Description : Danger waits on both sides of the grave. Half-vampire Cat Crawfield and her vampire husband Bones have fought for their lives, as well as for their relationship. But just when they've triumphed over the latest battle, Cat's new and unexpected abilities threaten to upset a long-standing balance . . . With the mysterious disappearance of vampires, rumors abound that a species war is brewing. A zealot is inciting tensions between the vampires and ghouls, and if these two powerful groups clash, innocent mortals could become collateral damage. Now Cat and Bones are forced to seek help from a dangerous "ally"—the ghoul queen of New Orleans herself. But the price of her assistance may prove more treacherous than even the threat of a supernatural war . . . to say nothing of the repercussions Cat never imagined.

Description : Northside of the Grave is a collection of poetry, reflecting the heartaches and pleasures given us by this unpredictable life. It was written from 2009 to the present while falling in and out of love with Patricia Kosta. My need for loneliness was eventually overcome by her need for intimacy, and we have been together on a permanent basis since January 2013. As I'm fond of saying, she chased me until I caught her. This book is dedicated to her. Excerpt from "By Your Presence" If you have ever considered whether trickling streams rejoice to meander their way to a turbulent ocean, you must then consider the paths that have led me to you through the inconvenience of circumstance and the rending of hearts. And as surely as the sun licks the morning clouds, ascends the eastern horizon, the scent of dawn has left your fragrance upon the air I breathe, in the moments of intimacy, when I am refreshed by your presence.

Description : A clergyman’s daughter falls in love with a member of high society while her father stands accused of a terrible crime in this classic Victorian novel. The final installment of the Chronicles of Barsetshire provides a fitting close to the delightful tales author Anthony Trollope developed over the course of six unforgettable and influential novels. When Rev. Josiah Crawley, the perpetual curate of Hogglestock, is accused of stealing a check, the allegation hinders the romantic aspirations of his daughter, Grace, who hopes to marry the archdeacon’s widowed son, Maj. Henry Grantly. Grace must overcome the objections raised by Grantly’s family and win their favor while her father stands accused. The final masterwork in a groundbreaking saga that did much to elevate the status of the English novel, The Last Chronicle of Barset is one of the most beloved novels in the Barsetshire treasury, as well as Trollope’s personal favorite. The author ties together many of the loose threads from the series, turning an attentive eye to some of the Chronicles’ most beloved—and most loathed—characters. Readers will delight in visiting Barsetshire’s cathedral and hamlets one last time. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

Description : The forms by which a deceased person may be brought to rest are as many as there are causes of death. In most societies the disposal of the corpse is accompanied by some form of celebration or ritual which may range from a simple act of deportment in solitude to the engagement of large masses of people in laborious and creative festivities. In a funerary context the term ritual may be taken to represent a process that incorporates all the actions performed and thoughts expressed in connection with a dying and dead person, from the preparatory pre-death stages to the final deposition of the corpse and the post-mortem stages of grief and commemoration. The contributions presented here are focused not on the examination of different funerary practices, their function and meaning, but on the changes of such rituals _ how and when they occurred and how they may be explained. Based on case studies from a range of geographical regions and from different prehistoric and historical periods, a range of key themes are examined concerning belief and ritual, body and deposition, place, performance and commemoration, exploring a complex web of practices.

Description : Through close readings of Karl Barth's theological work from 1916 to 1929 this book offers an exposition of Barth's doctrine of sanctification in his earlier theology - arguing that from his earliest writings after 1915 the doctrine of sanctification was one of the key theological components used in describing the encounter between God and humanity in a positive and concrete manner. This book both fills an important gap in Barthian scholarship and responds to the appeal by other recent interpreters of Barth's theology for a more balanced and careful exposition of his work. Throughout the course of this exposition the force of Eduard Thurnyesen's wonderfully insightful comments about Barth show themselves to be fruitfully borne out within his work from early on. That is, 'Karl Barth's theological thinking was from the beginning directed to the life of man ... the life of man, on the one side, and on the other the Word of God that meets this life, lays hold of it, and transforms it.'

