Description : Global Governance Enterprises focuses on a specific multi-sector collaboration—the formation of an entity that carries out global governance—providing a detailed analysis of the context of their emergence, as well as how they are created, managed, and sustained. Forrer considers the growing challenges to successful global governance and the role of multi-sector collaborations in overcoming these challenges, arguing that such partnerships should be considered successful only when they meet specific conditions that ensure they are “doing well” and “doing good.” By establishing a coherent framework to define global governance enterprises across a wide span of sectors, the book develops a strong theoretical foundation for this type of partnership and provides the reader with an understanding of the practical, operational realities of organizing, financing, and sustaining global governance enterprises. It includes a full section of case studies, ranging from healthcare to environmental organizations, providing practical insight into this form of governance and its function. This book should be on the shelf of any professional or student interested in global governance, public–private partnerships, or public management.

Description : Pattern recognition is a central topic in contemporary computer sciences, with continuously evolving topics, challenges, and methods, including machine learning, content-based image retrieval, and model- and knowledge-based - proaches, just to name a few. The Iberoamerican Congress on Pattern Recog- tion (CIARP) has become established as a high-quality conference, highlighting the recent evolution of the domain. These proceedings include all papers presented during the 15th edition of this conference, held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in November 2010. As was the case for previous conferences, CIARP 2010 attracted parti- pants from around the world with the aim of promoting and disseminating - going research on mathematical methods and computing techniques for pattern recognition, computer vision, image analysis, and speech recognition, as well as their applications in such diverse areas as robotics, health, entertainment, space exploration, telecommunications, data mining, document analysis, and natural language processing and recognition, to name only a few of them. Moreover, it provided a forum for scienti?c research, experience exchange, sharing new kno- edge and increasing cooperation between research groups in pattern recognition and related areas. It is important to underline that these conferences have contributed sign- icantly to the growth of national associations for pattern recognition in the Iberoamerican region, all of them as members of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR).

Description : The apostle Paul was a man of many journeys. We are usually familiar with the geographical ones he made in his own time. This volume traces others--Paul's journeys in our time, as he is co-opted or invited to travel (sometimes as abused slave, sometimes as trusted guide) with modern and recent Continental philosophers and political theorists. Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Benjamin; Taubes, Badiou, Zizek, and Agamben--Paul journeys here among the philosophers. In these essays you are invited to travel with them into the regions of philosophy, hermeneutics, political theory, and theology. You will certainly hear the philosophers speak. But Paul will not remain silent. Above the sounds of the journey his voice comes through, loud and clear.

Description : From its beginnings, Confucianism has vibrantly taught that each person is able to find the Way individually in service to the community and the world. John Berthrong’s comprehensive new work tells the story of the grand intellectual development of the Confucian tradition, revealing all the historical phases of Confucianism and opening the reader’s eyes to the often neglected gifts of scholars of the Han, T’ang, and the modern periods, as well as to the vast contributions of Korea and Japan. The author concludes his revelatory study with an examination of the contemporary renewal of the Confucian Way in East Asia and its spread to the West.

Description : Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount ends with the parable of the builders on rock or sand. Doing what Jesus asks results in building a life that endures; not doing it results in disaster. The choice is ours, and it’s a scary one. How can we read these words so that we can know what Jesus meant and do it? In this book, Scripture scholar Dennis Hamm takes an in-depth look at the Sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew and the Sermon on the Plain in the Gospel of Luke, paying special attention to the distinctive ways these two evangelists present and interpret Jesus’ teachings. Hamm helps us to hear Jesus’ words in their original cultural setting as well as in the context of the Old Testament and the Gospels. In doing so, he throws new light on these teachings and suggests what they mean for us today. This book is both informative and pastoral, helping us to realize that the “you” addressed by Jesus in the Sermon is not a lonely individual but a healed and praying community, and that the one we pray to is not a long-ago and faraway Jesus of Nazareth but our living Lord and Friend.

Description : A journey is a collaboration and culmination of many steps. Sometimes our steps move us forward or backwards. Sometimes we take steps to the left or to the right. Our goal should be that our steps move us toward a definite destination. We hope that our steps are taking us nearer to that which will make us stronger, better, or even be greater people. As our steps are crucial, our end point is as well. If we want to have the life that God has in store for us, we need to be walking toward Him daily. God has a life of peace and joy for us. Not problem free, but one of peace. Not without tribulations or trouble, but one of triumph. In order for us to possess this life, God has to be our end destination. He has to be the one that we are focusing and He has to be the one that we are depending upon. In order for us to grow in the Lord and step closer to Him, we must be intentional. It would be wonderful if we could just wake up and be spiritually stronger than we have ever been before. But that is not reality. We must be systematic and strategic if we are going to grow in the Lord. This book will help and lead you to grow spiritually. Jesus said, "If we are to follow Him, we are to take up our cross daily." One Step Closer is a tool that will not only strengthen us now it will impact our eternity.

