Description : This book describes the emergence of DIY punk record labels in the early 1980s. Based on interviews with sixty-one labels, including four in Spain and four in Canada, it describes the social background of those who run these labels. Especially interesting are those operated by dropouts from the middle class. Other respected older labels are often run by people with upper middle-class backgrounds. A third group of labels are operated by working-class and lower middle-class punks who take a serious attitude to the work. Using the ideas of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, this book shows how the field of record labels operates. The choice of independent or corporate distribution is a major dilemma. Other tensions are about signing contracts with bands, expecting extensive touring, and using professional promotion. There are often rivalries between big and small labels over bands that have become popular and have to decide whether to move to a more commercial record label. Unlike approaches to punk that consider it as subcultural style, this book breaks new ground by describing punk as a social activity. One of the surprising findings is how many parents actually support their children's participation in the scene. Rather than attempting to define punk as resistance or as commercial culture, this book shows the dilemmas that actual punks struggle with as they attempt to live up to what the scene means for them.

Description : The Stranglers have outlasted and outsold virtually every other band of their era, recording ten hit albums and releasing 21 Top 40 singles. Their list of hits, including Golden Brown, were written against a background of spectacular success, dismal failure, drug dependency, financial ruin, infighting and misfortune. As a response to David Buckley's one-sided biography of the band ("No Mercy" Hodder & Stoughton, 1997) and the band’s reticence to reveal the true meaning behind their songs, Hugh Cornwell, founding member and songwriter, sets the record straight, displaces the myths and for the first time explains the real stories behind The Stranglers, his departure and the origins of their songs.

Description : The long-awaited second edition of Baker and Hart's "Product Strategy and Management" expertly analyses the nature of product strategy and the management of the entire product life cycle, from new product development to product elimination. The nature and practice of the life cycle are central to the firm's overall strategy for competitiveness. The authors repeatedly emphasize the fact that without product strategy and management there would be no markets, no customers, no competition - and therefore no marketing. Exploring the fundamental relationship between the success of a product and the survival of the firm, the book employs an innovative four-part structure: Part 1 - The theoretical foundations Part 2 - New product development Part 3 - Product management Part 4 - Product elimination Whether studying at undergraduate, postgraduate or MBA levels, students will find this book essential to their understanding of this increasingly important subject area. Michael Baker is Emeritus Professor of Marketing at the University of Strathclyde where he founded the Department of Marketing in 1971. Past Chairman of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and founder of its Academic Senate, he was Chair of the Marketing Education Group for 16 years and President of its successor, the Academy of Marketing, for 18 years. Susan Hart is Professor of Marketing at Strathclyde University. She has held professorial appointments at Heriot-Watt and Stirling University and visiting positions in the USA, Australia and Europe. She has published numerous articles on the subject of product deletion, new product development and new product launch.

Description : Electric and Music Industries Ltd (EMI) first saw the light of day in the UK in 1931. In a visionary move for the gramophone age, it manufactured both hardware (recording and playback equipment) and software (the records and tapes its machines would play). For over half a century, EMI dominated both sectors, its music division eventually becoming the most successful in the world with a roster that at various times included The Beatles, Maria Callas, Frank Sinatra, Cliff Richard, Pink Floyd, The Beach Boys, Queen, Robbie Williams, The Spice Girls, Kate Bush and Kylie Minogue. Then in the 1990s, things started to go wrong...Guy Hands bought EMI in 2007. Four years on - and on EMI's 80th birthday - the company has been bought by a French media giant and a consortium led by the music arm of a Japanese electronics corporation taking over ownership of EMI's legendary record business and its highly profitable publishing arm from an American bank. Do these two deals mark the final chapter in the story of the company that proudly bore the name Electric & Musical Industries? This is the continuing saga of Britain's greatest music company as it faces an uncertain future under new ownership. Since 2009 EMI has broken new acts and sold millions of records BUT the massive debts incurred by its owners Terra Firma have finally taken it to the brink of a break-up. Music industry experts and executives, financiers and commentators plus artists' managers assess EMI's fortunes as the company celebrates its 80th birthday. Includes interviews with many key players including former EMI Group/EMI Music executives Sir Colin Southgate, Jim Fifield, Eric Nicoli, Tony Wadsworth, David Munns, Rupert Perry, Ray Cooper and Jon Webster. He has also interviewed many managers, music journalists, financial analysists and rival record company executives.