Description : Five torn-from-the-headlines true crime books from an Edgar Award–nominated author and “one of our best reporters” (John Leonard). Linda Wolfe delves deep into the crimes that defy explanation—and the twisted minds of those who commit them. In these five books, she combines masterful storytelling with brilliant psychological insight. Wasted: On an August night in 1986, Jennifer Levin left a Manhattan bar with Robert Chambers. The next morning, her strangled, battered body was found in Central Park. This New York Times Notable Book provides a “fascinating, horrifying, and heart-breaking” account of the so-called Preppie Murder, the crime that shocked a city and a nation (Ann Rule). The Professor and the Prostitute: The chilling case of a college professor who bludgeoned to death the prostitute he loved—plus eight other true crimes, including the bizarre story of the Marcus brothers, twin gynecologists, that inspired the David Cronenberg film Dead Ringers. Double Life: The riveting story of how the chief judge of the New York State Court of Appeals was brought down by his sexual obsession with a stunning socialite. The Murder of Dr. Chapman: Wolfe skillfully weaves court transcripts, love letters, and period recollections into an edge-of-your-seat historical thriller about a notorious crime of passion that rocked pre–Civil War America. Love Me to Death: Wolfe embarks on a search for the serial killer who murdered her friend in this “intriguing insider’s look into the convoluted mind of a killer” (The Plain Dealer).

Description : "Victorian Literature" is a comprehensive and fully annotated anthology with a flexible design that allows teachers and students to pursue traditional or innovative lines of inquiry. Included in this collection are 105 of the period's prose, poetry, drama, and nonfiction writers, including such canonical authors as Tennyson, Arnold, the Brownings, Carlyle, Ruskin, the Rossettis, Wilde, Eliot, and the Brontes. Fifty authors are women. In addition to selections from the major authors of the period, the volume promotes an ideologically and culturally varied view of Victorian society by including women, working-class, colonial, gay and lesbian writers, and dialect poets. These selections offer readers the opportunity to study new voices beyond the canon. There are 5 contextual sections covering the Condition of England; Gender, Women, and Sexuality; Literature and the Arts; Religion and Science; and Empire. These contexts are interdisciplinary in nature and examine the social, cultural, artistic, and historical factors at play during the period. They also contain unexpected sub-sections on topics of recent scholarship, such as environmentalism and animal rights; mass literacy and mass media; sex and sexuality; Victorian childhood; melodrama and comedy; the Irish question; ruling India and the Indian Mutiny; innovations in print culture; and the science of race. The coverage is further expanded with an extensive website for teachers and students that presents additional contextual readings (each with new sub-sections, such as Orientalism, ecclesiastical parties, literature and new technologies, law and the sexual subject), visual materials, audio recordings, maps, chronologies, and thematic indexes. These are fully integrated with the text and include detailed annotations about names, places, events, allusions, and leading ideas. From the canon to its extensions to its contexts, this website is a fresh and exciting introduction to the diversity of the Victorian age.

Description : Bringing to bear a variety of perspectives on the poetry, prose, and letters of a writer whose work is just now beginning to emerge from critical neglect, this collection edited by David A. Kent should play an important role in the re-evaluation of Christina Rossetti. It consists of fifteen essays by gifted Victorian scholars who represent a wide range of methodologies and critical concerns, and it offers alternatives to the autobiographical approach that has limited appreciation of Rossetti the writer.

Description : This book offers a fresh perspective on the importance of progeny and perpetuation of the family line in the Hebrew tradition. Steffan Matthias argues that the Hebrew bible depicts failing to protect the transmission of the family line as both a failure in the social order, a threat to the afterlife, and a failure in masculinity, leading to the eradication of the name and memory of the man and the destruction of the household. Using the work of Pierre Bourdieu, as well as anthropological and gender-critical insights, Matthias reassess pertinent texts which respond to the threat of men dying without children, such as levirate marriage (Deut 22:5-10) or the erection of monuments (Isa 56:5-8). Themes such as death, burial and memorial, identity, covenant, name, genealogy, property, seed and sexuality, rather than being treated as separate parts of social or family life, are critically assessed in light of each other. Matthias instead illustrates how they form part of the same discourse of social reproduction, in which the integrity of the family is protected and passed down from father to son in generations of descendants. Paternity, Progeny, and Perpetuation raises profound questions regarding the subtle ways texts that respond to this threat of social annihilation – the destruction of the father and his line - reinforce social boundaries and construct men as transmitters of identity and women as submissive counterparts.

Description : English Hymns of the Nineteenth Century brings together for the first time the most popular and widely used English hymns from that period, continuing the work of its foregoing volume, English Hymns of the Eighteenth Century, the genre's formative period. This annotated and edited collection of nearly 200 hymns (with author introductions and a general historical introduction) will be of inestimable value to scholars, students, and laypersons from several disciplines and interests: from hymnology to church and social history and theology, from political science to literature to popular culture. Hymns were the most widely read and memorized verbal structures from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries - and in the nineteenth century the hymn became not only the property of dissenters, but also of representatives from the Church of England and the Roman Catholic Church. This anthology, therefore, provides unique and highly significant insights into the culture, beliefs, and habits of thought of a people and their spiritual leaders.