Description : The title My Invention Testimony came from the journal I kept as I worked on my invention called "Food Separators." As I was being introduced to the world of inventions, I persevered through a lot of frustrations and hostile ordeals during my learning experiences. I've heard in several sermons from various pastors, including my own, that when one commits themselves to carry out an assignment for God, one would most likely experience an aloofness of family and friends. What a true statement! I did lose a closeness with my family, biological and Christian alike. I became like a plague to them because I no longer did the things I use to do. I wanted, as well as needed, to spend as much time with the Lord as possible. My desire to spend more time with Him brought about undesirable situations with people of whom I used to have a closeness to. Not only did I have personal attacks, but in terms of business, it has been a long and tough journey with my endeavors to get prototypes of my invention, as well as making decisions to manufacture, license, or self-distribute. The decision that I make would determine my success or failure. I had a lot of decisions to make before I could even get my invention on the market. I so often found myself praying and asking God for His direction and guidance. After about six months into the invention process, I heard the Holy Spirit speak to me and say, "Here is your book. Continue to write and place glory on my name." I couldn't believe what I heard, but after hearing the Lord speak, I looked at my journal and realized, Wow, this is a book. I was a little hesitant because I had no inclination of writing a book. The thought never crossed my mind. Besides, I was so caught up in venturing out and searching for information on how to make the right decisions concerning my invention that I didn't have time for anything else. As I stated before, I had no thoughts of writing a book, but I was obedient to God. This book is an actual testimony of almost everything that I've gone through to get this far with my invention. I say almost, because I'm not finished with publicizing my invention, and it is not yet fully on the market. I've done two illustrations with self-made prototypes, and they were a big hit. Everyone liked them, but I still have a long way to go. I thank God for His vision and for allowing me to partner with Him in sharing the experience of this venture.

Description : The philosophy of Albert Schweitzer has proved widely influential in modern thinking, especially in the field of ethics. His leading ethical idea can be summarized in the phrase "reverence for life" - namely, that good consists in maintaining and perfecting life, and evil consists in destroying and obstructing life. For Schweitzer, all life is sacred. Ethics thus deals with human attitudes and behavior toward all living beings. Unlike many moral philosophers, Schweitzer argues that knowledge of human nature does not provide a sufficient foundation for any adequate moral theory. That is why he bases his ethics on much broader foundations, articulated in his philosophy of civilization and the philosophy of religion. Schweitzer argues that the material aspect of our civilization has become far more important than its spiritual counterpart. Even organized religion has put itself in the service of politics and economy, thereby losing its vitality and moral authority. Schweitzer's ethics of reverence for life, argues Predrag Cicovacki, offers a viable alternative at a time when traditional ethical theories are found inadequate. Schweitzer's robust and un-dogmatic idealism may offer the best antidote to the prevailing relativism and nihilism of the postmodern epoch. His ethical vision directs us toward a new way of building a more just and more peaceful world. Collecting sixteen of Schweitzer's most effective essays, this volume serves as a compelling introduction to this remarkable thinker and humanist.

Description : In these previously uncollected essays, Smith argues that American philosophers like Peirce, James, Royce, and Dewey have forged a unique philosophical tradition—one that is rich and complex enough to represent a genuine alternative to the analytic, phenomenological, and hermeneutical traditions which have originated in Britain or Europe. "In my judgment, John Smith has no equal today in combining two scholarly qualities: the analysis of philosophical texts with penetration and rigor, and the discernment of what it is in these texts that matters. These qualities are in evidence throughout the essays in America's Philosophical Vision. Whether he is evaluating Rorty's view of Dewey; the pragmatic theory of experience and truth; theories of freedom, creativity, and the self; Royce's conception of community; or synoptic philosophic visions, Smith always succeeds in uniting a comprehensive understanding of philosophic writings with a sure grasp of their import for human culture and aspiration. It is a great benefit to students of American thought that these papers have now been collected into one volume."—James Gouinlock, Emory University

Description : Combining both the theory as well as the practice of the education reform process, this unique breakthrough volume focuses on every aspect of the change process in high school education today. Short- and long-term strategies for each phase of the process-provoking, creating, managing, supporting, and sustaining reform-are covered. Based on the real-life experiences of the author and others, this book recognizes that most high school reform is short-lived. It stresses the ways to create and maintain positive change, making the process a long-lasting, worthwhile mission for the school's leadership and ultimately the students. Short, useful summaries of high school reform provide true-life pictures of what really happens in the midst of changing the way educational institutions operate. These stories cover school-based management, collaborative or shared leadership, school-within-a-school groupings, interdisciplinary instruction, school-based budgeting, new models for professional development, and others. Through these examples, readers can understand how reform strategies work and how to apply and adapt them to their own situations. As an added feature, this book provides the names and locations of schools attempting each reform as well as the names and addresses of school reform networks that readers can contact in their own efforts.
