Description : Winner of the 1999 Spiro Kostof Book Award from the Society of Architectural Historians. During the early 1900s, Amsterdam developed an international reputation as an urban mecca when invigorating reforms gave rise to new residential neighborhoods encircling the city's dispirited nineteenth-century districts. This new housing, built primarily with government subsidy, not only was affordable but also met rigorous standards of urban planning and architectural design. Nancy Stieber explores the social and political developments that fostered this innovation in public housing. Drawing on government records, professional journals, and polemical writings, Stieber examines how government supported large-scale housing projects, how architects like Berlage redefined their role as architects in service to society, and how the housing occupants were affected by public debates about working-class life, the cultural value of housing, and the role of art in society. Stieber emphasizes the tensions involved in making architectural design a social practice while she demonstrates the success of this collective enterprise in bringing about effective social policy and aesthetic progress.

Description : From a punishment for the immoral acts of others, venereal disease has become a malady that may confront any one of us. This book examines the different stages in this long development and reveals the strange disjunction between waves of public anxiety and the factual incidence of disease, in this troubled overlap between medical science and social life. It describes the various efforts that have been made since 1850 to contain the hazard of sexually transmitted diseases and places the changing views on venereal infection in their historical and social context. The comparisons drawn between the late 19th-century battle against syphilis and present-day responses to the AIDS epidemic underscore the notable changes that have taken place not only in thinking about sexuality, but also in the authority of the medical profession and in the position of patients vis-à-vis policy-makers and all those involved in determining modes of treatment and prevention.

Description : Devised by a famous Welsh poet, the Bardic alphabet called Coelbren has always seemed to hold great promise. But as long as nobody knew how to use the system for divination, it remained simply a relic of a bygone era. In this book John Michael Greer reveals the secrets of this esoteric alphabet, restoring the Coelbren to its rightful place as a powerful magical tool. Unlike the Ogham or runes, the Coelbren letters take their meaning directly from the sounds they represent. Providing the name, Welsh keyword, meaning, symbolism, pronunciation, and divinatory interpretation of each letter, this book shows how to use this unique system for divination and magic. You will also discover sample readings, scrying and meditation techniques, and tips for making your own Coelbren set. Writng systems have been used for magical power and mystical insight in spiritual traditions throughout history. This book shows how to engage in an effective divinatory practice with an alphabet that is mysterious in its origins but undeniable in its power.

Description : Over the last century, identity as an avenue of inquiry has become both an academic growth industry and a problematic category of historical analysis. This volume shows how the study of medicine can provide new insights into colonial identity, and the possibility of accommodating multiple perspectives on identity within a single narrative. Contributors to this volume explore the perceived self-identity of colonizers; the adoption of western and traditional medicine as complementary aspects of a new, modern and nationalist identity; the creation of a modern identity for women in the colonies; and the expression of a healer's identity by physicians of traditional medicine.

Description : Willem Marinus Dudok (1884-1974) is regarded internationally as one of the most important Dutch architects. As director of Public Works and City Architect to Hilversum, Dudok realized in that municipality not only his world-famous City Hall but also a welter of smaller projects including public baths, a library, housing, schools, a sports park and a cemetery. It was in this period that Dudok developed his own idiom, marked by compositions of cubic volumes. Besides his Hilversum buildings, others he built in Rotterdam, Paris and Velsen have been the subject of great interest. They are regarded as exemplifying an architecture that appeals not only to the professional world but also to the public at large. This compact though lavishly illustrated volume gives a complete overview of the major works by this architect who succeeded in striking a unique balance between modernism and tradition.

Description : Neurasthenia, or "nerve weakness," was originally identified in the U.S. in the late-19th century as an urban disease, similar to today's chronic fatigue syndrome. Neurasthenia maintained popularity through the first decade of the 20th century. This text contains 16 papers from a conference held in June 2000 in Amsterdam, to analyze and compare the history of neurasthenia in Britain, Germany, and the Netherlands. Developments in America and France are also given attention, as well as nervous disorders in Britain prior to the coming of neurasthenia. The authors consider the rise and fall of neurasthenia, variations in its popularity among countries, and the professional, patient, and public views of the disorder.
