand for his own use in taking notes, making memoran dums, or in writing and rewriting sermons, editorials, magazine articles and the like. It is just the thing for the preacher, lawyer, editor, author, teacher, stu dent, etc., and it is just the thing for the person who wishes to fit himself quickly for an office position as stenographer or private secretary. It is just the thing for all of them, because it can be learned so quickly and read with such absolute certainty. Those are the two points in which it differs so radically from all that has ever before been offered to the public in the line of shorthand that it stands in a class by itself. The author confidently believes, and expects soon to have thousands of testimonials to prove, that the entire system can be learned in six weeks, or less time, by any intelligent person who will study and practice faithfully one hour each day, and if it can be learned in so short a time, it should be learned by every man, woman and child who can read and write, with a few exceptions.
