Description : * Gives an account of the history, the theological basis, the practice and the current state of the study of religion and religions throughout the world * Combines a clear and non-technical style of presentation with a structure and range of contributions which reflect the richness and complexity of religion itself, of the religions of the world and the study of religions * Comprehensive index, bibliographies and suggestions for further reading `Intriguing philosophical questions are raised about the nature of religion and the qualities needed for studying it.' - Times Higher Education Supplement `Excellent book ... remarkably successful, impressive as much for the sheer scale of the undertaking as for its consistent standard of analysis. It is a fine achievement which will serve both as a very suitable textbook for students and a reliable guide to the state of scholarship in the History and Study of Religions.' - Heythrop Journal

Description : Convening on the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, the global congress The World's Religions after September 11 explored the negative and positive possibilities of the religious dimensions of life. The presentations from the congress have been pulled together in this set, which addresses religion's intersection with human rights, spirituality, science, healing, the media, international diplomacy, globalization, war and peace, and more. This comprehensive set includes contributions from such well-known scholars of religion as Arvind Sharma and a host of others from all the world's religious traditions. This set is an unprecedented examination of religion's influence on modern life, an honest assessment of how religion can either destroy us or preserve us, and a thorough exploration of what steps might be necessary for all religions to join together as a force for good. Because of the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, the very concept of religion underwent a paradigm shift. Instead of standing for virtue and piety, peace and harmony, the word religion also came to be inextricably associated with evil, aggression, and terror. People around the world began to question whether the religious and secular dimensions of modern life can be reconciled, whether the different religions of the world can ever coexist in harmony. Indeed, the very future of religion itself has sometimes seemed to be uncertain, or at least suspect. The volumes are: 1. Religion, War, and Peace 2. Religion and Human Rights 3. The Interfaith Dimension 4. Spirituality.

Description : A growing chorus of voices has suggested that the world’s religions may become critical actors as the climate crisis unfolds, particularly in light of international paralysis on the issue. In recent years, many faiths have begun to address climate change and its consequences for human societies, especially the world’s poor. This is the first volume to use social science to examine how religions are helping to address one of the most significant and far-reaching challenges of our time. While there is a growing literature in theology and ethics about climate change and religion, little research has been previously published about the ways in which religious institutions, groups and individuals are responding to the problem of climate change. Seventeen research-driven chapters are written by sociologists, anthropologists, geographers and other social scientists. This book explores what effects religions are having, what barriers they are running into or creating, and what this means for the global struggle to address climate change.

Description : "We have", says Father Whitson, "moved across the threshold into a new situation in religion. No longer is the quest for unity primarily the concern of historians, social theorists and those who generally felt themselves to be outside the commitment to one of the traditions. The quest for unity at long last involves those with a specific religious identity and hence enters the very substance of religious experience, both individual and communally shared. Even though a concern still limited to a very few, the explosion in communications and the revolution in education are even now multiplying the effect of these few astronomically". The question before us, he continues, then, is not whether the world's religious traditions have a positive significance for one another, but rather, how we can formulate an understanding of that significance. The formulation we seek must arise from within actual religious experience and be capable of speaking to one who listens from within a tradition of sharing specific historic forms of experience. It must not presume that the process towards unity will destroy the various traditions, reducing them to some common, indeterminate kind of religious experience. On the contrary, to be authentic it must recognize and prize the very different heritages, for we can now see that each at its core is unique. Sometimes the differing traditions, originating in isolation from each other and so coming to their present maturity separately, are to become dimensions of one another, complementing each other by their varied uniqueness, and making possible an undreamed of breadth and depth of vision for man in an infinite universe.

Description : Dr. Shinn explores these two sacred worlds: the personal, which results from the emotional attitudes aroused by an experience of sacred power; and the social, which originates in the processes of socialization composed of experiences in the home, religious institutions, and other influential groups. Using examples from three traditions- Hebrew religion, early Christianity, and monastic Buddhism- he examines the interdependence of personal and institutional forms of myth and ritual and the relation of personal and social religion to ethical interpretations and to dogma and theology.

Description : Two abundantly illustrated volumes offer a vibrant discussion of how the divine is and has been represented in art and architecture the world over. Beginning with the ancient worlds of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, and Rome and moving forward through time, Art and Architecture of the World's Religions explores the major faiths from countries and continents around the globe, helping readers better understand the creations their beliefs have inspired. After tracing the history and development of a religion, the book provides a general overview of its principal beliefs and key practices. It then offers specific examples of how works of art/architecture reflect that religion's values. The focus of each chapter is on the temples, churches, and religious buildings, statues, paintings, and other works of art and architecture created by believers. Each representative work of art or architecture is examined in terms of its history, materials, symbols, colors, and patterns, as its significance is explained to the reader. With extensive illustrations, these volumes are the definitive reference work on art and architecture of the world's religions. 200 illustrations, including floor plans of churches, synagogues, and temples bring the discussions of art and architecture to life An extensive bibliography enables further research

Description : Sacred Worldsexplores the ways in which religion, its symbols, rites, beliefs and hopes, has shaped the world in which we live. Chris Park explores the definitions of religion, its historical and ideological origins and its development. Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam and their numerous offshoots are all described. The wide range of material drawn from these different belief systems is set within the context of religious, demographic, political and economic change. The nature of sacred space as place of pilgrimage and as cultural landscape is also analysed. This book enriches our understanding of the ways in which religion has mapped our world.
