The War of Art Book Excerpt:

I turned to the second photograph. It was Guernica again. It was vandalized again, but this time by someone who had charitably done his handiwork on the photo instead of the picture itself. Now a speech cloud with a tail, like those used in comics, emanated from the pointed tongue of the horse that dominates the work's central panel. It spanned most of the painting in length, this time covering the mother's face and sparing the child's. It contained seven words, written calligraphically in red: Equestrians know I felt as if the espresso had exploded in my stomach, sending reconstituted coffee beans in all directions, like a napalm bomb... Murder. This is what little Marcel was telling me, not so subtly.

A History of the Laws of War Volume 2 Book Excerpt:

This unique new work of reference traces the origins of the modern laws of warfare from the earliest times to the present day. Relying on written records from as far back as 2400 BCE, and using sources ranging from the Bible to Security Council Resolutions, the author pieces together the history of a subject which is almost as old as civilisation itself. The author shows that as long as humanity has been waging wars it has also been trying to find ways of legitimising different forms of combatants and ascribing rules to them, protecting civilians who are either inadvertently or intentionally caught up between them, and controlling the use of particular classes of weapons that may be used in times of conflict. Thus it is that this work is divided into three substantial parts: Volume 1 on the laws affecting combatants and captives; Volume 2 on civilians; and Volume 3 on the law of arms control. This second book on civilians examines four different topics. The first topic deals with the targetting of civilians in times of war. This discussion is one which has been largely governed by the developments of technologies which have allowed projectiles to be discharged over ever greater areas, and attempts to prevent their indiscriminate utilisation have struggled to keep pace. The second topic concerns the destruction of the natural environment, with particular regard to the utilisation of starvation as a method of warfare, and unlike the first topic, this one has rarely changed over thousands of years, although contemporary practices are beginning to represent a clear break from tradition. The third topic is concerned with the long-standing problems of civilians under the occupation of opposing military forces, where the practices of genocide, collective punishments and/or reprisals, and rape have occurred. The final topic in this volume is about the theft or destruction of the property of the enemy, in terms of either pillage or the intentional devastation of the cultural property of the opposition. As a work of reference this set of three books is unrivalled, and will be of immense benefit to scholars and practitioners researching and advising on the laws of warfare. It also tells a story which throws fascinating new light on the history of international law and on the history of warfare itself.

Art and War in the Pacific World Book Excerpt:

"Recent years have witnessed a surge in interest the Pacific world as a hub for the global trade in art objects. Yet, the history of art and architecture has seldom reckoned with another profound aspect of the region's history: its exposure to global conflict. Art and War in the Pacific World provides a new view of the Pacific world, and of global artistic interaction, by exploring how the making, alteration, looting, and destruction of images, objects, buildings, and landscapes intersected with the exercise of force during the British and U.S. military incursions of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries"--Provided by publisher.

Advertisers at Work Book Excerpt:

“Conversations with some of the sharpest minds in advertising lead the reader gently into the heart of the business. A great read whether you’re starting out in advertising or simply want to pick up some tips from the greats.” —Mark Tungate, author of Adland: A Global History of Advertising and Branded Beauty: How Marketing Changed the Way We Look “In Advertisers at Work, Tracy Tuten conducts interviews with some of the ad world’s biggest players. The interviews—ranging from advertising legend Mike Hughes to leaders of the next generation like David Oakley and Susan Credle—reveal much about the nature of creativity and why we all respond to certain ads either with a laugh or a purchase. Tuten’s skillful questions also highlight how these men and women learned the craft, found mentors, and landed jobs doing things they 'didn’t know you could get paid to do.' They talk about successes and failures, their hopes and dreams, and the direction of the industry as we move into the age of social and branded media. If you are in the field of advertising or one of those people who often say, ‘Hey, did you see that commercial . . .,’ you’ll find Advertisers at Work a valuable addition to your bookshelf.” —John Sweeney, Distinguished Professor, School of Journalism University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill;Former Associate Creative Director, Foote, Cone & Belding In Advertisers at Work, readers will gain insights from the most interesting people working in the field of advertising today, told in their own words. Guided by interviewer Dr. Tracy Tuten, 18 advertising leaders share their favorite stories, debunk the myths of advertising, make predictions on the industry’s future, pay homage to the lions of the past, and offer insights into what it takes to win in the ad game today. Each chapter is devoted to one advertising executive, showcasing that person’s unique vision and perspective into the world of advertising. Who are these leaders? Talent, perseverance, creativity, and pure grit set these people apart—and that’s where their similarities end. With a mix of senior contributors and up-and-coming talent representing the creative crafts, media, planning, and account services from a variety of agencies and locales, this book pulls back the curtain and invites readers to live each leader’s experiences up close. They’ll learn from the advertisers at work. Every interview shows how advertising leaders have an impact on a day-to-day basis: charting strategy, making effective pitches, managing clients and key partners, calling in the creative muse, reading the public’s mood, developing the right mix of media to launch a campaign, or pouncing on opportunities the rest of us can’t see. The publication first elaborates on the Munich Agreement, mines, militias, military reconnaissance, objectives, necessity, government, and forces abroad, mercenaries, liberation movements, land warfare, intervention, international military force, indiscriminate attack, and the Kellogg-Briand Pact (1928). The text then ponders on humanitarian law and armed conflict, flags and uniform in wars, enemies and enemy subjects, disarming of belligerents by neutrals, demarcation line, deserters, economic warfare, combatants, contributions, and contraband. The book examines collective punishment, measures, security, and self-defense, boundary settlements between Germany and her western neighbor states after World War II, bombardment, armistice, arms control, Asama Maru incident, air warfare, and alliance. The text is a vital source of data for researchers interested in the use of force, war, and neutrality peace treaties.
