Description : But we loved that old ROOSEVELT & when he signed that Order 8802 a whole bunch of us got in the service. But you see I didn't trust them too much, & there was a lot of money to be made with all the work that the war caused. I just met this old girl that came up here from New Orleans, because, well, I thought that she was dirt poor & came up to make some money & find a husband. She was the prettiest thing that we ever seen around here, & we started courting almost as soon as she got off the bus ( he chuckled to himself). "Her name was Antoinette. She had the softest light real near white skin that I had ever seen even on white folks, long Black shining hair, and a very pretty smile, you see. She loved to laugh, a&nd I did as much as I could to make her laugh. If she wanted a clown, I sure damned was going to be one. She always spoke in a near whisper in that half French way that they speak down there in the French Quarter down there, & sometimes we didn't know what the hell she was talking about. But she was so damned pretty that I really didn't care since she was my girl. Hell, after a couple of weeks of being together, she started talking that talk to me & whatever she was saying sounded so good to me that I was agreeing all over myself! "She got so excited that we didn't go to see the show like we was suppose to & spent the night together. We made good music that night, if you know what I mean? That was the summer of forty-three, and I was so happy that I didn't know what to do with myself. The next morning she told me that she had to send her Mama a telegram to let her know that we was coming down so she could meet me & show me off to her family. "That's when I realized that the woman was talking about marriage! Well, I tell you that I was scared to death, because I never thought about marrying her or anybody else at the time, you see! But she was such a pretty thing that I said to myself "BOY, AS UGLY AS YOU ARE, YOU AIN'T GOING TO DO MUCH BETTER."

Description : God desires to speak to us for fellowship, with the ultimate goal of relationship. Usually God uses a quiet touch to communicate. This quiet touch is what Donna Fitzpatrick refers to as the whispers of God. These whispers give wisdom, direction, and reveal the things God wants to change in our hearts. Yet, if we're waiting for a loudspeaker from heaven we'll miss His quiet touch. Through a combination of Scripture and true-life whisper stories, Learning to Hear the Whispers of God encourages that God will speak to every believer. As a mother of eight, Donna writes from a wealth of stories. Believers from all walks and stages in life find themselves captivated and warmed by her down-to-earth manner and easy writing style that tugs at the heart and challenges our faith. Sometimes humorous, sometimes serious, these stories demonstrate the various ways God may choose to speak. Be encouraged to recognize God's voice through these stories, and then experience the thrill of hearing the Lord whisper as He captures teaching moments through everyday experiences. Thought-provoking questions and scriptural answers contained in this book make it perfect for personal use or as a group Bible study.

Description : I heard him staggering down the hallway, banging into the banister sloshing his drink of choice, most likely a gin and tonic, along the way. As he reached for her door, I felt my airways constrict and the walls of the room close in around me. My body stiffened, and my senses numbed, as I listened for the faint squeak of my bedroom door to open softly. I am, 17 year-old aristocratic-born Candace Spencer, and I quickly recognized the monster that prowled the darkness of my sanctuary. My breath faded as the muscular figures slithered into my room and onto my body. My nightmare only lasted a few minutes several times a week but I lost a part of my soul a little bit more during each horrific moment. I closed my eyes and lived one more death as he devoured me, but tonight I vowed it would end. The prominent and respected businessman revered by the community would not return to my bedroom again. Never again! I had no idea how long it had been away; a Spiritual Guide's time was measured very differently compared to human lifetime. Was it a day later or had one or twenty years passed? Right now I had my first assignment in my new form, Mari Santiago, a 16 year-old teenager struggling to survive her family's domestic violence and sexual assaults in the tough streets of New York. The Whispers Within reveals the parallel of two dissimilar lives between two teenagers: one alive and the other dead. Mari comes to know Candace in a manner she would have never dreamt. Candace, having lived life at the opposite economic strata from the inner city life Mari was accustomed to, is only equipped with whispers of encouragement to defeat Mari's demons. How will Candace handle returning to earth as a spirit when she did not deal with her own nemesis while alive? Will Mari be consumed by the demons that surround her or will Candace pave a way for Mari to flee them? Will they both come to know each other's demons? Will Candace's whispers be enough for Mari to conquer her demons while building a new life?

Description : Mixing and clashing an outrageously eclectic set of influences—the close harmonies of the Beatles, the guitar pyrotechnics of Jimi Hendrix, the heavy sound of Led Zeppelin, and the glamour of David Bowie—Queen found a winning formula by channeling this strange cocktail through its charismatic frontman, Freddie Mercury. More than a decade after Mercury's death, Queen's fan base continues to grow. This meticulous, session-by-session, album-by-album, tour-by-tour chronicle of the band is the book that Queen fans have been waiting for.

Description : This book examines the operating of cultural work in postcolonial Nairobi from the view that it drives modernity, survival and processes of empowerment. It depicts a city of global and spatial aspirations, divided by a past that transcends its present. It is a neo-colonial and acquisitive city; Western cultural institutions dominate the marketplace. An associative aspect is the gendered city space (streets, bars, pubs), which is overwhelmingly masculine. The book demonstrates that women's marginalisation impacts variously on the city's texts, its fiction, theatre, and the iconography of the Matatu vehicle. The major theme of the book is the struggle for cultural recognition and authority. Strategies of social and political accommodation coalesce both creatively and antagonistically in this formulation of Kenyan self-identification.
